OSRS Gear Progression Guide – Best Weapons, Armor, and Upgrades

Choosing the right gear upgrades in Old School RuneScape can improve your damage, survivability, and access to harder PvM far more than simply buying the most expensive item available.

How OSRS Gear Progression Works

Your equipment should generally improve in four areas:

  • Damage

  • Accuracy

  • Defence

  • Utility

For most PvM, damage and accuracy usually matter more than simply maximizing defensive stats.

Killing an enemy faster means taking fewer attacks, using fewer supplies, and completing more kills per trip.

Weapons Usually Come Before Expensive Armor

A strong weapon often provides a larger DPS increase than replacing an entire armor set.

For example, moving from a weak melee weapon into an Abyssal whip, specialized stab weapon, or later Osmumten's fang can change your kill speed much more noticeably than upgrading one defensive armor piece.

The same principle applies to Ranged and Magic.

A Bow of faerdhinen setup, Toxic blowpipe, Trident upgrade, or stronger powered staff can matter considerably more than buying expensive boots or minor accuracy upgrades.

Gear Should Match the Enemy

Melee has three primary attack types:

  • Stab

  • Slash

  • Crush

Certain enemies are significantly weaker to one style.

Ranged and Magic also have content-specific interactions, including:

  • Dragon-hunting weapons

  • Demonbane equipment

  • Elemental weaknesses

  • Multi-target weapons

  • Specialized raid weapons

A technically weaker weapon can outperform a more expensive one when its special effect matches the target.

Early Melee Gear Progression

Melee progression begins with the standard metal weapon tiers before quickly moving into quest and minigame rewards.

Early Metal Weapons

Basic progression generally moves through:

  • Bronze

  • Iron

  • Steel

  • Mithril

  • Adamant

  • Rune

You do not need to spend much GP optimizing these tiers.

Early combat levels pass quickly, especially if you use quests such as Waterfall Quest to gain Attack and Strength XP.

Rune Scimitar

At 40 Attack, the Rune scimitar is a strong early weapon because of its fast attack speed and respectable Slash bonuses.

It is especially useful for free-to-play accounts.

Members should view it as temporary equipment while working toward Dragon weapons.

Dragon Scimitar

The Dragon scimitar is one of the first major melee milestones.

It requires:

  • 60 Attack

  • Completion of Monkey Madness I

The weapon remains excellent for Strength training because it allows the aggressive combat style.

It is also inexpensive compared with later upgrades.

Why the Dragon Scimitar Matters

A developing melee account can comfortably use:

  • Dragon scimitar

  • Dragon defender

  • Fighter torso

  • Barrows gloves

  • Helm of Neitiznot

  • Dragon boots

for a surprisingly large amount of content.

You do not need expensive Bandos or Torva equipment before beginning Slayer or mid-game bossing.

Zombie Axe

The Zombie axe is one of the strongest modern mid-game alternatives.

It requires 65 Attack and is particularly effective against enemies weak to Crush while also possessing strong Slash accuracy.

Current melee progression recommendations specifically identify the Zombie axe as a useful weapon against Crush-weak targets.

When to Use It

Consider the Zombie axe for:

  • Moons of Peril

  • Crush-weak monsters

  • Mid-game bossing

  • Accounts that have not reached Abyssal whip progression

Its slower attack speed means it will not universally replace faster weapons, but its high individual hits and accuracy make it extremely useful.

Abyssal Whip

At 70 Attack, the Abyssal whip becomes one of the most important general melee weapons.

It provides:

  • Fast attacks

  • Strong Slash accuracy

  • Good Strength bonus

  • No charge requirement

Current melee progression guidance continues to place it as an important general Slayer and combat-training weapon.

Main Limitation

The whip does not have a normal Strength-only training style.

If you specifically want Strength XP, another weapon may be preferable.

For general PvM, however, it remains excellent value.

Dragon Defender

The Dragon defender should be a priority once you can access the Warriors' Guild and meet the necessary Defence requirement to equip it.

It requires 60 Defence to wield and provides both melee accuracy and Strength bonus in the shield slot.

Why Defenders Are So Important

A normal shield may provide more Defence, but a defender increases your offensive output.

For most melee PvM, that makes it significantly more valuable.

The current equipment guidance treats the Dragon and Avernic defenders as the main offensive melee shield-slot choices except when special protection such as dragonfire defence is required.

Fighter Torso

The Fighter torso from Barbarian Assault is one of the best account-value upgrades in OSRS.

It gives the same melee Strength bonus as a Bandos chestplate while costing no GP.

That makes it particularly valuable before you have a large bank.

Current melee armor guidance notes that the torso can outperform many ordinary defensive body upgrades because of its Strength bonus.

Do You Need a Bandos Chestplate Immediately?

No.

The Fighter torso remains perfectly viable for a huge amount of mid-game PvM.

Spend your money on higher-impact upgrades first.

Barrows Gloves

Completing Recipe for Disaster unlocks Barrows gloves.

They provide useful offensive bonuses across all three combat styles, making them one of the strongest account-wide upgrades available in the mid-game.

They remain useful even after you begin raiding.

Current raid equipment recommendations still list Barrows gloves as a viable alternative behind specialized high-end gloves.

Helm of Neitiznot and Faceguard

The Helm of Neitiznot is an excellent early-to-mid melee helm.

Later, the Neitiznot faceguard becomes a stronger offensive upgrade.

The faceguard is particularly useful because it provides melee Strength while maintaining useful defensive stats.

It is generally a much more meaningful offensive purchase than buying ordinary Dragon armor pieces.

Why Full Dragon Armor Is Usually Not a Priority

Dragon armor looks like a logical upgrade after Rune, but most Dragon armor provides Defence rather than melee Strength.

Current melee armor guidance specifically notes that by the time players can equip Dragon armor, gear focused on Strength or Prayer is generally more useful.

That means pieces such as:

  • Fighter torso

  • Barrows equipment

  • Prayer armor

  • Offensive accessories

often provide better account value.

Barrows Armor

Barrows equipment becomes highly useful when Defence matters.

Common examples include:

  • Dharok's

  • Guthan's

  • Torag's

  • Verac's

Different sets have different effects, but individual pieces also provide strong defensive stats.

Current melee progression guidance specifically recommends Barrows armor for general Defence and activities such as Perilous Moons.

When Barrows Is Better Than Strength Gear

Use defensive armor when:

  • You are taking too much damage

  • The encounter rewards high Defence

  • Longer trips matter more than maximum DPS

  • You are learning mechanics

  • Protection Prayers do not completely block damage

Moons of Peril is a good example.

Blood Moon Armor

Blood Moon equipment provides a modern mid-game melee alternative.

Its pieces offer offensive melee bonuses, and the full set works with the Dual macuahuitl.

Current melee progression references include the Blood Moon setup for combat training and certain bosses.

It is particularly attractive for players who want offensive armor without immediately moving into expensive high-end melee equipment.

Bandos Armor

Bandos remains a major late-game melee milestone.

The primary pieces are:

  • Bandos chestplate

  • Bandos tassets

They combine melee Strength with strong defensive bonuses.

Fighter Torso vs Bandos Chestplate

Do not assume the chestplate needs to be purchased first.

Because the Fighter torso already provides comparable Strength, the Bandos tassets may often represent the more distinct offensive upgrade when choosing between the two.

The chestplate is still useful for its additional Defence and convenience.

Amulet of Fury

The Amulet of fury is one of the best general-purpose mid-game necklaces.

It provides:

  • Melee offensive bonuses

  • Ranged bonuses

  • Magic bonuses

  • Defence

  • Prayer

That versatility makes it particularly valuable for accounts that frequently switch combat styles.

You do not need three specialized necklaces immediately.

Amulet of Torture and Amulet of Rancour

The Amulet of torture is a major melee offensive upgrade.

It requires 75 Hitpoints and provides strong melee attack and Strength bonuses.

At the high end, the Amulet of rancour upgrades the Torture using an Araxyte fang obtained from Araxxor.

Rancour requires 90 Hitpoints and currently provides best-in-slot melee attack and Strength bonuses in the neck slot.

Upgrade Priority

For most accounts:

Fury → Torture → Rancour

is a reasonable progression, but Rancour should be viewed as a late/endgame upgrade rather than something a developing account needs immediately.

Berserker Ring

The Berserker ring becomes significantly stronger once imbued.

Because it provides melee Strength rather than only accuracy, it is an important general melee ring for many activities.

At higher budgets, specialized rings become available.

Ultor and Bellator Rings

The Desert Treasure II bosses unlock progression toward stronger Ancient rings.

For melee:

  • Ultor ring focuses on melee Strength.

  • Bellator ring emphasizes Slash accuracy.

These should be viewed as late-game upgrades for players already using strong weapons and armor.

A cheaper Berserker ring (i) remains perfectly adequate for much of the game.

Fire Cape

Defeating TzTok-Jad and completing the Fight Caves rewards the Fire cape.

This is one of the most important melee upgrades because the cape slot otherwise has relatively weak offensive alternatives.

Current equipment progression guidance specifically treats the Fire cape as a priority before the Infernal cape.

Why You Should Earn It Early

The Fire cape:

  • Costs no GP after completion

  • Improves melee damage

  • Builds PvM experience

  • Remains useful until Inferno completion

It is one of the highest-value permanent upgrades a mid-game account can earn.

Infernal Cape

The Infernal cape is the direct endgame progression from the Fire cape.

It is earned by completing the Inferno and defeating TzKal-Zuk.

Because the upgrade requires player skill rather than simply buying an item, it represents an important PvM milestone.

Current gear guidance places the Infernal cape directly above the Fire cape for melee combat.

Late-Game Melee Weapons

Once basic melee gear is established, weapon choice becomes increasingly content-specific.

Osmumten's Fang

Osmumten's fang is one of the most useful late-game melee weapons because of its exceptional performance against high-defence enemies.

Current melee progression recommendations specifically list it for content including:

  • Tombs of Amascut

  • Nex

  • Vorkath

Where Fang Excels

It is particularly valuable when:

  • The enemy has high Defence

  • Stab is effective

  • Accuracy matters more than fast low-damage attacks

It does not replace every melee weapon, but it covers an enormous amount of bossing content.

Abyssal Tentacle

The Abyssal tentacle upgrades an Abyssal whip using a Kraken tentacle.

It provides higher offensive stats but consumes whips over time.

Current progression references continue to recommend it for general Slayer, bossing, and Theatre of Blood entry setups.

This makes it a strong transitional weapon before expensive endgame Slash options.

Noxious Halberd

The Noxious halberd from Araxxor provides strong melee performance and extended attack range.

Current gear recommendations place it as a viable option for bosses and raids where its Slash performance or extra reach is beneficial.

It is a good example of why modern melee progression is no longer just:

Whip → expensive sword → Scythe.

Different weapons now occupy meaningful niches.

Dragon Hunter Lance

The Dragon hunter lance is a specialized melee weapon for dragons.

It remains particularly effective at content such as:

  • Vorkath

  • Chambers of Xeric

  • Other dragon enemies

Current melee progression guidance continues to list it as a content-specific late-game upgrade.

Do not buy it as a general-purpose melee weapon unless dragon content is a major part of your plans.

Demonbane Melee Weapons

Demon-focused equipment can outperform ordinary weapons against demonic enemies.

Modern melee progression includes Emberlight as an advanced demon-specific weapon.

This is why specialized upgrades should be evaluated according to the content you actually play.

Soulreaper Axe

The Soulreaper axe is a powerful endgame melee weapon assembled from components obtained from the Desert Treasure II bosses.

It provides extremely strong offensive performance but has a more demanding mechanic than simpler weapons.

Current progression guidance describes it as a powerful alternative below Scythe-tier investment for certain content.

It rewards players who understand how to manage its effect rather than simply equipping it and attacking normally.

Scythe of Vitur

The Scythe of vitur remains one of OSRS's defining endgame melee weapons.

It is obtained from Theatre of Blood and is exceptionally strong against targets where its multi-hit mechanics can be fully utilized.

Current Theatre of Blood recommendations place the Scythe at the top of its melee weapon hierarchy.

Why Scythe Is Not Your First Major Purchase

It is:

  • Extremely expensive

  • Expensive to operate

  • Not universally best

  • Most valuable when your account already has strong supporting gear

A player with weak Ranged and Magic setups should usually build a more balanced account before committing most of their bank to a Scythe.

Torva Armor

Torva is one of the premier endgame melee armor sets.

It requires 80 Defence and provides excellent Defence alongside high melee Strength.

The set consists of:

  • Torva full helm

  • Torva platebody

  • Torva platelegs

Should You Rush Torva?

Usually not.

Torva pieces are powerful, but each individual Strength increase can be extremely expensive.

Weapons, necklaces, defenders, rings, Prayers, and upgrades in your weaker combat styles can often provide more total account value first.

Oathplate Armor

Oathplate is a newer endgame melee set associated with Yama.

Current high-end melee recommendations include Oathplate particularly for Slash-focused content and Theatre of Blood.

It should be viewed as specialized high-end equipment rather than a universal replacement for every melee armor setup.

Early Ranged Gear Progression

Ranged starts with basic bows and leather armor before rapidly improving through dragonhide and quest rewards.

Shortbows

Shortbows are excellent for early training because of their attack speed.

Typical progression moves through:

  • Shortbow

  • Oak shortbow

  • Willow shortbow

  • Maple shortbow

  • Magic shortbow

The exact ammunition used should depend on your budget.

Magic Shortbow (i)

The Magic shortbow becomes significantly better after being imbued.

It remains one of the best inexpensive Ranged weapons for general training and some PvM.

Current Ranged equipment recommendations continue to list the Magic shortbow (i) as a useful lower-cost option.

Rune Crossbow

The Rune crossbow is one of the most important early-to-mid Ranged weapons.

Its major advantage is access to enchanted bolts.

Depending on the target, bolts such as Ruby and Diamond variants can provide excellent bossing performance even when using a relatively inexpensive crossbow.

Current raid progression recommendations still include the Rune crossbow as an entry-level alternative before stronger crossbows and bows.

Ava's Devices

Animal Magnetism unlocks Ava's equipment.

Progression eventually moves toward:

  • Ava's attractor

  • Ava's accumulator

  • Ava's assembler

These devices reduce ammunition loss and provide useful Ranged bonuses.

Ava's assembler is obtained through progression involving Vorkath after Dragon Slayer II.

It remains an important Ranged cape-slot upgrade until Dizana's quiver.

Black Dragonhide and Blessed Dragonhide

Black dragonhide provides affordable Ranged accuracy and Magic Defence.

Blessed dragonhide improves on it while also offering Prayer bonus.

Current Ranged armor guidance confirms that Blessed dragonhide offers better bonuses than ordinary black dragonhide while requiring 70 Ranged for the main pieces.

Why Blessed D'hide Is So Useful

It is:

  • Relatively affordable

  • Non-degradable

  • Good for Slayer

  • Good for questing

  • Useful for bossing

  • Useful where Prayer matters

You do not need Armadyl armor before beginning serious Ranged PvM.

Eclipse Moon Equipment

Eclipse Moon armor and the Eclipse atlatl provide a modern hybrid Ranged setup obtained through Moons of Peril.

Current Ranged progression guidance includes the full setup as a viable hybrid option.

The atlatl has unusual scaling and can fit encounters where switching between melee and Ranged is useful.

It is not a direct universal replacement for ordinary bows or crossbows.

Toxic Blowpipe

The Toxic blowpipe remains one of the most useful Ranged weapons in OSRS.

It requires 75 Ranged.

Current gear guides continue to recommend it for:

  • Slayer

  • Bossing

  • Raids

  • Low-Defence enemies

Why Blowpipe Remains Important

It attacks extremely quickly.

Against appropriate targets, that makes it excellent for:

  • Dealing with adds

  • Healing with its special attack

  • Fast Slayer

  • Raid rooms

  • General bossing

Its performance depends heavily on dart choice and enemy Defence.

Bow of Faerdhinen and Crystal Armor

The Bow of faerdhinen, commonly called Bowfa, is one of the biggest Ranged progression milestones.

It requires an enhanced crystal weapon seed and crystal shards, with Song of the Elves required for the associated crystal progression.

Its performance becomes much stronger when paired with Crystal armor.

Current Ranged gear guidance specifically recommends the Bowfa + Crystal armor setup for:

  • Raids

  • Bossing

  • Inferno

Why Bowfa Is So Valuable

It provides:

  • High accuracy

  • Long range

  • No external ammunition when corrupted

  • Excellent general bossing performance

For many accounts, Bowfa represents one of the strongest major purchases or Ironman unlocks before a Twisted bow.

Dragon Hunter Crossbow

The Dragon hunter crossbow specializes in dragons.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Vorkath

  • Chambers of Xeric

  • Dragon enemies

Current Ranged progression guides continue to list it as a specialized bossing upgrade.

As with the Dragon hunter lance, do not buy it purely because it is expensive.

Buy it if you are actually farming dragon content.

Scorching Bow

The Scorching bow is a specialized Ranged weapon designed for demons.

Current Ranged weapon references note that it gains significant accuracy and damage against demonic targets.

For demon-heavy Slayer and PvM, this can make it much stronger than more generic alternatives.

Necklace of Anguish

The Necklace of anguish is the major offensive Ranged neck upgrade.

It requires 75 Hitpoints and provides both Ranged accuracy and Ranged Strength. Current equipment data places it among the strongest Ranged neck-slot options.

This makes it a much more meaningful upgrade than spending large amounts of GP purely on defensive Ranged armor.

Masori Armor

Masori is the premier high-end general Ranged armor set from Tombs of Amascut.

It requires 80 Ranged, while fortified Masori also requires 80 Defence.

Current Ranged armor guidance identifies Masori as offering the strongest Ranged attack and Ranged Strength bonuses among conventional Ranged armor sets.

Normal vs Fortified Masori

Fortification improves Defence.

The offensive bonuses remain the major reason to use the set.

If GP is limited, consider whether a stronger weapon would give you a larger improvement before investing heavily in armor.

Twisted Bow

The Twisted bow remains one of the defining endgame Ranged weapons.

Its power scales against enemies with high Magic stats, making it exceptionally strong against many high-level bosses.

Current Chambers of Xeric recommendations place it at the top of the Ranged hierarchy for many raid encounters.

Twisted Bow vs Bowfa

Twisted bow is not automatically better against every target.

Bowfa remains extremely accurate and performs consistently against many enemies.

Twisted bow shines when its target-scaling mechanic is favorable.

This is another example of why OSRS gear progression is content-specific.

Dizana's Quiver

Completing the Fortis Colosseum unlocks Dizana's quiver.

Even uncharged, it provides stronger Ranged offense than Ava's assembler. Charging it with Sunfire splinters increases the offensive bonuses applied to compatible arrows and bolts.

It represents one of the major endgame Ranged account upgrades.

Like the Infernal cape, it must be earned through difficult PvM rather than simply purchased.

Early Magic Gear Progression

Magic gear works differently from melee and Ranged.

Magic damage can be influenced heavily by:

  • Spell choice

  • Magic level

  • Weapon

  • Magic damage percentage

  • Elemental weakness

  • Enemy Magic Defence

Because of this, expensive robes are not automatically your first priority.

Mystic Robes

Mystic robes are a simple early Magic setup.

They require:

  • 40 Magic

  • 20 Defence for relevant pieces

Current Magic armor progression places Mystic among the basic member Magic sets before higher-level options.

They are adequate for:

  • Questing

  • Early Slayer

  • Basic PvM

  • Utility Magic

Iban's Staff

Iban's staff becomes extremely useful after Underground Pass.

Iban Blast is strong for its progression stage and works well for early bossing and quest combat.

Current Magic progression guidance specifically identifies the upgraded Iban's staff as useful for questing and bossing.

It is a major step before powered staves.

Warped Sceptre

The Warped sceptre provides a useful powered-staff alternative for developing accounts.

It is particularly valuable because powered staves can be used while remaining on spellbooks such as Lunar or Arceuus.

Current progression guidance places it before Trident-tier bossing weapons.

Trident of the Seas

The Trident of the seas represents one of the most important Magic PvM milestones.

Unlike ordinary combat spells, its built-in attack scales with Magic level.

Current Magic progression recommendations identify it specifically as a bossing weapon.

It makes Magic much easier to use in encounters requiring rapid movement or gear switching.

Trident of the Swamp

The Trident of the swamp upgrades Trident-tier Magic performance.

It offers stronger damage and can inflict venom.

Current Magic gear guidance places it firmly in late-game bossing and raiding progression.

For many players, it remains sufficient for learning raids before moving into much more expensive powered staves.

Ahrim's Robes

Ahrim's equipment remains one of the most practical late-mid-game Magic armor sets.

It requires:

  • 70 Magic

  • 70 Defence

Ahrim's provides strong Magic accuracy and useful Defence, although it degrades with combat use.

Because it is significantly cheaper than top-tier robes, it remains excellent value.

Blue Moon Armor

Blue Moon armor from Moons of Peril requires:

  • 75 Magic

  • 50 Defence

Each armor piece provides Magic damage alongside hybrid melee bonuses, and the full set has its own Frostweaver effect.

It provides another useful bridge between traditional mid-game robes and expensive endgame Magic equipment.

Ancient Magicks and Virtus

Magic progression is not limited to powered staves.

For multi-target Slayer and encounters where Ancient Magicks are important, your spellbook and Magic damage gear matter heavily.

Virtus robes are obtained from the Desert Treasure II bosses.

Each piece provides Magic damage, with an increased bonus when using Ancient Magicks combat spells.

That makes Virtus particularly valuable for:

  • Barrage Slayer

  • Ancient Magicks

  • Inferno-style scenarios

  • Content where powered staves are not the only Magic weapon

Occult Necklace

The Occult necklace is one of the most important Magic upgrades because it provides Magic damage in the neck slot.

Current equipment data lists it with a 5% Magic damage bonus.

Because damage percentage directly affects maximum Magic damage, the Occult can provide more practical value than an expensive robe upgrade.

Tormented Bracelet

The Tormented bracelet is the traditional high-end offensive Magic hand-slot upgrade.

It requires 75 Hitpoints and provides a 5% Magic damage bonus.

It is a high-value upgrade once your main Magic weapon is already established.

Confliction Gauntlets

The modern endgame upgrade from the Tormented bracelet is the Confliction gauntlets.

They are created using a Tormented bracelet, Mokhaiotl cloth, and Demon tears from Doom of Mokhaiotl progression.

They require 90 Hitpoints and currently provide stronger Magic attack and Magic damage than the Tormented bracelet, along with a passive effect for compatible one-handed Magic attacks.

This is firmly an endgame upgrade.

A developing player does not need to prioritize it.

Imbued God Cape

Mage Arena II allows players to obtain an imbued god cape.

Current Magic damage data gives imbued god capes a 2% Magic damage bonus.

Because the cape does not require an enormous GP investment, it is one of the better permanent Magic account upgrades.

Virtus vs Ancestral

Ancestral robes from Chambers of Xeric remain a premier Magic armor set.

They provide strong Magic accuracy and Magic damage.

Current Magic data shows:

  • Ancestral → 3% Magic damage per piece

  • Virtus → 2% normally, increased to 5% per piece while using Ancient Magicks combat spells

That means Ancestral is generally stronger for broad powered-staff use, while Virtus can outperform it for Ancient spellcasting.

There is no need to treat one as a universal replacement for the other.

Sanguinesti Staff

The Sanguinesti staff is a high-level powered Magic weapon from Theatre of Blood.

It offers strong damage and built-in healing potential.

Current Magic progression guidance places it above Trident-tier options for bossing and raiding.

It can be particularly useful where sustain matters.

Eye of Ayak

The Eye of Ayak is a newer powered staff obtained from deeper Doom of Mokhaiotl progression.

It requires 83 Magic.

Current equipment data places it between the Sanguinesti staff and Tumeken's shadow in overall powered-staff progression and notes that it attacks at an unusually fast three-tick rate.

It gives high-level Magic accounts another meaningful weapon choice instead of jumping directly from Sang to Shadow.

Tumeken's Shadow

Tumeken's shadow remains the defining endgame Magic weapon from Tombs of Amascut.

Its passive effect dramatically amplifies the Magic bonuses provided by worn equipment, which makes supporting gear particularly important when using it.

Why Shadow Changes Upgrade Priorities

Once you own a Shadow, Magic accuracy and Magic damage gear become much more valuable.

That can change the priority of:

  • Ancestral robes

  • Magus ring

  • Magic boots

  • High-end gloves

  • Other Magic bonus equipment

This is why a universal upgrade order does not work for every account.

Rings and Special Attack Gear

Some upgrades are useful across multiple combat styles or specific bossing strategies.

Lightbearer

Lightbearer from Tombs of Amascut accelerates special attack regeneration.

It becomes extremely useful in content where your strategy relies on weapons such as:

  • Dragon claws

  • Bandos godsword

  • Dragon warhammer

  • Zaryte crossbow

  • Healing special attacks

Current boss and raid gear recommendations frequently include Lightbearer as an alternative to pure-stat rings.

Defence-Reducing Weapons

High-level PvM often benefits from reducing enemy Defence.

Important tools include:

  • Dragon warhammer

  • Bandos godsword

  • Elder maul

These can increase the whole team's DPS at bosses with high Defence.

Do not evaluate a special attack weapon based only on its personal damage.

Its real value may come from improving every attack afterward.

Offensive Special Attack Weapons

Other weapons are used primarily for burst damage.

Examples include:

  • Dragon dagger

  • Burning claws

  • Dragon claws

  • Voidwaker

Current melee progression recommendations continue to include Burning claws, Dragon claws, and Voidwaker as specialized special-attack options.

These should usually come after your primary weapon and basic armor setup.

Boots and Why They Are Often Overrated

Boot upgrades are useful, but players frequently buy them too early.

Examples include:

  • Dragon boots

  • Primordial boots

  • Ranger boots

  • Pegasian boots

  • Infinity boots

  • Eternal boots

The improvement from expensive boots can be smaller than the benefit from upgrading a weapon, necklace, cape, or other major slot.

Avernic Treads

Avernic Treads are a modern endgame boot system from Doom of Mokhaiotl.

The base boots require 80 in Defence, Strength, Ranged, and Magic.

They can then be upgraded using Primordial, Pegasian, and Eternal boots plus Demon tears. Fully upgraded Avernic Treads (max) provide offensive bonuses for all three combat styles.

They are powerful but extremely late-game.

Do not sink a developing account's entire bank into boots.

Prayer Gear Still Matters

Not every useful upgrade increases max hits.

For Slayer, bursting, long boss trips, and some skilling-combat hybrids, Prayer bonus can reduce supply consumption substantially.

Examples include:

  • Proselyte armor

  • God blessings

  • Holy sandals and upgrades

  • Dragonbone necklace

  • Certain quest and diary rewards

If an activity already has low enemy Defence, extra accuracy may provide little value compared with Prayer conservation.

Slayer Helmet

The Slayer helmet is one of the most valuable combat items for any account training Slayer.

Once imbued, it supports melee, Ranged, and Magic bonuses against assigned monsters.

Current Magic damage guidance lists the imbued Slayer helmet's conditional damage boost against Slayer targets.

Rather than building three expensive general-purpose setups immediately, Slayer accounts can receive enormous value from improving their helmet and task selection.

Void and Elite Void

Void Knight equipment provides set bonuses rather than ordinary item-by-item stats.

Elite Void remains useful in several situations where:

  • Inventory space matters

  • Fast style switching matters

  • Set bonuses are valuable

  • Multiple combat styles are required

Ranged Void in particular provides a Ranged damage and accuracy multiplier.

It is not universally superior to specialized armor, but it remains a useful account unlock.

Do Not Ignore Defensive and Utility Gear

Maximum DPS is not always the correct setup.

Some encounters reward:

  • High Magic Defence

  • High melee Defence

  • Poison protection

  • Venom immunity

  • Dragonfire protection

  • Prayer bonus

  • Damage reduction

  • Special movement effects

Examples include:

  • Serpentine helm

  • Dragonfire shield or ward

  • Justiciar armor

  • Barrows tank equipment

  • Anti-dragon shields

  • Ring of suffering

A theoretically weaker setup that keeps you alive can produce more kills per trip.

Gear Progression for Raids

Raids require balanced setups.

Investing your entire bank into one combat style can leave the other two too weak.

Tombs of Amascut

A developing ToA setup can use equipment such as:

Melee

  • Fang or other good stab weapon

  • Dragon defender

  • Fighter torso or stronger armor

Ranged

  • Rune/Dragon crossbow or Bowfa

  • Blessed dragonhide or Crystal armor

  • Ava's device

Magic

  • Trident

  • Ahrim's or Blue Moon equipment

  • Occult necklace

Current ToA recommendations continue to offer progression from Warped sceptre and Trident options through Sanguinesti and Shadow, while also listing affordable armor alternatives below Virtus and Ancestral.

Chambers of Xeric

Chambers particularly rewards a broad setup.

Current recommendations progress from weapons such as:

  • Rune crossbow

  • Dragon crossbow

  • Bowfa

  • Dragon hunter crossbow

  • Twisted bow

depending on budget and encounter.

Theatre of Blood

Theatre of Blood melee progression currently includes:

  • Abyssal whip

  • Abyssal tentacle

  • Noxious halberd

  • Fang or Blade/Soulreaper options

  • Scythe of vitur

depending on encounter and role.

This demonstrates why one universal “best weapon” list is misleading.

Smart Upgrade Priorities for a Developing Account

Rather than buying armor simply because it is the next tier, prioritize high-impact unlocks.

Prioritize Permanent Account Unlocks

Examples include:

  • Barrows gloves

  • Dragon defender

  • Fighter torso

  • Fire cape

  • Ava's assembler

  • Imbued god cape

  • Slayer helmet

These provide enormous value without requiring hundreds of millions of GP.

Upgrade Your Main Weapons

Strong milestones include:

Melee

  • Dragon scimitar

  • Zombie axe

  • Abyssal whip

  • Fang / specialized weapons

Ranged

  • Magic shortbow (i)

  • Rune crossbow

  • Toxic blowpipe

  • Bowfa

Magic

  • Iban's staff

  • Warped sceptre

  • Trident

  • Trident of the swamp

Weapons usually change your PvM capability more noticeably than minor armor pieces.

Then Improve Offensive Accessories

High-value upgrades can include:

  • Amulet of fury

  • Amulet of torture

  • Necklace of anguish

  • Occult necklace

  • Tormented bracelet

  • Berserker ring (i)

  • Lightbearer

Afterward, move toward more expensive specialized jewelry.

Upgrade Armor When It Provides Real Value

Move into:

  • Barrows

  • Blood/Eclipse/Blue Moon equipment

  • Bandos

  • Crystal armor

  • Virtus

  • Masori

  • Ancestral

  • Torva

when those sets improve the activities you actually play.

Expensive Upgrades You Do Not Need Early

Several items are excellent but poor early investments.

Examples include:

  • Pegasian boots

  • Primordial boots when core weapons are still weak

  • Torva

  • Ancestral before a strong Magic weapon

  • High-end rings

  • Avernic defender before broader gear coverage

  • Avernic Treads

  • Megarare weapons

The problem is not that these items are weak.

The problem is opportunity cost.

Spending your entire bank on a small Strength or accuracy increase can prevent you from owning important Ranged and Magic gear.

When Should You Buy a Megarare?

The three iconic raid megarares represent extremely powerful but expensive upgrades:

  • Twisted bow

  • Scythe of vitur

  • Tumeken's shadow

Before purchasing one, consider whether you can still afford the equipment needed to support it.

Twisted Bow

Keep enough GP for:

  • Good arrows

  • Ranged armor

  • Necklace of anguish

  • Other combat styles

Scythe

Remember its operating cost and the need for strong melee support equipment.

Tumeken's Shadow

Its passive effect makes worn Magic bonuses extremely valuable, so owning Shadow while using extremely weak Magic equipment limits its potential.

A megarare rebuild can be effective, but only if you have profitable content available where that weapon excels.

Gear Progression for Ironman Accounts

Ironman gear progression is determined by obtainable upgrades rather than Grand Exchange prices.

Important milestones include:

  • Dragon scimitar from Monkey Madness I

  • Fighter torso

  • Barrows gloves

  • Dragon defender

  • Barrows equipment

  • Moons of Peril sets

  • Crystal equipment

  • Zulrah equipment

  • Zenyte jewellery

  • Raid upgrades

  • Slayer boss drops

Moons of Peril

Blood Moon, Blue Moon, and Eclipse gear give Ironmen access to useful combat sets without relying on extremely rare raid drops.

Corrupted Gauntlet

Corrupted Gauntlet remains one of the most important Ironman milestones because it provides:

  • Crystal armor seeds

  • Enhanced crystal weapon seed

  • Crystal shards

These unlock the Bowfa + Crystal armor setup.

Current Ranged progression guidance treats that setup as a major late-game PvM option.

Zulrah

Zulrah provides important upgrades such as:

  • Toxic blowpipe

  • Trident-related progression through Magic fang

  • Serpentine helm

This makes the boss an important bridge into higher PvM.

Common OSRS Gear Progression Mistakes

Buying Armor Before Weapons

A stronger weapon often provides much more DPS.

Do not spend tens of millions improving Defence while continuing to use a weak primary weapon.

Buying Gear Because It Looks Like the Next Tier

Dragon armor is the classic example.

Higher Defence requirements do not automatically mean better PvM performance.

Ignoring Attack Styles

Do not attack a Crush-weak boss with a Slash weapon simply because the Slash weapon costs more.

Check enemy weaknesses.

Ignoring Operating Costs

Some equipment uses:

  • Charges

  • Scales

  • Runes

  • Blood runes

  • Soul runes

  • Darts

  • Arrows

  • Crystal shards

  • Ether

A weapon may be affordable to purchase but expensive to operate.

Selling Your Entire Bank for Tiny Upgrades

Do not destroy your account's versatility for a minor DPS increase.

A strong balanced setup is usually more useful than one exceptional style and two unusable ones.

Copying Best-in-Slot Guides

Best-in-slot assumes:

  • Maximum stats

  • Huge budget

  • Correct encounter

  • Perfect mechanics

  • Specific team roles

That is not the same as best upgrade for your account.

Ignoring Untradeable Upgrades

Some of the best progression items cannot simply be bought.

Examples include:

  • Barrows gloves

  • Dragon defender

  • Fighter torso

  • Fire cape

  • Infernal cape

  • Ava's assembler progression

  • Dizana's quiver

These often provide better value than expensive Grand Exchange purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gear should I upgrade first in OSRS?

Usually prioritize your main weapon, followed by major permanent upgrades such as the Dragon defender, Barrows gloves, Fighter torso, Fire cape, Ava's devices, and useful offensive jewelry. Expensive armor generally comes later.

Is Fighter torso still worth getting?

Yes. It provides a valuable melee Strength bonus without requiring a large GP investment and remains useful until stronger armor becomes worthwhile. Current melee armor guidance still treats it as a strong alternative to more expensive body pieces.

Is Abyssal whip still good?

Yes. The Abyssal whip remains one of the strongest-value general Slash weapons for Slayer and melee combat at 70 Attack.

Should I buy Bandos or Fang first?

For many bossing-focused accounts, a major weapon such as Fang provides a larger practical improvement than replacing already adequate melee armor. The answer ultimately depends on the content you plan to fight.

Is Bowfa worth getting?

Yes. Bowfa with Crystal armor remains one of the most versatile late-game Ranged setups for bossing, raids, and Inferno progression before a Twisted bow.

Is Toxic blowpipe still useful?

Yes. It remains extremely effective against suitable lower-Defence targets and continues to appear throughout bossing and raid equipment recommendations.

Is Masori better than Crystal armor?

For general Ranged stats, Masori is stronger conventional Ranged armor. Crystal armor's major value comes from its interaction with the Bow of faerdhinen. The better setup therefore depends heavily on your weapon and target.

Is Virtus better than Ancestral?

Not universally. Ancestral provides stronger general Magic damage, while Virtus receives enhanced damage bonuses when using Ancient Magicks combat spells.

What comes after Trident of the Swamp?

High-end powered-staff progression can include Sanguinesti staff, Eye of Ayak, and eventually Tumeken's shadow, depending on budget and content.

What is the best melee necklace?

For general endgame melee offense, the Amulet of rancour currently surpasses the Amulet of torture in melee attack and Strength bonuses, but it is a much later and more expensive upgrade.

What are Avernic Treads?

Avernic Treads are high-end boots from Doom of Mokhaiotl progression. They can absorb the effects of Primordial, Pegasian, and Eternal boots using Demon tears, with the fully upgraded version providing offensive bonuses for all three combat styles.

Should I buy best-in-slot gear before learning raids?

No. Entry and intermediate raid setups work with far cheaper gear. Mechanical consistency, stats, Prayer usage, movement, and correct switches matter more than having every best-in-slot item.

Final Tips for OSRS Gear Progression

Good gear progression is about value, versatility, and the content you want to play.

Early accounts should focus on strong permanent unlocks such as Barrows gloves, the Dragon defender, Fighter torso, Ava's equipment, and combat capes.

Mid-game players benefit most from major weapon milestones:

  • Abyssal whip

  • Zombie axe

  • Toxic blowpipe

  • Rune or Dragon crossbows

  • Trident-tier Magic weapons

  • Moons of Peril equipment

Late-game progression becomes much more specialized.

Fang, Bowfa, Crystal armor, Masori, Virtus, Bandos, Torva, Soulreaper axe, Eye of Ayak, specialized demon and dragon weapons, and raid equipment all become valuable depending on what you fight.

At the endgame, equipment such as the Scythe of vitur, Twisted bow, Tumeken's shadow, Dizana's quiver, Amulet of rancour, Confliction gauntlets, and Avernic Treads can push an already developed account further.

But expensive does not automatically mean efficient.

The best OSRS upgrade is the one that lets you kill your target faster, survive more consistently, or unlock content that moves the rest of your account forward.
