Why ascension takes so long

Soul Echoes to process: heroes and bosses drop Soul Echoes in Ascendant content, and they must be turned into Soul Fragments before you can ascend.
Expensive awakenings: a single level 94 Epic can need 200,000 Iron Bits plus Ashes of Awakening and other materials.
Random affixes: the Ascended Affix you get depends on the roll, so a perfect result can take many rerolls.
The right order: an Ascended Affix doesn't carry over when an Epic is awakened, so awakening has to come first.
