WoW Forever Classes Guide: Every Class, Role and Major Change Explained
WoW Forever keeps the nine iconic Classic classes but significantly changes how some of them function. New race/class combinations, redesigned talents, stronger hybrid support, updated stats, new abilities, and revised itemization aim to make more playstyles viable without making every class feel the same. This guide explains every WoW Forever class, its roles, and the major confirmed changes.
How Classes Work in WoW Forever
WoW Forever is not attempting to convert Classic classes into simplified versions of their Retail equivalents.
Blizzard's stated goal is almost the opposite.
Classes should retain clear strengths, clear weaknesses, meaningful utility, and distinctive identities. Developers want to fix obvious gaps and underdeveloped playstyles without giving every class an interrupt, defensive cooldown, movement ability, crowd-control tool, and group buff that performs essentially the same function.
That philosophy is especially important when choosing your first character.
A Warrior is not meant to solve the same problems as a Mage.
A Rogue is not meant to provide the same utility as a Shaman.
A Paladin can gain stronger tanking tools without becoming functionally identical to a Warrior.
Blizzard describes the goal as preserving meaningful trade-offs: your class should sometimes feel exceptionally useful, and sometimes another class should possess exactly the tool your group wishes it had.

WoW Forever Class Roles at a Glance
WoW Forever retains the familiar nine-class structure of original WoW:
Warrior — Tank, Melee DPS
Paladin — Tank, Healer, Melee DPS
Hunter — Ranged DPS
Rogue — Melee DPS
Priest — Healer, Ranged DPS
Shaman — Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS
Mage — Ranged DPS
Warlock — Ranged DPS
Druid — Tank, Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS
Forever's changes are particularly important for hybrid classes such as Paladin, Shaman, and Druid because Blizzard is adjusting stats, talents, abilities, and equipment so those different roles can function more naturally without eliminating the differences between them.
Class Design Is More Classic Than Retail
Combat remains deliberately closer to Classic WoW.
Blizzard says an ordinary solo enemy should generally survive long enough for individual abilities, positioning, resources, and mistakes to matter rather than disappearing immediately.
Dungeon combat follows the same philosophy.
Crowd control such as Polymorph, Banish, Fear, and Root remains relevant when tanks cannot safely control an entire enemy pack. Damage dealers are expected to manage threat and focus targets instead of automatically opening every pull with maximum area damage.
This makes your complete class toolkit important.
Your damage meter is only one part of your contribution.
Interrupting, controlling enemies, buffing allies, dispelling effects, generating threat, protecting party members, conserving mana, or simply preventing a dangerous enemy from acting can matter just as much.
Talent Trees Are Being Reworked
WoW Forever keeps recognizable Classic-style talent trees rather than replacing them with modern Retail talent systems.
The familiar milestone structure remains, including important one-point talents around the traditional 11-, 21-, and 31-point positions.
Forever adds another 16-point milestone, giving talent trees another opportunity for a significant choice rather than relying heavily on incremental bonuses such as small percentage increases.
Some original patch 1.12 talents remain unchanged.
Others are being improved or redesigned.
Blizzard is particularly moving away from uninteresting talents that simply provide tiny statistical increases when a more noticeable effect could occupy that position instead.
Another major change is that certain iconic class buffs previously locked behind talents become baseline abilities.
Confirmed examples include:
Divine Spirit for Priests
Blessing of Kings for Paladins
Improved Mark of the Wild effects for Druids
That gives players access to defining class utility without requiring one specific talent allocation merely because the group expects the buff.
Hybrid Classes Benefit From Major Stat Changes
Forever is changing several Classic stats in ways that directly help hybrid characters.
Separate spell, melee, and ranged Hit are being combined.
Separate spell, melee, and ranged Critical Strike are also being unified.
This matters significantly for classes whose abilities combine physical attacks with magic.
Blizzard specifically identifies Retribution Paladins and Enhancement Shamans as beneficiaries.
Instead of equipment improving one part of their toolkit while leaving another behind, a single stat can support a broader range of attacks.
The change also helps other classes in less obvious ways.
Warriors can benefit when improving the reliability of Taunt.
Rogues gain additional value for Poisons.
Hunters can benefit when using Traps.
The objective is not to turn all stats into generic power. It is to remove awkward barriers that made some hybrid builds unnecessarily difficult to gear.
Healing Gear Is More Useful Outside Groups
Another important itemization change affects healers.
Bonus Healing now also provides one-third of its value as Bonus Damage.
That means a Priest, Paladin, Shaman, or Druid should not feel quite as punished while questing simply because their equipment is optimized for healing.
Dedicated healing equipment can still remain healing-focused, but players receive some offensive benefit when they return to the open world.
This is particularly useful in Forever because leveling, professions, exploration, reputations, quests, and outdoor gameplay remain important instead of becoming irrelevant once a player reaches maximum level.
Caster Weapons Matter More
Classic physical classes often become excited when they obtain a new weapon because weapon damage directly affects their performance.
Caster weapon progression historically could feel considerably less dramatic.
Forever is addressing that by putting Spell Damage and Healing directly onto more caster-oriented weapons.
Mages, Priests, Warlocks, Druids, Shamans, and Paladins therefore have more reason to care about weapon upgrades while leveling.
This is part of Blizzard's broader attempt to "unsolve" itemization and make equipment choices more interesting across every role.
Warrior
Roles
Warriors primarily cover:
Tanking
Melee DPS
They remain the archetypal weapon-based martial class, using different weapons, Rage, armor, stances, and defensive tools to adapt to different encounters.
What Makes Warriors Different
Warriors reward strong understanding of combat fundamentals.
Equipment matters.
Weapon upgrades matter.
Positioning matters.
Threat matters when tanking.
Their toolkit also naturally encourages players to understand when to commit aggressively and when an encounter requires defensive play.
For players who enjoy being directly involved in the physical side of combat, Warrior remains one of Forever's clearest class fantasies.
Major Confirmed WoW Forever Changes
Blizzard has not yet published a Warrior talent breakdown comparable to the Paladin Deep Dive.
However, Warriors are affected by several confirmed universal changes.
Unified Hit can improve the reliability of abilities such as Taunt alongside normal attacks, while redesigned dungeon equipment and stronger weapon progression should provide more varied gearing decisions.
Skyborne characters can also choose Warrior regardless of whether they join the Horde or Alliance.
The broader class philosophy also suggests Warrior weaknesses will remain meaningful rather than every missing utility tool simply being added to the class.
Specific new Warrior abilities or redesigned talents should not be treated as confirmed until Blizzard publishes them.
Paladin
Roles
Paladins can fill all three major group roles:
Tank
Healer
Melee DPS
Paladin is currently the class Blizzard has explained in the greatest detail, making it the clearest example of how Forever plans to improve weak Classic builds without removing class identity.
Paladins Become Available to the Horde
One of Forever's biggest class changes is the arrival of the Undead Paladin.
That means Paladins are no longer restricted entirely to the Alliance in the way players associate with original Vanilla WoW.
This also fundamentally changes group-building possibilities for Horde players.
Holy Strike
Paladins gain Holy Strike early in their leveling journey.
It is an instant weapon attack dealing Holy damage and provides a new core offensive button rather than leaving low-level Paladin combat almost entirely dependent on auto attacks and Judgment interactions.
Seals Are No Longer Consumed by Judgment
This is one of the most important quality-of-life improvements to the Paladin core loop.
Casting Judgment no longer consumes the active Seal.
That removes much of the repetitive Seal recasting associated with older Paladin gameplay while preserving the Seal-and-Judgment identity itself.
Consecration Becomes Baseline
Consecration becomes a baseline Paladin ability rather than requiring a particular talent investment.
Blizzard has also adjusted how its damage and threat work, allowing it to function as a stronger tanking and damage tool against priority enemies without simply becoming unlimited high-threat AoE.
Protection Paladin
Protection receives one of the most meaningful redesigns.
Seal of Fury serves as the tank-focused Seal.
It favors fast weapons, can create small absorption shields, and causes Judgment to function as a taunt while the Seal is active.
Protection also receives tools supporting:
Mana recovery
Blocking
Taunt reliability
Damage mitigation
Absorption
Tank-oriented Holy Strike gameplay
For example, Swift Judgment can reset Judgment, offering another opportunity if an important taunt fails.
Templar's Bulwark provides a substantial defensive absorb based on maximum health, while Iron Creed rewards well-timed Holy Strikes with temporary damage reduction.
These changes are designed to make Protection Paladin a legitimate tank without simply copying Warrior mechanics.
Holy Paladin
Holy receives additional interaction between its healing spells instead of relying too heavily on repeatedly casting one efficient heal.
Infusion of Light rewards critical heals from Holy Shock and Flash of Light by reducing the cast time of Holy Light.
Holy Shock receives additional support, while talents such as Reverence improve mana regeneration through Spirit.
Light's Vigil provides another major cooldown that can produce either offensive or group-healing effects depending on how it is used.
The overall goal is a more varied healer while maintaining the durable support identity associated with Paladins.
Retribution Paladin
Retribution receives substantial support for actual melee DPS gameplay.
Confirmed talents include effects such as:
Vindication, affecting enemy Attack Power while improving the Paladin
Sacred Arbiter, enhancing Holy Strike and interacting with Judgments
Champion of the Light, supporting spell-oriented Holy damage
Instrument of the Law, modifying Holy Wrath and threat
Twist of Light, supporting Seal Twisting
Twist of Light is particularly interesting because Blizzard wants to preserve Seal Twisting as a recognizable Paladin mechanic without requiring players to rely on external swing-timer addons to perform it comfortably.
Paladin Weaknesses Still Matter
Despite receiving many improvements, Paladins are deliberately not gaining every missing tool.
Blizzard specifically says Paladins still lack a traditional interrupt and do not gain the same slowing capabilities available to some other classes.
Their taunt remains tied into Seal and Judgment gameplay rather than becoming a completely separate generic tank button.
Paladins also retain particular strength against Undead and Demons through abilities such as Exorcism, Holy Wrath, and Turn Undead.
That is exactly what Blizzard means by protecting class identity.
A better Paladin does not need to become a Warrior wearing different armor.
Hunter
Role
Hunters primarily provide:
Ranged physical DPS
They combine ranged weapons with pets, Traps, tracking, kiting, and strong outdoor-world utility.
Human Hunters Are New
Forever adds Human Hunter as one of its confirmed new race/class combinations.
Skyborne can also become Hunters on either faction.
Traps Benefit From Stat Changes
Blizzard specifically mentions Hunters when discussing unified Hit.
Improving Hit can now help more of a Hunter's toolkit, including Traps, rather than physical attacks and secondary mechanics being separated by awkward stat requirements.
That should make Hunter gearing more coherent without removing the distinctive mechanics surrounding ranged weapons and pets.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Blizzard has not yet published a complete Hunter talent and ability redesign.
Any claims about new pet systems, specific talent replacements, rotations, ammunition changes, or major specialization reworks should therefore be treated as unconfirmed until Blizzard provides Hunter-specific information.
Rogue
Role
Rogues specialize in:
Melee DPS
Their identity revolves around stealth, control, positioning, burst windows, poisons, and deciding when and how to engage.
Poisons Benefit From Unified Stats
Rogues are another class Blizzard explicitly mentions when explaining Forever's new Hit design.
Unified Hit improves not only weapon attacks but also the reliability of Poisons, allowing equipment to support more of the Rogue's complete toolkit.
That fits Forever's goal of making an item feel valuable to the class rather than requiring separate stats for interconnected mechanics.
Crowd Control Remains Valuable
Forever's more tactical dungeon philosophy should also keep abilities involving control, disruption, and careful target selection meaningful.
Blizzard wants dungeon packs to create situations where controlling enemies can be preferable to simply pulling everything together and using AoE damage.
This environment naturally favors classes such as Rogue that can contribute more than raw DPS.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
No full Rogue talent overhaul has been published.
Specific assumptions based on Season of Discovery, Retail WoW, or other Classic versions should not automatically be applied to Forever.
Priest
Roles
Priests primarily offer:
Healing
Ranged spell DPS
Priest remains one of the game's strongest examples of a class that can dedicate itself to supporting allies or lean into Shadow magic for offensive play.
Gnome Priests Are New
Forever introduces Gnome Priest as a new playable race/class combination.
This gives Alliance players another racial option for the class while contributing to Blizzard's broader expansion of traditional race/class restrictions.
Divine Spirit Becomes Baseline
One of the few class-specific Priest changes already confirmed is that Divine Spirit is moving out of talent dependency and becoming baseline class utility.
That prevents Priests from feeling pressured into one talent choice simply because their party or raid expects a signature buff.
Healing Gear Now Helps Damage
Priests also benefit considerably from the revised Bonus Healing rule.
Because Bonus Healing contributes one-third of its value as Bonus Damage, healing-focused Priests should be better equipped for questing and solo combat without carrying an entirely separate damage set for every outdoor activity.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Detailed changes to Holy, Discipline-style talent choices, Shadow gameplay, mana management, or Priest-specific offensive abilities have not yet been fully outlined.
Shaman
Roles
Shamans can cover:
Melee DPS
Ranged spell DPS
Healing
Their identity combines elemental magic, weapon combat, healing, and Totem-based utility.
Alliance Can Play Shaman
Forever adds Dwarf Shaman, one of the most significant race/class additions announced so far.
Horde-aligned Skyborne can also become Shamans.
The addition of Dwarf Shaman means the class is no longer effectively locked to the Horde as it was in original Vanilla WoW.
Enhancement Benefits From Hybrid Stat Changes
Blizzard specifically identifies Enhancement Shaman as one of the builds helped by combined melee/spell Hit and Crit.
Enhancement naturally mixes weapon attacks with magical effects.
Separating spell and melee accuracy created awkward gearing situations in older designs. Unified stats let one piece of equipment improve more of the playstyle at once.
This is an important example of Forever strengthening a hybrid build without completely redesigning what that build represents.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Detailed changes to Totems, Elemental talents, Enhancement rotations, Restoration healing, and individual Shaman abilities have not yet received the same official breakdown as Paladins.
Mage
Role
Mages specialize in:
Ranged spell DPS
They combine powerful magic with control, utility, mobility, and strong tools for manipulating enemy movement.
Orc Mages Are New
Forever officially introduces Orc Mage as a new race/class combination.
Alliance-aligned Skyborne can also become Mages.
Polymorph Matters Again
Blizzard specifically uses Polymorph when explaining Forever dungeon design.
When a tank cannot safely control an entire pack, turning one dangerous enemy into a harmless target can be the correct solution.
That reinforces the idea that Mage gameplay should not be reduced to maximizing damage.
A Mage who understands control can change how safely a group handles a difficult pull.
Caster Weapon Progression Improves
Because spellcaster weapons can now carry meaningful Spell Damage and Healing, obtaining a new staff, sword, or other appropriate weapon should feel more like an actual progression moment for a Mage rather than primarily a stat-stick replacement.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
No full Arcane, Fire, or Frost talent redesign has been officially detailed.
Forever should therefore not be assumed to use Retail rotations or Season of Discovery Rune mechanics unless Blizzard confirms individual features.
Warlock
Role
Warlocks provide:
Ranged spell DPS
Their gameplay traditionally revolves around demons, curses, damage-over-time effects, resource management, summoning, and unusual group utility.
Troll Warlocks Are New
Forever adds Troll Warlock to the available race/class combinations.
That expands Horde character choice while preserving the broader fantasy of Warlock as a dangerous practitioner of dark magic.
Banish and Fear Remain Important
Blizzard specifically highlights both Banish and Fear as examples of crowd-control tools that remain relevant in Forever dungeon gameplay.
That makes Warlock utility potentially valuable when groups face dangerous compositions that cannot safely be tanked all at once.
Understanding when to control an enemy—and how to prevent that control from creating an even larger problem—remains part of skilled Warlock play.
Caster Itemization Helps Warlocks
Warlocks also benefit from redesigned caster weapons and broader itemization improvements, giving spellcasters more meaningful reasons to care about weapons obtained while leveling or running dungeons.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Blizzard has not yet revealed a complete Warlock talent rework or final changes to demons, Soul Shards, curses, or individual offensive abilities.
Druid
Roles
Druids are Forever's most flexible class and can potentially cover:
Tanking
Healing
Melee DPS
Ranged spell DPS
Shapeshifting allows one class to approach completely different roles depending on talents and equipment.
Skyborne Druids Are New
Both Alliance and Horde Skyborne can become Druids.
Blizzard has also created unique Skyborne Druid forms specifically for the new race.
This is one of the most visually significant class additions announced so far.
Mark of the Wild Utility Becomes Easier to Access
Blizzard has confirmed that effects previously tied to talents such as Improved Mark of the Wild are being moved into baseline class functionality.
That allows Druids to provide defining class utility without sacrificing talent freedom merely to satisfy group expectations.
Healing Itemization Helps Solo Play
Restoration-oriented Druids benefit from the new relationship between Bonus Healing and Bonus Damage.
Healing equipment therefore provides some offensive value when the player leaves a dungeon or raid and returns to questing.
What Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Blizzard has not yet revealed complete Forever talent trees for Feral, Balance, Restoration, or tank-focused Druid gameplay.
The existence of Skyborne forms is confirmed, but players should not assume additional forms, Retail mechanics, or Season of Discovery abilities without official confirmation.
New Race and Class Combinations
Forever currently has six specifically announced additions to the traditional race/class structure:
Gnome Priest
Human Hunter
Dwarf Shaman
Orc Mage
Troll Warlock
Undead Paladin
Blizzard has also stated that additional combinations may be introduced later.
The new Skyborne race adds another set of options.
Both factions can create Skyborne:
Warriors
Hunters
Rogues
Druids
Horde Skyborne additionally gain:
Shaman
Alliance Skyborne additionally gain:
Mage
The faction-specific Shaman/Mage distinction reflects the different cultural paths available to Skyborne characters.
Racials Matter More Without Becoming Mandatory
Race choice is also being updated alongside classes.
Forever gives each established race a redesigned racial package built around two active and two passive abilities, with Blizzard aiming for roughly comparable offensive value while still allowing each race to possess distinctive utility.
Dwarves provide one example.
Stoneform continues removing and protecting against Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases but now provides direct Physical damage reduction instead of an Armor increase.
Other Dwarf effects support mace usage, Beast encounters, and tracking.
Undead racial changes include updates to Will of the Forsaken and Cannibalize, with Cannibalize restoring Mana as well as Health so it becomes more useful to mana-based Undead classes—including the new Undead Paladin. Undead also gain Touch of the Grave, providing an offensive life-draining effect.
The important design principle is that race should influence your character without one race automatically being mathematically mandatory for every class.
Which WoW Forever Class Should You Choose?
The best class depends on what you want your character to do.
If You Want to Tank
Consider:
Warrior
Paladin
Druid
Warrior provides the traditional martial tank experience.
Paladin uses Holy magic, Seals, Judgment, absorbs, and AoE threat.
Druid offers shapeshifting and the ability to switch between dramatically different playstyles.
If You Want to Heal
Consider:
Priest
Paladin
Shaman
Druid
Priest offers the classic dedicated healer fantasy.
Paladin combines durable support with Holy magic.
Shaman mixes healing with elemental and Totem utility.
Druid brings healing alongside the broadest collection of alternative roles.
If You Want Melee DPS
Consider:
Warrior
Rogue
Paladin
Shaman
Druid
Rogue focuses heavily on stealth and control.
Warrior emphasizes weapons and physical combat.
Retribution Paladin mixes weapon strikes with Holy damage.
Enhancement Shaman combines weapon attacks with elemental magic.
Druid can use shapeshifting for melee combat.
If You Want Ranged DPS
Consider:
Hunter
Mage
Warlock
Priest
Shaman
Druid
Hunter is the major physical ranged option.
Mage focuses on direct magical damage and control.
Warlock combines demons, curses, and darker spellcasting.
Priest can pursue Shadow-oriented damage.
Shaman offers elemental ranged combat.
Druid can pursue a spellcasting path while retaining access to shapeshifting and other roles.
Do Not Choose a Class Only From a Tier List
WoW Forever's class philosophy makes early tier lists particularly risky.
Class tuning can change.
Talent numbers can change.
Items are being redesigned.
New equipment can alter previously understood builds.
Hybrid stats are changing.
New race/class combinations affect available choices.
And Blizzard is deliberately attempting to make the game less "solved" than original Classic.
More importantly, Forever intentionally allows classes to possess different strengths.
A class being weaker in one encounter does not automatically mean it is worse everywhere.
One dungeon may reward crowd control.
Another encounter may favor sustained melee damage.
A raid boss may make a particular defensive utility extremely valuable.
PvP creates completely different priorities.
Outdoor leveling rewards still another collection of strengths.
The question should therefore be less:
"Which class is number one?"
And more:
"Which class has strengths, weaknesses, and gameplay that I actually want to manage?"
The Biggest Class Change Is the Design Philosophy
Individual talents and abilities will naturally attract most of the attention, but Forever's most important class change may be philosophical.
Blizzard is trying to improve weaker builds without removing friction from class design.
Protection Paladins are receiving proper tanking tools, but Paladins still do not gain every Warrior ability.
Hybrid classes gain cleaner Hit and Crit scaling, but they remain hybrids.
Healers gain better solo itemization without becoming dedicated DPS characters simply because they equip healing gear.
Crowd control remains useful.
Threat remains relevant.
Group buffs remain valuable.
Different classes continue solving different problems.
That is a significant departure from designing every class around the expectation that it must independently possess an equivalent answer to every encounter mechanic.
Forever wants players to notice which classes are standing beside them.
What Class Changes Are Still Unknown?
Players should be careful with class guides produced before Blizzard finishes publishing its class information.
At this stage, Blizzard has fully explained its overall philosophy and provided extensive examples through Paladin, racials, talents, itemization, and combat systems. It has not yet provided comparable final ability-by-ability breakdowns for Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock, and Druid.
That means exact answers about:
Final talent builds
Best specializations
Best DPS
Best tank
Best healer
Final rotations
Final talent point allocation
Final PvP metas
Final Best-in-Slot gear
Exact class balance
would currently involve substantial guesswork.
As more class information becomes available, the details can change.
The confirmed direction, however, is already clear: Classic class identity stays, weaker paths receive attention, hybrid gearing improves, talents become more meaningful, and classes are allowed to remain different from one another.
WoW Forever Classes FAQ
How many classes are in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever begins with the nine core classes associated with original World of Warcraft: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock, and Druid. Blizzard has also indicated that completely new classes are not necessarily impossible in Forever's long-term future, but none should be treated as confirmed until officially announced.
Are Paladins still Alliance-only in WoW Forever?
No. Forever introduces Undead Paladins, giving Horde players access to the class.
Are Shamans still Horde-only?
No. Dwarf Shaman is a confirmed Forever race/class combination, giving Alliance players access to Shaman. Horde Skyborne can also become Shamans.
Does WoW Forever use Classic talent trees?
Yes, Forever retains Classic-style talent-tree structure while redesigning individual talents, adding a new 16-point milestone, and improving or replacing less meaningful choices.
Will hybrid classes be better in WoW Forever?
Blizzard is making several changes specifically intended to improve hybrid gameplay, including unified melee/spell/ranged Hit and Crit and better itemization. Retribution Paladin and Enhancement Shaman are explicitly cited as examples that benefit from these changes.
Which class changed the most?
Paladin currently has the largest publicly documented class rework. Protection, Holy, and Retribution all receive meaningful additions, while core mechanics such as Seals, Judgment, Consecration, and Holy Strike are being revised. That does not necessarily mean Paladin will ultimately receive more changes than every other class; Blizzard simply has not yet published equally detailed previews for the others.
What is the best class in WoW Forever?
There is no confirmed best class. Final balance, talents, equipment, encounter design, and tuning are not sufficiently settled to make reliable overall rankings. Forever is also intentionally designed around classes having different strengths and weaknesses rather than every class performing identically in every situation.
Which classes can tank?
Warrior, Paladin, and Druid provide the primary tank paths within the nine-class structure.
Which classes can heal?
Priest, Paladin, Shaman, and Druid provide healing roles.
Which classes are best for ranged combat?
Hunter specializes in physical ranged combat, while Mage, Warlock, Priest, Shaman, and Druid can provide different forms of ranged spell damage depending on their build.
Does WoW Forever have new race/class combinations?
Yes. Confirmed additions include Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. Skyborne also provide their own faction-dependent class selection.
