How Gems Work in Trove

Gems are equipped through the Gems section of your character sheet.

Every equipped Gem contributes stats and Power Rank. As you level a Gem, its stats and Power Rank increase.

A complete Gem setup contains 12 Gems.

There are four elements: Water, Air, Fire, and Cosmic. Each element has two Lesser Gem sockets and one Empowered Gem socket, giving you three Gems per element.

That means your complete setup contains eight Lesser Gems and four Empowered Gems.

Gems Are Attached to Their Element

A Water Gem must occupy a Water socket, a Fire Gem must occupy a Fire socket, and so on.

You cannot move a Gem into a socket belonging to another element.

The exception is not that Cosmic Gems can fit anywhere; Cosmic is simply a fourth Gem element with its own three sockets.

Gem Slots Unlock With Class Level

You do not begin with all twelve sockets.

Gem sockets unlock as your class gains levels. Elemental Empowered sockets become available relatively early, while Cosmic sockets arrive later.

The Empowered Cosmic socket unlocks at level 25, followed by Lesser Cosmic sockets at levels 27 and 30.

This makes reaching class level 30 especially important because it gives you access to the complete Gem layout.

Lesser Gems Explained

Lesser Gems are the smaller Gems filling two sockets for each element.

They do not provide special abilities. Their purpose is primarily to supply stats and Power Rank.

Current high-rarity Lesser Gems also follow a damage type.

Fierce Lesser Gems

Fierce Gems provide Physical Damage.

They are intended for classes whose attacks scale from Physical Damage.

Arcane Lesser Gems

Arcane Gems provide Magic Damage.

They are intended for Magic Damage classes.

Lesser Gems of Shadow rarity and higher follow this Fierce or Arcane distinction. A Fierce Gem cannot reroll into Magic Damage, while an Arcane Gem cannot reroll into Physical Damage.

This makes one of the most important Gem rules very simple:

Do not build Arcane Lesser Gems on a Physical Damage class or Fierce Lesser Gems on a Magic Damage class.

Higher Power Rank alone does not compensate for building the wrong damage stat.

Empowered Gems Explained

Empowered Gems occupy the larger Empowered socket for each element.

They provide stats and Power Rank like Lesser Gems but also include an Empowered ability.

Examples of Empowered Gem effects include defensive shields, additional damage effects, movement bonuses, healing interactions, or other combat mechanics.

Only one copy of a particular Empowered ability can be socketed at a time.

Trovesaurus currently lists effects such as Berserk Battler, Cubic Curtain, and numerous other Empowered abilities.

Empowered Gems Matter More Than Lesser Gems

You only have four Empowered sockets, so every one has significant value.

Before investing expensive resources into an Empowered Gem, check three things:

Its ability should be useful for your build.

Its stats should be useful or realistically rerollable.

It should have the maximum number of milestone stat boosts available.

That final point is especially important.

Why 3-Stat Empowered Gems Matter

A Gem receives major stat events at levels 5, 10, and 15.

If a Gem already has three stats, these milestones apply a major stat boost to one of those stats.

If the Gem starts with fewer than three stats, one of those milestone opportunities is instead used to add the missing stat.

The result is that an Empowered Gem starting with only two stats can eventually display three stats, but it cannot recover the stat boost it sacrificed to obtain the missing one.

What Players Mean by “3-Star Empowered Gem”

Players often refer to good Empowered Gems as 3-star Gems.

For Empowered Gems, starting with three stats generally corresponds to the desirable three-star starting condition.

Once the Gem has been leveled beyond 15, the safest way to inspect its original quality is through the Gem Forge. A proper three-stat starting Empowered Gem can have three milestone stat boosts distributed across its stats.

Community players commonly call those stat boosts pearls, although they should not be confused with Pearls of Wisdom used on equipment.

For permanent endgame investment, avoid spending large amounts of expensive augments on an Empowered Gem that permanently lacks one of these boosts.

What Are Class Gems?

Class Gems are special Empowered Gems tied to individual classes.

Instead of simply providing a generic Empowered ability, a Class Gem changes or enhances one of that class's abilities.

That can make the Class Gem a major part of how a class actually plays.

Trovesaurus currently lists class-specific effects such as Aegis Assault for Revenant, Bawk-Bomb for Boomeranger, Scoop n' Gloop for Candy Barbarian, and Razing Tide for Pirate Captain.

How to Get a Class Gem

Class Gems are obtained through the Shores of the Everdark.

A Class Gem Key is used on an Everdark Vault after completing the appropriate colosseum encounter. The resulting Gem is based on the active class when the key is used.

Each class also receives a Class Gem Key when it reaches level 25.

Make sure you are using the class for which you actually want the Gem before opening the vault.

Class Gem Rarity Matters

Class Gems are still Empowered Gems from a progression perspective.

That means rarity, stats, and starting stat boosts still matter.

Crystal Class Gems were added to the Shores of the Everdark progression with the Sunrise update, and the modern Gem system has since extended into Mystic rarity.

Do not automatically pour resources into the first Class Gem you obtain if it has poor long-term potential.

A temporary Class Gem is perfectly acceptable while progressing, but valuable focusing and rerolling resources are better saved for one you intend to keep.

Water, Air, Fire, and Cosmic Gems

Water, Air, and Fire Gems largely follow the same basic stat system.

Cosmic Gems are different.

Water, Air, and Fire Gems

For a normal damage-focused build, these Gems usually revolve around your class's damage type together with offensive secondary stats such as Critical Damage and Critical Hit.

Their primary purpose is to strengthen your damage while contributing Power Rank.

Cosmic Gems

Cosmic Gems are the primary Gem source of Light.

Light is used against enemies with Darkness, making it essential for higher-level progression.

Cosmic Gems can roll Light alongside the usual Gem stat pool, and Light cannot simply be replaced by another damage stat in the same way normal Gem stats can. Cosmic Gems were specifically introduced as a primary method of increasing Light.

For an endgame progression build, Cosmic Gems therefore need to be judged differently from Water, Air, and Fire Gems.

What Stats Can Gems Have?

Current Gems can use stats including:

  • Physical Damage or Magic Damage

  • Critical Damage

  • Critical Hit

  • Maximum Health

  • Maximum Health %

  • Light on Cosmic Gems

New Gems no longer roll Health Regeneration.

You also will not obtain stats such as Movement Speed or Attack Speed directly from the normal Gem stat pool.

Physical Damage

Use Physical Damage if your class scales from Physical Damage.

Examples include many melee and bow-based classes.

Do not place Magic Damage onto a Physical Damage build simply because another statistic on the Gem looks attractive.

Magic Damage

Magic Damage fills the equivalent role for classes using magic-based attacks.

Your elemental Lesser Gems should therefore be Arcane rather than Fierce.

Critical Hit

Critical Hit determines how reliably attacks critically strike.

It is valuable while your total Critical Hit is below what your build requires.

However, once you already have enough Critical Hit from your complete character setup, adding more does not necessarily provide meaningful benefit.

This is why advanced Gem optimization often places milestone boosts into Damage and Critical Damage instead of Critical Hit.

Critical Damage

Critical Damage increases the damage dealt when you critically hit.

It becomes extremely important in developed damage builds because Trove characters can eventually reach very high Critical Hit consistency.

Maximum Health and Maximum Health %

These are defensive choices.

Traditional damage builds usually replace them with offensive stats where possible, but they are not inherently useless.

Current difficult Delve content can punish completely fragile builds, and Rising Tides added an Under Pressure effect at high depths specifically to make extreme progression require more consideration of health and damage rather than only pure offense.

The correct choice therefore depends on your content.

Light

Light deserves separate treatment.

Against enemies with Darkness, having insufficient Light severely restricts your effective damage.

For that reason, Cosmic Gem optimization normally prioritizes Light extremely heavily.

What Are the Best Gem Stats for Damage?

For most conventional damage builds, the starting goal is straightforward.

For a Physical Damage class, Water, Air, and Fire Gems generally want Physical Damage, Critical Damage, and Critical Hit.

For a Magic Damage class, replace Physical Damage with Magic Damage.

Cosmic Gems usually want Light, your appropriate Damage stat, and Critical Damage once your overall Critical Hit needs are satisfied.

However, there is an important distinction between having a stat and placing Gem boosts onto that stat.

They are not the same thing.

What Are Gem Stat Boosts or “Pearls”?

At levels 5, 10, and 15, a properly formed three-stat Gem receives a large boost to one random stat.

The Gem Forge displays where these boosts landed.

Players commonly call them pearls because of how they appear, although “stat boosts” is more technically accurate.

A fully developed Gem that began with all three stats can therefore have three milestone boosts distributed across its stats.

Why Boost Placement Matters

Suppose a Cosmic Gem has:

Light
Physical Damage
Critical Damage

That looks excellent.

But if all three milestone boosts landed on Critical Damage while your goal is maximum Light, the Gem is not yet optimally arranged.

Fortunately, boost locations can be changed.

This is where the Gem Forge becomes important.

Best Stat Boost Distribution

There is no reason for a beginner to obsess over perfect endgame boost mathematics immediately.

The principle matters more than the exact final numbers.

Cosmic Gems

For difficult Darkness-based content, the standard approach is to place all three boosts on Light for each Cosmic Gem.

Recent 2025–2026 player optimization discussions continue to recommend this because Light remains the key Cosmic progression stat.

Across all three Cosmic Gems, that means nine potential milestone boosts focused on Light.

Elemental Empowered Gems

A common current damage optimization places the milestone boosts from Water, Air, and Fire Empowered Gems heavily into Physical Damage or Magic Damage.

One widely used endgame arrangement places all nine Empowered elemental boosts into the appropriate Damage stat.

Elemental Lesser Gems

The remaining Lesser Gem boosts are then distributed between your appropriate Damage stat and Critical Damage.

Current community build conventions often use distributions around 3 Damage / 15 Critical Damage or 4 Damage / 14 Critical Damage across the six elemental Lesser Gems, depending on the class and complete build.

Do not treat either distribution as a universal law.

The exact optimum can change with your class, total stats, gear, subclass, allies, rings, and other build components.

For most players, getting the correct stats and putting Cosmic boosts into Light matters far more than squeezing out the final small difference between two highly optimized damage layouts.

How to Level Gems

Gems are leveled using Gem Dust and other required resources.

The type of dust must match the Gem element.

Water Gems use Water Gem Dust, Fire Gems use Fire Gem Dust, Air Gems use Air Gem Dust, and Cosmic Gems use Cosmic Gem Dust.

Successful levels increase both stats and Power Rank.

Normal Level-Ups

Most levels provide incremental stat increases.

The important early milestones are levels 5, 10, and 15 because those levels create the large stat boosts discussed above.

Levels later in the Gem's progression continue increasing its overall strength.

Gems No Longer Crack

Very old Trove guides may warn you about Gems cracking during failed upgrades.

That information is outdated.

Gems were changed so they no longer crack while leveling. Jade Clovers consequently stopped being used directly for Gem leveling and can instead be converted into Glittering Horseshoes.

A failed upgrade can still consume resources, but you do not need to repair a cracked Gem afterward.

Gem Level-Up Boosters Explained

Gem Boosters improve your chances of successful upgrades and, depending on the item, double level-ups.

Glittering Horseshoe

Glittering Horseshoes increase the level-up chance.

They are the basic useful successor to Jade Clovers for actual leveling.

Lapis Luckbug

Lapis Luckbugs provide a much larger increase to level-up chance and also improve the chance of gaining two levels.

Ninth Life

Ninth Lives are powerful Gem boosters commonly reserved for difficult high-level upgrade attempts.

Trovesaurus currently lists them as providing a 4000% level-up chance increase and a 1000% double-level chance increase.

Tenth Life

Mystic Gems introduced their own high-end booster: Tenth Life.

Tenth Lives use the same listed level-up and double-level bonuses as Ninth Lives but are specifically intended for Mystic Gem progression.

Do not burn your strongest boosters on easy early levels simply because you have them.

Their value is much greater when upgrade chances become poor and each failed attempt becomes expensive.

Gem Rarity and Progression

Gem rarity determines how far the Gem can ultimately develop.

You will encounter several rarities while progressing, but the most relevant long-term stages are Stellar, Crystal, and Mystic.

Early Gems

Lower-rarity Gems are progression tools.

Use them to gain enough Power Rank and stats to unlock better worlds, but avoid spending expensive focusing resources trying to perfect something you will soon replace.

This is particularly important for beginners because Gem Dust can feel abundant at first and disappear quickly once several higher-level Gems need upgrading.

Stellar Gems

Stellar was once the Gem endgame, which is why many older guides still treat it as the ultimate target.

That is no longer true.

Stellar Gems are now an intermediate step that can lead into Crystal progression.

A max-level Stellar Gem can be converted into Crystal while retaining its existing power, stat boosts, and applied focuses.

This makes an excellent Stellar Empowered Gem potentially worth investing in because its progress does not necessarily have to be abandoned.

Crystal Gems

Crystal Gems were introduced with Sunrise and can reach level 30.

Crystal Lesser Gems can be obtained from high-level content, while existing maxed Stellar Gems can be upgraded using a Crystal Gem Converter. A converted Stellar Gem immediately becomes a level-25 Crystal Gem while retaining its existing boosts and augment investment.

Progressing Crystal Gems beyond level 25 requires Gem Sparks in addition to the Gem upgrade system.

Crystal is extremely important, but it is no longer the final tier.

Mystic Gems

Mystic Gems became available with Block Party in September 2025.

They can be found through Gem Boxes in Long Shade, Difficulty 15, and Mystic Empowered Gem Boxes can also be crafted.

A Mystic Gem Converter allows an existing Crystal Gem to be upgraded instead of discarding a well-built Gem. The converter can be crafted using Soul of the Depths and Mystic Gem Shards.

Current Mystic progression extends Gems beyond Crystal's level-30 ceiling to level 35.

Mystic Gems require additional high-end resources, including Mystic Gem Shards, which are found in Long Shade Difficulty 15 and Depths Delves.

For a current 2026 endgame build, Mystic—not Stellar or Crystal—is the eventual Gem destination.

Should You Convert or Replace a Gem?

Converters exist so players do not have to throw away every carefully optimized Gem whenever a new rarity appears.

That does not mean every Gem deserves a converter.

Convert Valuable Empowered Gems

Empowered Gems are generally harder to replace perfectly because you need the correct ability, appropriate stats, and full starting stat-boost potential.

A heavily augmented Empowered Gem with the correct ability can therefore be an excellent converter candidate.

Consider Farming Lesser Gems Instead

Lesser Gems are easier to replace through normal Gem farming.

If you can already farm the content dropping Crystal or Mystic Lesser Gems, using an expensive converter on an ordinary Lesser Gem may be inefficient unless the existing Gem is exceptionally well optimized or resources are not a concern.

A newly obtained higher-tier Lesser Gem with appropriate stats may save the converter for a more difficult Empowered Gem.

How the Gem Forge Works

The Gem Forge is where a random Gem becomes an optimized Gem.

It allows you to inspect and improve stat quality, reroll unwanted stats, and relocate milestone boosts.

This system is one of the most important differences between simply having high-rarity Gems and having a proper endgame Gem build.

Improving Gem Stats With Focuses

Gem stats do not necessarily begin at their maximum possible quality.

Builder's Focus items improve the selected stat and increase the Gem's corresponding Power Rank.

There are three primary Focus strengths.

Builder's Rough Focus provides a small increase.

Builder's Precise Focus provides a moderate increase.

Builder's Superior Focus provides a large increase.

Trovesaurus confirms that all three are Gem Augments used at the Gem Forge to improve a chosen stat and its Power Rank.

Current Gem calculation tools use approximately 2.5%, 5%, and 12.5% quality increases respectively for Rough, Precise, and Superior Focus.

Do Not Focus Temporary Gems

Focus materials can become an important progression bottleneck.

Before spending them heavily, ask whether the Gem has:

The correct rarity or a realistic conversion path.

The correct Empowered ability where relevant.

Three proper starting stats on an Empowered Gem.

A stat combination worth keeping.

Milestone boosts that can realistically be moved into the desired arrangement.

If several of those answers are no, replacing the Gem may be cheaper.

How to Reroll a Gem Stat

The Contained Chaos Spark changes one selected Gem stat into another valid random stat.

This is useful when a promising Gem has one undesirable stat.

For example, a Physical Damage Gem with:

Physical Damage
Critical Damage
Maximum Health

could potentially reroll Maximum Health in search of Critical Hit.

The system cannot create duplicate stats and cannot place Physical Damage and Magic Damage on the same Gem. Fierce and Arcane Lesser Gem restrictions also continue to apply.

Rerolling Does Not Guarantee the Stat You Want

Contained Chaos Spark is a reroll, not a direct stat selector.

You may need multiple attempts.

This is one reason a Gem that already drops with excellent stats can save significant resources.

How to Move Gem Stat Boosts

The Contained Chaos Flare moves one milestone stat boost from one stat to another.

This is how you fix a Gem whose large boosts landed in poor locations.

For example, if a Cosmic Gem has three boosts but only one landed on Light, Chaos Flares can eventually be used to move the other boosts toward Light.

Trovesaurus describes the Contained Chaos Flare specifically as an augment used to move a stat boost at the Gem Forge.

The destination is not completely under your control, so it may take multiple attempts to create the desired arrangement.

How to Judge Whether a Gem Is Good

Do not judge Gems from Power Rank alone.

For an Empowered Gem, first inspect the ability. Then check whether it began with three useful stats and has all three milestone boosts.

For a Lesser Gem, make sure the damage type matches your class and that its remaining stats suit your build.

For Cosmic Gems, check Light carefully.

Then inspect the Gem at the Gem Forge to see:

Which stats it has.

How strong each stat roll currently is.

Where the milestone boosts landed.

How much focusing would be required.

A Gem with slightly lower starting Power Rank but perfect stats and good boost placement can be considerably cheaper to finish than a higher-PR Gem with a poor internal layout.

Cosmic Gems and Light Optimization

Cosmic Gems deserve special attention because Light becomes a progression gate.

At high difficulty, being short on Light cannot simply be compensated for by stacking more Critical Damage.

Long Shade currently requires 42,500 Power Rank and 10,000 Light to enter, showing how both progression values matter independently.

Prioritize Three Light Boosts

For an endgame Cosmic Gem intended for difficult content, inspect it at the Gem Forge and aim for all three milestone boosts on Light.

If they are elsewhere, Contained Chaos Flares can help relocate them.

Berserk Battler

Berserk Battler remains a notable Empowered Cosmic Gem because damaging enemies can trigger states that increase Attack Speed and Light, with the stronger berserk state providing a much greater increase.

It is therefore commonly used in damage-focused endgame setups where its effect fits the class and activity.

That does not mean every character must use exactly the same Empowered Cosmic ability; survivability or specialized builds can justify alternatives.

Common Trove Gem Mistakes

Gem mistakes can be expensive because many resources are consumed permanently.

Upgrading the Wrong Damage Type

Always confirm whether your class uses Physical Damage or Magic Damage.

Perfecting Temporary Low-Rarity Gems

Use temporary Gems to reach better content.

Do not spend your best augments merely to make an early progression Gem perfect.

Investing in a Two-Stat Empowered Gem

If it needs a milestone to gain its third stat, it permanently loses one potential large stat boost.

Use it temporarily if necessary, but do not treat it as a perfect endgame Empowered Gem.

Ignoring Boost Placement

Correct stats alone are not enough.

Inspect where the level 5, 10, and 15 boosts landed.

Putting Cosmic Boosts Anywhere Without Thinking About Light

Light becomes one of the most important high-level progression requirements.

For difficult Darkness content, maximizing Cosmic Light is usually the priority.

Rerolling a Good Stat by Accident

Before using a Chaos Spark, confirm exactly which stat you have selected.

The result is random, and repairing an unnecessary reroll can consume more resources.

Using Strong Boosters on Cheap Levels

Save Ninth Lives and Tenth Lives for levels where the poor success rate and high resource cost justify them.

Converting a Bad Gem Just Because It Is Already Leveled

Converters preserve your investment.

They also preserve a bad foundation.

If the Empowered ability, starting boosts, or overall stat setup is poor, replacing the Gem may still be better.

A Practical Gem Progression Approach

Early progression should be about filling every available socket with useful Gems and gaining enough Power Rank to access better sources.

As stronger Gem Boxes become available, replace weak Gems rather than endlessly repairing them.

Once Stellar-quality Gems become relevant, begin paying closer attention to stats and Empowered abilities.

At Crystal progression, start being selective about which Gems deserve major investment.

For Mystic progression, your goal should be a permanent set with correct stats, full boost potential, deliberate boost placement, and strong stat quality.

The farther you progress, the less important it becomes to ask, “Does this Gem have more Power Rank right now?”

The better question becomes:

“Is this Gem worth the resources required to finish it?”

Trove Gems FAQ

How many Gems can you equip in Trove?

A complete setup contains twelve Gems: two Lesser Gems and one Empowered Gem for each of the Water, Air, Fire, and Cosmic elements.

What is the highest Gem rarity in Trove?

As of 2026, Mystic is the current highest Gem rarity. Mystic Gems were introduced with Block Party in September 2025.

What is the maximum level for Crystal Gems?

Crystal Gems can reach level 30.

What is the maximum level for Mystic Gems?

Current Mystic Gem progression extends to level 35.

Can Stellar Gems become Crystal Gems?

Yes. A max-level Stellar Gem can be converted with a Crystal Gem Converter. It becomes a level-25 Crystal Gem while retaining its existing stat boosts and applied focuses.

Can Crystal Gems become Mystic Gems?

Yes. Mystic Gem Converters upgrade Crystal Gems into Mystic Gems, allowing valuable Crystal Gem stat allocations to be carried into the newer tier.

What are Class Gems?

Class Gems are class-specific Empowered Gems that alter or enhance an ability belonging to that class.

How do you get a Class Gem Key?

One Class Gem Key is awarded when a class reaches level 25. Keys and their fragments can also be obtained through other Gem-related progression.

What stats should Cosmic Gems have?

Damage-focused Cosmic Gems commonly aim for Light, the class's appropriate Physical or Magic Damage stat, and Critical Damage. For high-level Darkness content, the three milestone boosts are normally concentrated on Light.

What are “pearls” on Gems?

Players commonly use “pearls” as slang for the large Gem stat boosts earned at levels 5, 10, and 15. The Gem Forge shows which stats received them. They are not the same item as Pearls of Wisdom used on equipment.

Can Gem stats be changed?

Yes. A Contained Chaos Spark can reroll a selected stat into another valid stat.

Can Gem stat boosts be moved?

Yes. Contained Chaos Flares can move milestone boosts between stats at the Gem Forge.

Do Gems still crack when leveling?

No. Gems no longer crack during upgrade attempts.

Should I upgrade every Gem I find?

No. Upgrade temporary Gems only enough to continue progressing. Save expensive rerolls, focuses, converters, and high-tier boosters for Gems with strong long-term potential.

Final Trove Gem Tips

Gems become much easier to understand when you separate the system into four questions.

First, is the Gem the correct type and rarity?

Second, does it have the right stats for your class?

Third, did its level 5, 10, and 15 boosts land where you need them—or can they be moved there?

Fourth, is the Gem good enough to justify expensive focusing and conversion resources?

For normal damage Gems, prioritize your correct Physical or Magic Damage type together with useful critical stats.

For Cosmic Gems, take Light seriously.

For Empowered and Class Gems, insist on strong starting potential before making major permanent investments.

And for current endgame progression, remember that older guides stopping at Stellar or Crystal are no longer complete. Crystal Gems lead into Mystic Gems, which are now the target for fully developed 2026 builds.
