Heroes of the Storm Ranked Guide – How Storm League Works
Storm League is where Heroes of the Storm becomes much more strategic than Quick Match.
Instead of choosing a Hero before entering matchmaking, both teams enter a draft where Heroes can be banned, compositions must be built, counters matter, and the Battleground is already known before selections are completed.
Climbing therefore requires more than being mechanically strong on one Hero.
Players who consistently gain rank normally combine several skills:
A reliable Hero pool
Strong drafting decisions
Experience and macro awareness
Objective understanding
Map-specific decision-making
Good positioning
Effective communication
The ability to recognize when not to fight
The ranked system currently runs through Storm League, which replaced the separate Hero League and Team League queues. Players need an account level of at least 50 and access to at least 16 Heroes to enter Storm League.

Heroes of the Storm Ranks Explained
Storm League uses seven main competitive ranks:
Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Diamond → Master → Grand Master
Bronze through Diamond are divided into five divisions.
Division 5 is the lowest division of a league, while Division 1 is the highest.
For example:
Gold 5 → Gold 4 → Gold 3 → Gold 2 → Gold 1 → Platinum 5
A Platinum 1 player is therefore much closer to Diamond than a Platinum 5 player.
Master works differently. Instead of numbered divisions, Master players accumulate Rank Points directly.
Grand Master represents the highest-ranked players in each region, with leaderboard position determined by Rank Points. The current live Grand Master leaderboards continue to use this system.
How Rank Points Work
After placement, every Storm League win or loss changes your Rank Points.
The important detail is that your visible rank is closely connected to your internal Storm League matchmaking rating, or MMR.
Rank Points were changed so that they map directly to Storm League MMR rather than operating as a mostly separate progression system.
Winning and Losing Rank Points
Winning increases your rating and Rank Points.
Losing decreases them.
The exact change can vary because the system considers the strength of the teams and your underlying rating.
If your MMR and displayed rank temporarily become misaligned, Rank Point changes can help move your visible rank toward the rating the system believes better represents your skill.
This is why two players do not necessarily gain exactly the same number of points from every match.
There Are No Promotion Matches
Older Heroes of the Storm guides may mention promotion and demotion games.
These are outdated.
Promotion and demotion matches were removed from Storm League. Players now move directly between divisions and leagues when their Rank Points cross the required threshold.
That means reaching the next division no longer requires a special additional match.
How Storm League Placement Matches Work
Storm League currently uses three placement matches.
After completing them, you receive your initial rank.
The system does not judge those three games in isolation. Returning players already have existing MMR information, meaning their previous ranked performance remains extremely important when determining where they are placed.
The three placement games mainly help update that estimate.
Placement matches were reduced from ten to three when Storm League's ranking system was updated to map Rank Points directly to MMR.
Do Placement Matches Decide Your Entire Rank?
No.
A common misconception is that winning all placement matches should automatically place someone dramatically higher.
Your previous MMR remains a major factor.
If the system already has substantial ranked data about you, three games cannot completely replace that information.
This also means a poor placement result does not permanently ruin your rank.
Once placement is finished, continued wins can move your rating upward.
How Storm League Drafting Works
Drafting is one of the biggest differences between Storm League and Quick Match.
Before the match begins, both teams can see the Battleground and then take turns banning and selecting Heroes.
Each Hero can only appear once in the draft.
You therefore need enough flexibility to handle bans, enemy picks, and teammates selecting Heroes before you.
How Many Heroes Are Banned?
Each team currently receives three Hero bans.
Two bans occur in the initial ban phase, with another ban occurring later in the draft.
The third ban was added to ranked draft modes to increase strategic depth and provide more opportunities to remove powerful or composition-breaking Heroes.
This is one reason entering ranked with only one comfortable Hero is risky.
Your main Hero may be banned.
The enemy may pick it.
Your team may need another role.
Or the Battleground may strongly favor a different type of Hero.
What Makes a Good Storm League Composition?
There is no composition that is correct for every Battleground, but a balanced draft normally has:
1 Tank
1 Offlaner
1 Ranged Assassin
1 Healer
1 Flex
The Flex position can be another Ranged Assassin, Bruiser, Melee Assassin, or sometimes another Healer depending on the draft. Current Storm League tier evaluations continue to use this general structure as the baseline for well-rounded teams.
Tank
The Tank controls space, creates engagements, protects teammates, and provides crowd control.
A team without a functional frontline can struggle to safely contest objectives or protect damage dealers.
Offlaner
The offlaner normally handles solo experience, waveclear, rotations, and additional frontline pressure.
Strong offlaners are valuable because they contribute both to the macro game and later teamfights.
Ranged Assassin
A dependable source of ranged damage is important for most compositions.
The exact Hero should depend on whether your team needs sustained damage, burst, poke, waveclear, structure pressure, or another specialized strength.
Healer
Healing becomes increasingly important in coordinated ranked fights.
The strongest Healer is not simply the one with the largest healing numbers. Cleanse effects, crowd control, mobility, defensive Heroics, and synergy can all determine which pick is correct.
Flex
The Flex slot allows the draft to adapt.
Your team might need additional damage, another frontline Hero, stronger crowd control, better waveclear, more camp clear, or a specific counter.
Strong Storm League players learn to identify what the composition is missing rather than automatically locking another Assassin.
How to Draft Better in Storm League
Many ranked games begin going wrong before the loading screen appears.
Drafting does not need to be complicated, but every pick should solve a problem.
Do Not Draft Only From Tier Lists
A top-tier Hero can still be a poor pick.
Consider:
The Battleground
Enemy crowd control
Enemy burst damage
Your team's waveclear
Your team's frontline
Objective type
Enemy mobility
Your own Hero experience
A slightly weaker Hero that fits the composition can be considerably more valuable than an S-tier Hero selected without any plan.
Avoid Showing Every Important Pick Early
Some Heroes are easy to counter.
If you reveal them immediately, the enemy gets several draft rounds to respond.
Safer, flexible Heroes are usually better early picks, while specialized Heroes are often better after more of the opposing composition is visible.
Look at What Your Team Is Missing
Before selecting your Hero, ask:
Who collects the offlane?
Who clears waves?
Who starts fights?
Who protects the backline?
Who deals reliable damage?
Who handles mercenary camps?
If nobody has an answer, your draft probably has a weakness.
Build a Small Ranked Hero Pool
One of the most reliable ways to improve is to stop trying to play the entire roster.
Mastering a smaller pool gives you much stronger matchup knowledge, talent understanding, positioning, and mechanical consistency.
Have More Than One Hero for Your Main Role
Ideally, know several Heroes well enough that one ban does not destroy your draft.
If you are primarily a Tank player, for example, becoming comfortable with three or four Tanks is much safer than relying exclusively on one.
The same applies to every role.
Learn at Least One Secondary Role
Ranked drafts will not always allow you to play your preferred position.
Having a secondary role prevents you from becoming the player who forces a bad composition because they refuse to adapt.
You do not need six Heroes in every role.
You need enough options to remain useful when the draft does not go your way.
Macro Play Is One of the Fastest Ways to Climb
A large percentage of lower-ranked games are lost through macro mistakes rather than spectacular mechanical errors.
Players constantly chase kills while leaving entire minion waves uncollected.
Because team experience is shared, that damages all five players.
Do Not Ignore Experience
Experience creates level advantages.
Level advantages create talent advantages.
Talent advantages create better fights.
It is one of the simplest chains in Heroes of the Storm.
If your team reaches an important talent tier before the enemy, especially Level 10 Heroics, you temporarily have a major advantage.
Conversely, fighting while down a talent tier is often unnecessary risk.
Watch Empty Lanes
If a minion wave is dying with nobody nearby to collect its experience, look at whether you can safely take it.
This does not mean abandoning every objective.
It means recognizing that unused lane experience is permanently lost.
Strong macro players constantly balance:
Experience → Objectives → Camps → Structures → Teamfights
rather than focusing exclusively on kills.
Learn When Not to Fight
This may be the most important Storm League climbing skill.
Many ranked players know how to engage.
Far fewer know when an engagement should never happen.
Avoid forcing fights when:
Your team is missing a player
The enemy has a talent advantage
Important Heroic abilities are unavailable
A teammate is too far away
The enemy controls the area
You have no vision
There is nothing meaningful to gain
The question should not be:
Can we fight?
It should be:
Why are we fighting?
If there is no good answer, the safer decision may provide more value.
Stop Chasing Low-Health Heroes
One of the most common ranked mistakes is turning a won fight into a bad fight by chasing.
An enemy escapes at low Health.
Several players follow.
They move away from the objective.
They enter enemy territory.
Then the enemy team respawns or rotates.
A simple kill attempt becomes a lost objective or multiple deaths.
After winning an engagement, immediately look for what can be converted into permanent value:
Fort
Keep
Boss
Objective
Mercenary camp
Experience
Core pressure
Kills are tools.
They are not the actual victory condition.
Use Mercenary Camps With a Purpose
Taking a camp because it is available is not the same as using camps correctly.
Mercenaries are strongest when their pressure forces the enemy to make an uncomfortable decision.
For example, a camp pushing one lane while an important objective appears elsewhere may force an opponent to leave the objective fight to defend.
That creates value even if the mercenaries never destroy a structure.
Avoid Bad Camp Timing
Do not disappear into a camp while your team is already entering an important fight.
Do not spend excessive time taking a difficult camp when opponents are missing from the map.
And do not automatically take every camp as soon as it becomes available.
Ask what the camp accomplishes.
If the answer is "nothing right now," it may be better to use your time elsewhere.
Play Around Talent Advantages
Storm League players should constantly compare team levels.
The most important breakpoints are talent tiers.
A small level difference can temporarily become a much larger combat difference if one team has unlocked a new talent row and the other has not.
Level 10 Is Especially Important
Level 10 unlocks Heroic abilities.
Fighting 9 versus 10 usually means one team has access to five Heroics while the other team has none.
That disadvantage can be enormous.
Unless the enemy gives you an unusually favorable opportunity, collecting enough experience to reach Level 10 is normally safer than forcing a major objective fight without Heroics.
The same principle applies to later talent tiers.
Understand the Battleground Before Drafting
Storm League shows the Battleground before the draft.
Use that information.
Different maps reward different strengths.
Some favor:
Global mobility
Strong offlaners
Objective damage
Area control
Camp clear
Waveclear
Sustained fighting
Siege pressure
Point control
The ranked map environment also continues to receive changes. Haunted Mines was added back to Ranked in the July 20, 2026 live patch, so players relying entirely on older map-pool knowledge may now be missing relevant draft preparation.
Map knowledge is part of ranked skill.
Communication Without Overloading the Team
You do not need constant typing to communicate effectively.
Simple pings are often enough.
Use them to indicate:
Retreat
Missing enemies
Objective movement
Camp intentions
Focus targets
Defending structures
Boss attempts
Lane coverage
Keep Draft Communication Simple
Useful draft communication might be:
"Can tank."
"Prefer offlane."
"Need waveclear."
"Can fill healer."
This gives teammates useful information without turning the draft into an argument.
Do Not Fight Your Own Team
Arguing during a match almost never improves the chances of winning.
Even when another player made an obvious mistake, spending the next several minutes criticizing them does not recover the lost experience, objective, or teamfight.
Focus on the next available decision.
Storm League rewards players who remain functional after something goes wrong.
How to Improve Your Positioning
Deaths are one of the most expensive mistakes in Heroes of the Storm because they affect more than your personal statistics.
While dead, you cannot:
Collect experience
Defend structures
Contest objectives
Take camps
Deal damage
Protect teammates
Ranged Heroes
Stay behind the frontline whenever possible.
Do not walk into dangerous range just to land one additional Basic Attack or ability.
Healers
Avoid dying while attempting to save teammates who are already beyond rescue.
One death becoming two usually makes the situation significantly worse.
Tanks
Do not confuse "being the Tank" with walking into five opponents alone.
Your teammates need to be close enough to follow your engage.
Offlaners
Respect missing enemies.
Winning a lane is meaningless if you repeatedly die to rotations.
How to Climb From Bronze and Silver
At lower ranks, consistency usually matters more than advanced mechanics.
The biggest advantages often come from simply doing basic things every match.
Focus heavily on:
Collecting experience
Avoiding unnecessary deaths
Playing a small Hero pool
Clearing waves
Reaching objectives on time
Not fighting while outnumbered
Converting won fights into structures
You do not need elaborate strategies to climb.
If you consistently generate more experience and die less often than the average player in your games, your team receives a major advantage.
How to Climb From Gold and Platinum
As players improve mechanically, drafting and decision-making become increasingly important.
At these ranks, work on:
Better map-specific drafts
Talent-tier awareness
Camp timing
Tracking enemy cooldowns
Punishing rotations
Coordinating engages
Improving target selection
Understanding when objectives can be traded
Players often reach this range because their Hero mechanics are reasonable.
Further progress frequently comes from improving the decisions surrounding those mechanics.
How to Climb Through Diamond and Master
At higher ranks, mistakes become easier to punish.
A slightly late rotation or poorly positioned damage dealer can decide an entire fight.
Players should become more comfortable with:
The current meta also differs between broad Storm League and Diamond-to-Grand-Master play. Current tier resources maintain separate rankings for these skill ranges because mechanically demanding Heroes gain considerable value when execution and team coordination improve.
Rank Decay in Storm League
Rank decay affects high-ranked players rather than the entire ladder.
Storm League's updated decay system applies to players around Diamond 5 and above after placement.
The system provides a grace period that can be extended by playing ranked games, up to a defined maximum.
This prevents high-ranked ladder positions from remaining completely static when players stop participating.
Bronze through Platinum players do not need to build their climbing strategy around rank decay.
Storm League Party Restrictions
Storm League supports group play, but rank restrictions exist to prevent extremely large skill gaps from distorting matchmaking.
The original Storm League rules prevent parties whose members are more than two leagues apart from queuing together, with special exceptions historically applying to full groups.
At Master and above, restrictions are tighter. High-ranked players may queue with no more than one other player, and both players must meet the high-rank requirements and remain within the permitted Rank Point range.
A proposed 2026 PTR change would have allowed placed players to party with unplaced players, but that line was removed from the July 20 live patch notes, so players should not assume the PTR rule became part of the live game.
Do Not Obsess Over Individual Match Results
Climbing is determined across many games.
Even excellent players lose matches.
Some games will contain:
Poor drafts
Disconnects
Bad matchups
Teammate mistakes
Your own mistakes
Unfortunate teamfights
The useful question after a loss is:
What could I personally have changed?
Maybe you missed too much experience.
Maybe you died before an objective.
Maybe your talent choice was poor.
Maybe you followed a bad call when you knew the fight was unfavorable.
Maybe you drafted a Hero that did not fit the map.
Those are things you can improve.
Complaining about matchmaking does not change your next decision.
Review Deaths Before Reviewing Damage
Players often look at the scoreboard and immediately compare Hero Damage.
That number can be misleading.
Large damage totals do not automatically mean strong play.
Someone can deal enormous poke damage that never results in a kill or objective advantage.
Deaths, positioning mistakes, missed experience, and failed conversions are often more useful to review.
After a match, ask:
Why did I die?
Was it necessary?
Was I too far forward?
Did I ignore missing enemies?
Did I fight down a talent tier?
Did I chase?
Did I fail to retreat?
Reducing repeatable deaths is one of the most reliable ways to improve ranked performance.
Common Storm League Mistakes
Several mistakes repeatedly slow down ranked climbing.
Playing Too Many Heroes
Constantly switching Heroes prevents deep matchup knowledge from developing.
Ignoring Waveclear
A composition with poor waveclear can fall behind without losing many fights.
Fighting Down Talent Tiers
This gives opponents unnecessary combat advantages.
Picking Only for Damage
Five-player compositions need more than damage numbers.
Crowd control, survivability, waveclear, frontline pressure, and utility matter.
Overcommitting After Winning a Fight
Take the objective or structure instead of chasing one survivor across the map.
Blaming the Draft After the Match Starts
Once the loading screen appears, the draft cannot be changed.
Play the composition you have.
Copying Builds Without Understanding Them
Recommended builds are useful, but talents can change value depending on enemy Heroes and the Battleground.
Storm League FAQ
What level do you need for Storm League?
Storm League requires an account level of at least 50 and access to at least 16 Heroes.
How many placement matches are there?
Storm League uses three placement matches before assigning your rank.
What are all Heroes of the Storm ranks?
The ranks are:
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, and Grand Master.
Bronze through Diamond use divisions, while Master uses accumulated Rank Points and Grand Master represents the highest-ranked leaderboard players.
Are there promotion matches?
No.
Promotion and demotion matches were removed. Players now transition directly between divisions and leagues through Rank Point changes.
Does Quick Match MMR affect Storm League rank?
Storm League uses its own ranked MMR.
Your ranked performance is what drives your Storm League position rather than your normal Quick Match record.
How many bans are there in Storm League?
Each team has three bans during the ranked draft.
Two occur early in the draft, followed by another ban later in the selection process.
What is the best role for climbing?
There is no universal best role.
Damage Heroes can directly secure kills, Tanks control engagements, Healers prevent losses, and offlaners can generate major experience and macro advantages.
The best climbing role is usually the one where you consistently create more value than players at your current rank.
Should I play meta Heroes to climb?
Meta Heroes help, but Hero mastery matters more than small tier differences.
It is usually better to play a strong Hero you understand deeply than switch constantly between S-tier Heroes you barely know.
Can you climb with a negative win rate?
Long-term climbing requires winning enough games for your rating to trend upward.
Short stretches can look unusual because Rank Points, penalties, MMR alignment, and placement effects may influence visible changes, but consistent positive results are ultimately what drive rank progression.
Is Grand Master still active?
Yes.
Current 2026 official leaderboards continue to track Grand Master players and Rank Points across regions, confirming that the top-level Storm League ladder remains active.
Final Thoughts
Climbing Storm League is not about finding one trick that guarantees rank gains.
The players who improve most consistently become better at the decisions that happen in every match.
Build a focused Hero pool.
Understand your role.
Draft for the Battleground and composition.
Collect experience.
Respect talent disadvantages.
Use camps deliberately.
Stop chasing unnecessary kills.
Turn won fights into structures and objectives.
Most importantly, review the decisions you can control.
Heroes of the Storm is heavily team-focused, so no player controls every match. But better drafting, positioning, macro play, Hero mastery, and decision-making increase the number of games where your actions create a real advantage.
That is what turns improvement into a climb.
