Unexpected — more surprising additions such as Zephras Isle, introduced carefully so they do not overwhelm the identity of original WoW.
This distinction explains why Forever's new world does not simply feel like "four new expansion zones."
Each region serves a different purpose.

Riverglades
Riverglades is the largest clearly defined new leveling zone revealed for WoW Forever.
It is a rugged frontier containing:
Rivers.
Grasslands.
Trade routes.
Settlements.
Goblin activity.
Ogre threats.
Gnoll camps.
Faction conflicts.
Old grudges between local groups.
Blizzard originally described the zone as containing more than 150 quests across much of the mid-30s to mid-40s leveling experience. A later official presentation described it as having nearly 200 quests for Horde and Alliance players, suggesting the zone is a substantial part of the 1–60 journey rather than a small side area.
Where Is Riverglades?
Riverglades is built from a part of original Azeroth that was previously inaccessible.
Blizzard describes it as connected geographically and thematically to regions including:
Redridge Mountains.
Burning Steppes.
Badlands.
Swamp of Sorrows.
The zone is roughly comparable in scale to Stranglethorn Vale, making it one of Forever's biggest additions to the existing world.
Powderfuse Port
One important Riverglades settlement is Powderfuse Port.
The port connects the zone with a new Steamwheedle Cartel travel route beginning in Tanaris.
That connection is significant because Forever wants travel to remain meaningful without making it unnecessarily difficult for players to meet friends or move between regions.
Powderfuse Port also helps establish Riverglades as part of Azeroth's existing trade network rather than an isolated fantasy zone that happens to appear on the map.
Riverglades Factions and Threats
Blizzard has already identified several groups operating in Riverglades.
The Powderfuse goblins are one of the new groups associated with the region.
The Twilight's Hammer also appears, connecting the zone with an established Warcraft threat.
Another group, the Brotherhood of the Horse, is part of the local story.
Gnolls continue conflicts familiar from neighboring territories, while ogres create additional problems throughout the frontier.
This illustrates Forever's world-building approach well.
Riverglades is new, but its inhabitants and conflicts are deliberately connected to the Azeroth players already understand.
What Level Is Riverglades?
Blizzard describes Riverglades as covering much of the mid-30s through mid-40s experience.
That makes it one of the most important zones for characters progressing through the middle of the 1–60 journey.
For a first Forever character, Riverglades should be difficult to justify skipping completely.
It contains too much new quest content and world-building to treat as optional filler.
Shen'dralas
Shen'dralas is another major Forever addition, but it works differently from Riverglades.
Instead of creating an enormous independent frontier, Blizzard is opening a previously inaccessible area connected directly to Desolace, Eldre'Thalas, Dire Maul, and the Shen'dralar.
Players reach the new area south of Desolace through the Valley of Bones.
Why Shen'dralas Matters
Original WoW contains many places where the world clearly seems to continue beyond the playable route.
Shen'dralas is built around exactly that feeling.
Blizzard describes the area as uncovering a long-hidden mystery involving:
The Shen'dralar.
Eldre'Thalas.
Dire Maul.
Regional centaur tribes.
Desolace.
Rather than creating an unrelated new culture, Forever develops lore and geography that already existed around the edges of original Azeroth.
Connection to Eldre'Thalas and Dire Maul
Dire Maul is one of original WoW's most lore-heavy dungeon complexes.
Its connection with the Shen'dralar and ancient Highborne history provides plenty of material that Vanilla only explored partially.
Shen'dralas allows Forever to expand those stories in the outdoor world.
That could make the broader Desolace–Dire Maul region feel far more connected than it did in original WoW.
Blizzard has not yet published a complete quest count or definitive leveling bracket for Shen'dralas, so exact progression routes should remain provisional.
Desolace Is Also Being Expanded
The changes do not stop at the new Shen'dralas area.
Blizzard has confirmed additional content for the centaur faction quests in Desolace, including more faction rewards.
This is an important distinction.
Forever is not simply attaching a new zone to Desolace.
It is also making the existing region more meaningful.
Players who know old Desolace may therefore still encounter new progression even before entering Shen'dralas itself.
Mount Hyjal
Mount Hyjal may be the most anticipated Forever location.
The mountain has enormous importance in Warcraft history, but original World of Warcraft left much of it inaccessible.
Forever finally turns it into a major playable region.
Blizzard describes Hyjal as one of its clearest examples of an "anticipated" addition: a place players have known about and wanted to explore for years.
What Happened at Mount Hyjal?
Forever explores the aftermath of the Battle for Mount Hyjal and Archimonde's defeat.
The region is recovering from the conflict.
Players will meet developing factions, form alliances, explore the damaged landscape, and help influence what happens next.
This is important because Forever is not simply importing the later Cataclysm version of Mount Hyjal.
Its story begins from Forever's own position in Warcraft history.
That allows Blizzard to explore what the mountain looked like much closer to Warcraft III's events.
Darkwhisper Gorge
Blizzard has specifically confirmed Darkwhisper Gorge as part of the Hyjal adventure.
Classic players may recognize the name as one of the mysterious inaccessible or unfinished areas associated with the original world.
Forever can now turn that old mystery into actual gameplay.
Is Mount Hyjal a Leveling Zone?
Hyjal appears positioned primarily as a high-level and endgame region, although Blizzard has not yet published a simple official level range covering every quest in the zone.
It is connected to maximum-level progression and larger Forever storylines.
Players should therefore avoid treating Hyjal as another mid-level zone like Riverglades.
Its role is closer to the bridge between the final part of leveling and the beginning of deeper level-60 adventures.
Hyjal Summit
Mount Hyjal also connects directly to Forever's raid content.
Blizzard has announced Hyjal Summit as a 20-player raid destination.
That gives the region multiple layers:
Outdoor exploration.
Questing.
Faction stories.
High-level progression.
Raid content.
This makes Hyjal one of the most important places in Forever's overall world structure.
Zephras Isle
Zephras Isle is the most unusual of Forever's major new regions.
It is the homeland and starting area of the new Skyborne race.
Blizzard categorizes Zephras as one of Forever's more "unexpected" additions—a place and culture that did not exist as a playable part of original WoW but has been designed to fit into Warcraft's established history.
What Is Zephras Isle?
Zephras is an island tied to the elemental plane of Skywall.
The Skyborne, also known as the shen'dorei, descend from rebels who fled Eldre'Thalas after the War of the Ancients.
They eventually found refuge in Skywall, where wind spirits helped anchor their island home within the elemental realm.
This gives Zephras an interesting connection back to existing Warcraft history.
The Skyborne are new.
But their origin links them to Eldre'Thalas, the Highborne, and ancient Azeroth.
The Crisis on Zephras Isle
When Forever begins, Zephras is in danger.
The elemental benefactors that supported the Skyborne have disappeared.
The pylons keeping the island stable are failing.
Parts of Zephras are collapsing into ruin and darkness.
Several groups compete over the island's future.
Confirmed factions include:
The Windshapers
The High Order
The Al'Aketh
Their competing interests form part of the Skyborne starting storyline.
What Level Is Zephras Isle?
Zephras Isle is a dedicated level 1–12 starting experience.
Skyborne characters should therefore experience it before joining the wider Alliance or Horde leveling routes.
Blizzard describes its visuals as blending Classic Warcraft aesthetics with architecture inspired by Skywall.
Why Zephras Is Different From Riverglades
Riverglades is designed to blend naturally into established Azeroth.
Zephras is deliberately stranger.
Blizzard calls it a more self-contained experience and says unexpected additions like this will be used with restraint.
That prevents Forever from becoming a game where every update introduces another completely unrelated civilization.
Zephras is supposed to feel special precisely because this type of addition is not everywhere.
Starting Zones Are Being Reimagined
Forever's world changes begin immediately.
Original starting zones are not being replaced.
Instead, Blizzard is adding content around the existing experiences.
Confirmed additions include:
New NPCs.
New quests.
Profession hooks.
Recipes.
Small discoveries.
Additional local story moments.
That means familiar locations such as:
Valley of Trials.
Shadowglen.
Elwynn Forest.
Dun Morogh.
Durotar.
Tirisfal Glades.
and the other original starting regions should still feel recognizable.
The objective is not to erase nostalgic questing.
It is to give returning players moments where they realize something new has appeared beside a road they already know.
Tirisfal Glades and Whispering Wood
Tirisfal receives one particularly important new story location.
Bandarion Keep, situated in the Whispering Wood, becomes central to the new Forsaken Paladin storyline.
The area explores the position of former Paladins among the Forsaken, who do not immediately trust these Light-wielding undead.
This is a good example of how Forever expands existing zones.
Tirisfal itself is not being replaced with a completely new map.
Instead, an underused area becomes the home of a major new class story.
These smaller additions may ultimately make old zones feel as different as the headline new regions.
Wetlands
Blizzard has specifically identified Wetlands as another existing region receiving additional attention.
The zone gains new quests and opportunities to develop existing characters and story threads.
Wetlands is also connected to Forever's expanded dungeon content through the new excavation-related dungeon above Whelgar's Excavation.
That combination of new quests and a new dungeon should make the region more significant to mid-level progression than it was previously.
This illustrates an important Forever principle:
A zone does not need to be completely rebuilt to become worth revisiting.
Desolace
Desolace receives two layers of expansion.
First, existing centaur faction content gains new quests and faction rewards.
Second, players gain access to the entirely new Shen'dralas area through the Valley of Bones.
This could make Desolace one of the clearest examples of Forever combining:
Original quests.
New quests.
Expanded factions.
Previously inaccessible geography.
New connected stories.
Players familiar with Vanilla Desolace should therefore expect much more than an unchanged zone leading toward a new doorway.
Elwynn Forest, Darkshore and Ashenvale Receive Environmental Updates
Not every world change is a new quest hub.
Forever is also improving the presentation of original Azeroth while preserving its recognizable art direction.
Blizzard has highlighted environmental rendering changes including:
Flowing rivers through Elwynn Forest.
Mist over the waters of Darkshore.
Moonlight breaking through the trees of Ashenvale.
These changes are intended to make original Azeroth feel richer without replacing its visual identity with modern Retail zone design.
Players can also choose between Classic and modern visual options for some presentation elements.
The goal is restoration and enhancement rather than completely rebuilding every familiar landscape.
Travel Between Zones Is Also Changing
Forever keeps Azeroth large.
There are no flying mounts as part of the core world design.
However, Blizzard is adding transportation routes to make traveling with friends less frustrating.
Confirmed ship routes include connections involving:
Stormwind Harbor and Auberdine
Menethil
Southshore
Auberdine
and a Steamwheedle route from Tanaris toward Riverglades.
This is an important part of the zone redesign.
Adding Riverglades means little if traveling there feels disconnected from the rest of Azeroth.
By integrating it into existing transport networks, Blizzard can make a new region feel like part of the same physical world.
New Areas Are Designed to Connect With Old Ones
One of the biggest differences between Forever and a conventional expansion is the relationship between old and new content.
Traditional expansions often create a progression reset:
Leave the previous continent.
Enter the new continent.
Spend most of your time there.
Forever is trying to avoid that.
Riverglades connects to existing Eastern Kingdoms regions.
Shen'dralas expands Desolace and Dire Maul lore.
Hyjal develops a location players could already see but not properly explore.
Zephras connects its new race back to Eldre'Thalas and ancient Azeroth.
Wetlands receives more story.
Tirisfal gains new class content.
Desolace's centaur progression expands.
Starting zones gain new NPCs and profession hooks.
That creates a world where new development can happen inside Azeroth instead of on top of it.
Which New WoW Forever Zone Is the Biggest?
Based on what Blizzard has revealed, Riverglades appears to be the largest traditional leveling-zone addition.
It is approximately the size of Stranglethorn Vale and contains nearly 200 quests according to Blizzard's latest presentation.
Mount Hyjal may ultimately contain more high-level importance because it connects outdoor content with major endgame progression and Hyjal Summit.
But Riverglades is clearly the zone built to carry the largest portion of the normal leveling journey.
Which Zone Should You Explore First?
That depends on your character.
Skyborne: Zephras Isle naturally comes first because it is the race's level 1–12 starting experience.
Original races: Begin through the traditional starting zones and discover their added quests and profession hooks.
Mid-level characters: Riverglades becomes one of the biggest new destinations.
Characters progressing through Desolace: Explore the expanded centaur content and move toward Shen'dralas when its quests become appropriate.
High-level characters: Mount Hyjal becomes one of Forever's most important new destinations.
There is no reason to force yourself into a region before its content matches your character.
Forever does not use universal level scaling, so geography and character level remain meaningful.
What We Still Do Not Know About the New Zones
Several important details remain incomplete.
Blizzard has not yet fully published:
Every Riverglades quest.
Every Riverglades faction reward.
A definitive full level range for Shen'dralas.
The complete Shen'dralas quest count.
Every Mount Hyjal reputation.
All Hyjal outdoor rewards.
Complete rare-spawn lists.
Full gathering-node distribution.
Every flight path.
Every treasure.
Final zone-specific equipment tables.
Complete reputation vendors.
Because these systems can change during testing, guides should avoid inventing exact progression requirements before they are verified.
The major geography and design direction, however, are already confirmed.
Why WoW Forever's Zone Design Matters
The most important part of Forever's new zones is not the number of square miles being added.
It is where Blizzard is adding them.
Original Azeroth contains dozens of unfinished roads, unreachable valleys, sealed gates, strange ruins, isolated NPCs, and lore threads that never became complete adventures.
Forever is treating those gaps as opportunities.
Blizzard calls the approach "found photographs": discovering stories and locations that feel as though they could have existed in Classic Azeroth all along.
Riverglades demonstrates the "new but familiar" approach.
Mount Hyjal delivers something players have expected for years.
Shen'dralas develops existing Highborne and centaur history.
Zephras demonstrates how a completely new culture can still be tied back into Warcraft's existing past.
And smaller revisions to Wetlands, Desolace, Tirisfal, and the original starting areas prove that the old world itself is not being abandoned.
That may ultimately be the defining feature of WoW Forever.
Instead of asking players to leave original Azeroth behind, Blizzard is asking:
What else was hiding there all along?
