Start With the New Light Quest

New Destiny 2 players begin as a New Light.

The introductory quest teaches basic movement, combat, abilities, weapons, objectives, and navigation before introducing you to Shaw Han and eventually sending you toward the Tower.

Although portions of the onboarding experience can be skipped, completely new players should generally finish it.

Destiny 2 assumes that you understand a surprising number of mechanics later in the game, and learning the basics naturally is much easier than trying to understand everything while already inside a difficult activity. Bungie's current onboarding also directs new players toward the Tower and the game's wider progression systems.

Returning Players Can Use New Light Too

If you last played several expansions ago and your menus look almost unrecognizable, returning to the introductory experience can also help.

Bungie specifically recommends that returning Guardians who feel lost visit the Tower or go to the Cosmodrome and speak with Shaw Han to begin New Light.

You do not need to delete your old character.

Your existing Guardian, weapons, armor, Collections, Triumphs, and other progression can still be useful.

Choosing Your First Class

Destiny 2 has three classes:

  • Hunter

  • Warlock

  • Titan

All three can complete essentially every major activity in the game. Your class does not permanently lock you into a traditional MMO role such as tank, healer, or DPS.

The difference is primarily how each class moves, uses abilities, and builds around its subclasses.

Hunter

Hunters emphasize agility, precision, mobility, and evasive gameplay.

Depending on your subclass and build, Hunters can specialize in powerful weapon damage, invisibility, crowd control, melee combinations, or high burst damage.

Choose Hunter if you enjoy movement-heavy gameplay and frequently repositioning during combat.

Warlock

Warlocks combine offensive abilities with strong healing, buffs, and ability regeneration.

They can become excellent support characters, grenade-focused damage dealers, crowd-control specialists, or aggressive ability users.

Choose Warlock if ability-based combat and team utility appeal to you.

Titan

Titans naturally fit aggressive and defensive playstyles.

They have access to powerful melee tools, survivability mechanics, defensive abilities, and builds that can fight extremely close to enemies.

Choose Titan if you enjoy being directly involved in combat rather than constantly fighting from long range.

These descriptions are only starting points. Bungie stresses that Destiny's build system lets each class move beyond its basic stereotype. You can build durable Hunters, highly aggressive Warlocks, or ability-focused Titans depending on your gear and subclass setup.

Can You Change Class Later?

Yes.

Your account has multiple character slots, allowing you to create characters from all three classes.

However, you cannot convert a Hunter into a Warlock or Titan. You create a separate character for another class.

For your first character, choose whichever class looks most enjoyable instead of worrying about which one is considered "best."

Learn How Destiny 2 Subclasses Work

Your class determines your Guardian's basic identity, while your subclass determines many of the abilities and elemental mechanics you use.

The current major subclass elements are:

  • Solar

  • Arc

  • Void

  • Stasis

  • Strand

  • Prismatic

Each class uses these elements differently.

Solar

Solar focuses heavily on burning enemies, healing, and offensive buffs.

Important Solar effects include:

  • Radiant

  • Cure

  • Restoration

  • Scorch

  • Ignition

Solar is an excellent beginner element because many Solar builds combine damage with reliable survivability.

Arc

Arc emphasizes aggressive combat, mobility, chaining damage, and electrical effects.

Important Arc mechanics include:

  • Amplified

  • Jolt

  • Blind

  • Ionic Traces

Arc can be particularly enjoyable if you prefer fast gameplay and attacking groups of enemies.

Void

Void offers excellent survivability and utility.

Important Void effects include:

  • Devour

  • Invisibility

  • Overshield

  • Weaken

  • Suppression

  • Volatile

Void is extremely flexible because it can provide healing, protection, crowd control, and offensive debuffs.

Stasis

Stasis is a Darkness subclass centered around slowing, freezing, and shattering opponents.

Its key mechanics include:

  • Slow

  • Freeze

  • Shatter

  • Frost Armor

  • Stasis Crystals

  • Stasis Shards

Beyond Light's campaign is available to all players, and completing it unlocks Stasis.

Strand

Strand focuses on mobility, crowd control, and manipulating enemies through Darkness-based abilities.

Its major effects include:

  • Woven Mail

  • Suspend

  • Sever

  • Unravel

  • Tangles

  • Threadlings

Strand requires progression through the Lightfall campaign, which requires Lightfall ownership.

Prismatic

Prismatic allows Guardians to combine selected Light and Darkness abilities in a single subclass.

Its signature mechanic is Transcendence, which is charged through Light and Darkness damage and temporarily gives your Guardian additional offensive tools.

Prismatic is unlocked through progression in The Final Shape and therefore requires ownership of that expansion.

For a completely new player, there is no reason to immediately chase complicated Prismatic builds. Learn how one or two normal subclasses work first.

Understand Aspects and Fragments

A subclass is much more than your Super.

Its real power comes from how you combine abilities with Aspects and Fragments.

Aspects provide major subclass effects and influence how your core abilities behave.

Fragments provide smaller bonuses or interactions that allow you to refine the build around a specific strategy.

For example, one build may focus on generating large numbers of elemental effects, while another version of the same subclass concentrates almost entirely on survivability.

For Arc, Solar, and Void, additional Aspects and Fragments can be obtained through Ikora Rey at the Tower using Glimmer.

Stasis progression is associated with the Exo Stranger on Europa, Strand progression with the Pouka Pond on Neomuna, and Prismatic unlocks through activities and objectives connected to The Final Shape.

Do not worry about finding a perfect setup immediately.

Experiment first. Optimization matters much more once you start attempting difficult endgame content.

Visit the Tower and Learn the Important Vendors

The Tower is Destiny 2's primary social hub and one of the places you will visit most often.

Several important characters and systems are found here.

Ikora Rey

Ikora is particularly valuable for beginners.

She provides access to subclass-related progression and beginner-oriented builds. Bungie's current new-player guide specifically recommends visiting her because these starter builds include useful gear and can provide an excellent foundation while you learn the game.

Zavala

Zavala is associated with Vanguard activities and PvE progression.

If you enjoy fighting combatants rather than other players, you will spend plenty of time interacting with Vanguard-related content.

Lord Shaxx

Shaxx is your main Crucible vendor.

The Crucible is Destiny 2's primary PvP environment.

The Drifter

The Drifter handles Gambit progression.

Gambit combines PvE enemy clearing with direct competition and invasions between opposing teams.

Banshee-44

Banshee is Destiny's Gunsmith and remains relevant when dealing with weapons and weapon-related rewards.

Saint-14

Saint-14 is tied to Trials of Osiris, Destiny 2's higher-stakes PvP endgame activity.

Do not feel pressured to immediately learn every vendor.

Start with Ikora and the characters associated with the activities you actually enjoy.

Learn the Director and Portal

One of the biggest sources of confusion for returning players is navigation.

Destiny 2 now splits much of its playable content between the Director, destination-based content, and the Portal.

The current Director once again acts as the game's central navigation screen, while Portal activities remain accessible through its activity nodes.

Solo Ops

Solo Ops are short activities designed to be completed alone.

They are useful when you want to practice a build, become comfortable with combat, or earn rewards without depending on teammates.

Fireteam Ops

Fireteam Ops are generally designed around teams of up to three Guardians.

They include content such as strikes and other cooperative PvE activities. Some support matchmaking.

Arena Ops

Arena Ops are larger activities designed for fireteams of up to six players.

They generally focus on fighting large numbers of enemies while completing objectives.

Pinnacle Ops

Pinnacle Ops are more demanding.

They include mechanically complex and longer activities aimed at experienced players and organized fireteams.

Exotic missions can also appear within this part of Destiny's activity structure.

Crucible Ops

Crucible Ops contain Destiny 2's PvP experiences.

If competitive multiplayer is your main reason for playing Destiny, this is where much of your attention will go.

Gambit Ops

Gambit mixes PvE and PvP.

Two teams fight enemies independently, bank Motes, summon a boss, and attempt to defeat it before the opposing team. Players can also invade the opposing team's arena and directly disrupt their progress.

The Portal lets players modify activity difficulty and modifiers, with better performance generally leading to better rewards and Power progression.

For beginners, the important lesson is simple:

Do not immediately select the hardest difficulty just because it offers better potential rewards.

Reliable completions at an appropriate difficulty are far more useful while you are learning.

Destiny 2 Power Level Explained in 2026

Returning Guardians need to forget many older Power Level guides.

The massive four-digit Power values used during previous Destiny eras are obsolete.

Following the Power restructuring introduced with The Edge of Fate and later updates, the current hard Power cap is 550.

Monument of Triumph did not increase that cap.

Returning Player Catch-Up

Freshly returning Guardians may find themselves at 10 Power, but current loot can drop at 300 Power or higher to provide rapid catch-up progression.

Bungie removed the previous catch-up chest approach in favor of natural loot drops.

This means a Guardian returning from an older version of Destiny should not panic when old equipment suddenly has drastically different Power values.

The entire scale changed.

Getting Above 300 Power

Once the initial catch-up is complete, activities become much more important.

Portal rewards can continue increasing your Power beyond 300. After Update 9.7.0, sufficiently strong Portal completion grades can provide positive progression all the way toward 550 Power.

Higher performance grades provide larger Power bonuses.

Older activities were also adjusted so their rewards are no longer universally restricted to the old 300-Power boundary.

The practical lesson is to stop treating every random drop as equal.

Check the activity reward information and prioritize content that can actually improve your current Power.

Do Not Confuse Power Level With Gear Tier

This distinction is extremely important.

Power and Gear Tier are not the same thing.

Power primarily determines your progression relative to activity difficulty.

Gear Tier represents the quality and additional capabilities of modern weapons and armor.

A weapon can therefore be valuable because of its perks and Tier even when another weapon drops at a higher Power.

This is why beginners should not automatically dismantle every lower-Power weapon.

You can increase the Power of equipment you want to keep through infusion.

How Weapon Gear Tiers Work

Modern Destiny 2 weapons can use a Tier 1–5 Gear Tier system.

Higher tiers provide additional advantages.

The original system introduced benefits such as enhanced perks, additional perk choices, enhanced components, enhanced mods, improved origin traits, and special Tier 5 cosmetic features.

Monument of Triumph expanded this system further by allowing compatible lower-tier weapons to be upgraded through Gear Tiers.

That fundamentally changes how you should evaluate drops.

Perks Still Matter More Than the Number Alone

A higher Tier does not automatically make a badly rolled weapon better than every lower-Tier version.

Perk combinations matter enormously.

Bungie specifically notes that lower-tier weapons with synergistic perks can outperform higher-tier weapons with poor perk combinations.

When deciding whether to keep a Legendary weapon, examine:

  • Weapon archetype

  • Element

  • Main perks

  • Origin Trait

  • Gear Tier

  • How it fits your build

  • Whether you actually enjoy using it

Do not dismantle a great roll simply because it is not Tier 5.

What Makes a Good Weapon Roll?

Destiny players commonly call an excellent perk combination a god roll.

There is rarely one universal god roll for every activity.

A weapon can have an excellent PvE roll and a completely different optimal PvP roll.

PvE Weapon Perks

PvE players generally value combinations that improve:

  • Damage

  • Reloading

  • Ammo economy

  • Ability synergy

  • Crowd clearing

  • Elemental effects

  • Sustained boss damage

For example, a perk that gains damage after defeating enemies can be excellent when clearing large groups but much less useful against a boss where no extra enemies are available.

PvP Weapon Perks

PvP frequently rewards:

  • Range

  • Stability

  • Handling

  • Accuracy

  • Faster activation requirements

  • Duel-winning damage bonuses

This is why copying a weapon recommendation without understanding the activity it was designed for can produce poor results.

Read perk descriptions and test weapons yourself.

Understand Weapon Ammo Types

Destiny 2 broadly separates weapons through ammo economy.

Primary Weapons

Primary-ammo weapons are your dependable tools for ordinary combat.

They do not rely on the limited Special or Heavy ammunition economy, making them ideal for dealing with common enemies.

Special Weapons

Special weapons generally provide significantly higher burst damage or specialized utility.

Common examples include weapons such as Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Fusion Rifles, and other Special-ammo options.

Heavy Weapons

Heavy weapons are typically reserved for the strongest enemies and boss damage.

Rocket Launchers, Heavy Grenade Launchers, Machine Guns, Linear Fusion Rifles, Swords, and other Heavy options can completely change how efficiently a fireteam handles major targets.

A common beginner mistake is saving Heavy ammo forever.

If killing a dangerous Champion, miniboss, or boss quickly prevents your fireteam from wiping, using Heavy ammo is usually worth it.

Armor 3.0 Explained

Armor received one of Destiny 2's biggest system overhauls with Armor 3.0.

Modern armor can have Gear Tiers, archetypes, set bonuses, and the redesigned stat system.

Armor 3.0 sets can activate additional perks when you equip two or four matching pieces from the same set.

This means armor selection is no longer purely about obtaining the highest possible raw stat total.

A slightly different stat distribution may be worthwhile if it completes an important set bonus.

Destiny 2 Armor Stats in 2026

Returning players may remember stats such as Mobility, Resilience, Recovery, Discipline, Intellect, and Strength.

That old system was reworked.

The current six major armor stats are:

  • Health

  • Melee

  • Grenade

  • Super

  • Class

  • Weapons

Stats can scale as high as 200, with their effects changing as you invest beyond 100.

Health

Health is one of the easiest stats for a beginner to understand and benefit from.

It improves survivability-related effects, including healing from Orbs of Power and defensive benefits.

If you constantly die before your build can do anything useful, more survivability is usually more valuable than squeezing out a small amount of extra damage.

Melee

Melee improves melee ability regeneration and, at higher investment, melee damage.

Prioritize it for builds heavily dependent on powered melee abilities or melee gameplay loops.

Grenade

Grenade improves grenade recharge and can increase grenade ability damage at higher investment.

Grenade-focused builds can become extremely powerful when combined with the right subclass, Exotic armor, and mods.

Super

Super investment improves how your Super is generated and can increase Super damage at higher stat values.

This can matter particularly for builds centered around frequent or high-impact Supers.

Class

Class affects your class ability.

That means dodge-focused Hunters, barricade-focused Titans, and Rift-focused Warlocks can benefit differently depending on the build.

Weapons

Weapons improves weapon-oriented performance and becomes particularly valuable for Guardians building heavily around gunplay.

Do not try to maximize all six stats.

A good build chooses two or three important priorities and accepts weaker investment elsewhere.

Use Armor Set Bonuses

Modern Armor 3.0 sets provide bonuses for combining matching pieces.

Generally, bonuses activate at the two-piece and four-piece thresholds.

These effects can provide significant advantages that complement particular activities or playstyles. Bungie's current beginner FAQ uses the Ferropotent set as an example, where equipping multiple pieces unlocks additional defensive effects.

Beginners often make one of two mistakes:

They either ignore set bonuses completely or obsess over completing a set while wearing terrible armor.

You want balance.

Prioritize useful stats and valuable bonuses rather than blindly chasing either one.

Exotic Weapons and Armor

Exotics are some of the most important pieces of equipment in Destiny 2.

Their unique perks can completely transform your playstyle.

An Exotic armor piece might dramatically improve a particular Super, grenade, melee, weapon category, or subclass mechanic.

An Exotic weapon can provide behavior that no Legendary equivalent can reproduce.

That makes Exotics especially important for buildcrafting.

However, an Exotic being rare does not automatically mean it is good for your current build.

Choose gear with a purpose.

If an Exotic enhances Solar abilities while you are playing Void, you are probably wasting much of its potential.

Monument of Triumph also elevated the Exotic ecosystem. Bungie added 25 new Exotic weapon catalysts and upgraded several older catalysts, while modern Exotic armor received Tier 5 stat treatment.

Weapon Crafting Still Matters

Weapon crafting remains part of Destiny 2.

It is unlocked through early progression associated with The Witch Queen and the Relic at the Enclave.

Craftable weapons use Patterns. Pattern progress is primarily obtained from Deepsight weapons, while Deepsight Harmonizers can help progress eligible patterns under specific conditions.

Once a Pattern is unlocked, you can shape the weapon and eventually access additional components and perks as it levels.

Monument of Triumph also connected crafted weapons to the modern Gear Tier system, allowing eligible crafted Legendary weapons to progress through Tier upgrades.

For beginners, crafting is useful but should not become an obsession.

You do not need every weapon Pattern.

Focus on weapons you actually intend to use.

Currencies and Materials You Should Understand

Destiny 2 contains many currencies, but beginners only need to understand the most important ones first.

Glimmer

Glimmer is Destiny's basic currency.

You use it throughout numerous progression systems, including purchases and equipment-related costs.

The current Glimmer cap is 500,000.

Do not be afraid to spend Glimmer when it meaningfully progresses your character.

Enhancement Materials

As you move into higher-level gear optimization, materials such as Enhancement Cores, Enhancement Prisms, Ascendant Shards, and other upgrade resources become increasingly important.

These should be spent more carefully than Glimmer.

Avoid dumping expensive upgrade materials into mediocre equipment you are likely to replace quickly.

Legendary Shards

Returning players should know that Legendary Shards have been deprecated.

Old planetary materials have also largely been retired from the systems where returning players may remember using them. Bungie's current FAQ specifically advises returning players that these currencies are no longer required for gear infusion.

If an old guide tells you to farm Legendary Shards, it is outdated.

What Content Is Free in Destiny 2?

Destiny 2 can be installed and played without immediately buying every expansion.

Bungie's current free-access list includes the New Light experience, Arc, Solar, Void and Stasis subclasses, destination exploration, Guardian Ranks, the Portal, Crucible, Gambit, and selected PvE/endgame content.

The Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns are also currently available to all players.

Free raids include:

  • Vault of Glass

  • King's Fall

  • Crota's End

The Prophecy dungeon is also available without purchasing the wider expansion collection.

This gives new players enough content to decide whether they enjoy Destiny before buying everything.

Which Destiny 2 Campaigns Should Beginners Play?

If you care about the story, Bungie recommends progressing through the available content in roughly chronological order, although the game does not require you to do so.

The major accessible campaign path includes content from:

  • Shadowkeep

  • Beyond Light

  • The Witch Queen

  • Lightfall

  • The Final Shape

  • The Edge of Fate

  • Renegades

Not every campaign is included in the free version.

The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades are included in the current Destiny 2: The Collection bundle and can also be acquired through the relevant storefront offerings.

Do not feel forced to complete every campaign before touching another activity.

If you find a dungeon, PvP mode, Exotic mission, or Portal activity more enjoyable, play it.

Destiny is much easier to stick with when you follow the content you actually enjoy.

Guardian Ranks Are Your Built-In Learning Path

Guardian Ranks represent your knowledge and experience with Destiny's different systems.

Each rank provides objectives that gradually introduce more mechanics and activities.

For new players, Guardian Rank progression is particularly valuable because early ranks can permanently unlock gameplay features including additional armor functionality and loadout-related features.

Think of Guardian Ranks as more than a number next to your name.

They provide a useful checklist when you are unsure what you should learn next.

Do not rush higher ranks purely for prestige.

If an objective introduces a mechanic you do not understand, use it as an opportunity to learn that system.

Buildcrafting: How Beginners Should Approach It

You do not need a perfectly optimized build to finish New Light or normal campaign activities.

You should, however, start learning why your gear works together.

A Destiny build combines:

  • Class

  • Subclass

  • Super

  • Abilities

  • Aspects

  • Fragments

  • Exotic armor

  • Weapons

  • Armor stats

  • Armor mods

  • Armor set bonuses

  • Artifact perks

The goal is synergy.

Bungie's own current build guide recommends first deciding what your build is supposed to accomplish rather than equipping individually powerful items with no connection to one another.

Build for Survivability First

For difficult PvE content, staying alive is often more valuable than theoretical maximum damage.

A dead Guardian deals zero damage.

Look for combinations that provide healing, damage resistance, defensive subclass effects, crowd control, or reliable ways to escape dangerous situations.

Then Add Damage

Once you can reliably survive an activity, improve your offensive output.

That may mean investing in:

  • Weapon damage

  • Grenade damage

  • Melee damage

  • Super damage

  • Elemental debuffs

  • Damage buffs

  • Better boss-damage weapons

The best builds usually create a repeatable gameplay loop rather than relying on one strong ability.

Use Loadouts

Destiny 2 has an integrated loadout system.

Instead of manually changing every piece of equipment before every activity, you can save builds and quickly equip them later.

The current system supports up to 12 loadouts, with additional slots tied to Guardian Rank progression.

Once you start building seriously, create separate loadouts for different purposes.

For example:

  • General PvE

  • Boss damage

  • High-survivability PvE

  • PvP

  • Raid encounters

This will save considerable time later.

When Should You Start Dungeons?

Dungeons are three-player endgame PvE activities featuring more complicated mechanics, difficult encounters, bosses, and exclusive loot.

Current Destiny 2 includes dungeons such as Prophecy, Grasp of Avarice, Duality, Ghosts of the Deep, Warlord's Ruin, Vesper's Host, Sundered Doctrine, Equilibrium, and others. Access depends on the content you own.

You are ready to start learning dungeons when you can:

  • Survive normal PvE encounters reliably

  • Understand your subclass

  • Handle majors and bosses efficiently

  • Use Special and Heavy ammo properly

  • Follow simple encounter mechanics

  • Communicate with teammates

You do not need perfect gear.

A patient team and willingness to learn mechanics are much more important for your first completion.

When Should You Start Raiding?

Raids are Destiny 2's signature six-player endgame activities.

They combine combat with mechanics, puzzles, communication, coordination, and boss damage.

The current raid lineup includes activities such as Vault of Glass, King's Fall, Crota's End, Deep Stone Crypt, Vow of the Disciple, Root of Nightmares, Salvation's Edge, The Desert Perpetual, and others.

Your first raid becomes much easier when you already understand:

  • Your subclass

  • Your build

  • Champion or activity modifiers when applicable

  • Boss DPS fundamentals

  • Reviving teammates

  • Staying alive under pressure

  • Basic communication

You do not need the absolute best meta weapons before joining a beginner-friendly raid.

You do need to listen and be willing to perform mechanics.

Use Fireteam Finder

You do not need five friends who already play Destiny to experience raids and other cooperative activities.

Destiny 2 includes Fireteam Finder, its built-in LFG system.

It can be accessed through the roster interface and is specifically recommended by Bungie for players searching for teammates.

When learning difficult content, look for groups marked appropriately for teaching or beginners rather than joining teams expecting fast experienced clears.

A learning group will usually provide a much better first experience.

Monument of Triumph Matters Even to New Players

Monument of Triumph is not only a veteran celebration.

It became part of Destiny 2's permanent end-state in June 2026.

The Monument is located in the Tower and provides a large collection of Triumph-based objectives.

Completing Monument Triumphs awards Legendary Marks, which can be exchanged through the Guardian Tenet vendors for rewards including weapon engrams, armor ornaments, accessories, and other items.

It also refreshed many older parts of Destiny.

The update introduced or expanded:

  • Updated Director navigation

  • Portal improvements

  • Destination updates

  • Distortions

  • Updated raid and dungeon loot

  • Permanent Pantheon content

  • Weapon Tier upgrading

  • Additional Exotic catalysts

  • New Armor 3.0 archetypes

  • Expanded vendor focusing

  • Additional Monument rewards

For a returning player, this is one of the best places to familiarize yourself with Destiny 2's final major version.

Old Weapons and Armor Are Not Automatically Useless

Returning players frequently ask whether they should dismantle their entire Vault.

Do not do that.

Bungie's advice is that older weapons and armor remain perfectly valid starting equipment.

Modern Tiered gear can eventually outperform older equipment through better stats, Armor Set Bonuses, additional perk options, and Gear Tier benefits, but that does not mean every old weapon became worthless overnight.

Keep weapons you enjoy.

Especially keep rare rolls or weapons with perk combinations that still perform well.

Replace equipment gradually when you obtain a genuine upgrade.

Common Destiny 2 Beginner Mistakes

Dismantling Weapons Without Checking the Perks

Never judge a Legendary weapon only by its Power or Tier.

Check the roll first.

A strong perk combination can be worth keeping for a very long time.

Spending Rare Materials Too Early

Do not fully invest in every armor piece you receive.

Early progression replaces gear frequently.

Save expensive materials for equipment that has strong stats, useful set bonuses, or long-term build value.

Copying Endgame Builds Without Understanding Them

A build from a video or guide may require several specific interactions.

If one Exotic, Fragment, weapon perk, or armor mod is missing, the entire loop may stop working.

Understand why a build works before copying it.

Ignoring Survivability

New players frequently chase damage numbers while constantly dying.

Improve survivability first.

You will contribute more by remaining alive than by creating a theoretically stronger build that you cannot use safely.

Using Only Primary Weapons

Special and Heavy ammunition exists to be used.

Learn when to spend powerful ammo rather than saving everything until the activity is already over.

Trying to Learn Everything at Once

Destiny has an enormous number of systems.

You do not need to understand raids, crafting, PvP, Armor 3.0, Exotic catalysts, weapon Tier upgrading, every subclass, and every currency immediately.

Learn one layer at a time.

Best Progression Approach for a New Player

Rather than attempting to complete every available objective, build your Guardian around a few clear priorities.

First, complete enough New Light content to understand combat, navigation, and the Tower.

Next, experiment with your class and subclasses until you know which playstyle feels comfortable.

Then begin collecting better weapons and armor while increasing your Power through content appropriate for your current level.

Once you understand basic buildcrafting, gradually enter more demanding Portal activities, Exotic missions, dungeons, and eventually raids.

There is no requirement to finish every piece of old content before experiencing endgame Destiny.

Progress when you feel comfortable, not when a checklist tells you that you should.

Destiny 2 Beginner FAQ

What Is the Maximum Power Level in Destiny 2 in 2026?

The current hard cap is 550 Power.

Monument of Triumph did not raise the cap, and Update 9.7.0 improved Power progression through Portal rewards.

Is Destiny 2 Free to Play?

Destiny 2 has a substantial amount of content available without purchasing an expansion.

This currently includes New Light, several subclasses, destination exploration, Crucible, Gambit, the Portal, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaign content, three free raids, Prophecy, and other selected activities.

Additional campaigns, raids, dungeons, Exotics, and expansion-specific content require the relevant paid content.

Which Destiny 2 Class Is Best for Beginners?

There is no universally best beginner class.

Titan can feel forgiving for players who like direct combat, Warlock provides powerful ability and healing options, while Hunter offers excellent movement and flexible offensive tools.

Pick the class whose movement and abilities feel best to you.

Can I Unlock Stasis for Free?

Yes.

Beyond Light's campaign is currently available to all players, and completing the required progression unlocks Stasis.

Are Strand and Prismatic Free?

No.

Strand requires progression through Lightfall, while Prismatic requires progression through The Final Shape. Those expansions must be owned to access the respective subclasses.

Should I Delete My Old Weapons?

Not automatically.

Older equipment can still be useful. Check the weapon's perks and how it performs before dismantling it. Modern Tiered weapons provide additional benefits, but a strong older roll may remain valuable.

What Should I Spend Glimmer On?

Use Glimmer for meaningful character progression, such as subclass unlocks and other useful purchases.

It is a common currency and currently caps at 500,000, so permanently hoarding it provides little benefit.

What Is the Difference Between Power and Gear Tier?

Power determines an item's contribution toward your overall Power Level and your ability to handle higher-level content.

Gear Tier determines additional characteristics and upgrade potential of modern weapons and armor.

A Tier 5 weapon is not simply the same thing as a 550-Power weapon.

Do I Need Three Characters?

No.

One character is enough to experience Destiny 2.

Creating a Hunter, Warlock, and Titan gives you more build options and lets you experience the game from three different class perspectives, but it is not required for beginners.

Can Solo Players Enjoy Destiny 2?

Absolutely.

Campaigns, destination activities, Solo Ops, Lost Sectors, many quests, and other content can be played alone.

When you reach activities that require or strongly benefit from a team, Fireteam Finder provides an in-game way to find other players.

Final Tips for New and Returning Guardians

Destiny 2 looks far more complicated from the menus than it feels once you actually begin playing.

You do not need perfect weapons.

You do not need a Tier 5 version of everything.

You do not need 200 points in every armor stat.

You do not need to memorize every raid.

And you definitely do not need to understand years of Destiny terminology before enjoying the game.

Focus on learning your Guardian first.

Find a class you enjoy. Understand one subclass. Get comfortable with a few weapon types. Build enough survivability to stay alive. Learn how Power and Gear Tiers work. Then gradually move from campaigns and ordinary activities into Portal progression, Exotic missions, dungeons, and raids.

For returning Guardians, the most important thing is to avoid applying outdated Destiny knowledge to the 2026 game. Power has been rescaled, armor has been redesigned, Gear Tiers have become central to loot progression, and the Portal and Monument of Triumph now define much of Destiny 2's modern structure.

Once those systems make sense, Destiny 2 becomes much easier to navigate—and its enormous library of activities becomes something to explore instead of something to worry about.
