How Gear Progression Works

Before level 40, your priority should usually be replacing equipment as you level rather than perfecting individual pieces.

At level 40, that changes.

Your items no longer become obsolete simply because you gained another character level. Instead, progression becomes about improving:

  • attribute combinations;

  • attribute values;

  • talents;

  • Brand bonuses;

  • Gear Set bonuses;

  • weapon compatibility;

  • Exotic and Named item synergy;

  • Expertise;

  • eventually Prototype Gear.

Gear Score Is No Longer Relevant

Modern Division 2 characters do not progress through Gear Score.

World Tiers were removed, Gear Score references were removed from the game, and item quality was redistributed across a single level 1–40 progression scale.

If an older guide tells you to reach Gear Score 500 or World Tier 5 before building your character, it is outdated.

Understanding Gear Quality

Different item colors indicate different equipment categories, but rarity alone does not determine whether something belongs in your build.

High-End Gear

High-End gear provides the greatest flexibility for conventional buildcrafting.

It can offer:

  • Brand Set bonuses;

  • Core Attributes;

  • secondary attributes;

  • chest or backpack talents;

  • gear mod slots where applicable.

A well-rolled High-End piece with the correct Brand, attributes, and talent can remain part of an endgame build for a very long time.

Gear Sets

Gear Sets sacrifice some normal attribute flexibility in exchange for powerful set mechanics.

Most Gear Sets provide bonuses as you equip multiple pieces, with the defining mechanic normally unlocked at four pieces.

Chest and backpack pieces can further modify the Gear Set's unique mechanic.

This means you usually do not need five or six pieces simply because they belong to the same set.

Named Items

Named gear and weapons are special versions of existing equipment.

They may feature:

  • Perfect versions of normal talents;

  • special attributes;

  • unusual combinations unavailable on ordinary drops.

Named does not mean automatically best-in-slot.

A Named item becomes valuable when its unique property strengthens your specific build.

Red Horizon continues this philosophy. Rather than constantly adding entirely new Brand Sets, the developers are now using additional Named pieces with Perfect Talents or Attributes to expand existing Brands.

Exotic Gear and Weapons

Exotics contain unique talents or mechanics that can change how a build plays.

Examples can revolve around:

  • weapon swapping;

  • headshots;

  • status effects;

  • armor;

  • skills;

  • team support;

  • specialized damage conditions.

Exotics should be treated as build-defining tools, not simply higher-rarity replacements.

A correctly rolled High-End piece can be better than an Exotic whose talent does nothing for your playstyle.

Prototype Gear

Prototype is a newer endgame rarity positioned above ordinary High-End, Named, and Gear Set gear.

Prototype items provide stronger attribute ranges and special Augments that add another effect to the item. Existing eligible level-40 gear can also be converted into Prototype equipment under the appropriate endgame requirements.

Prototype gear is designed for advanced min-maxing rather than as the first destination for a freshly level-40 Agent.

The Six Armor Slots

Your standard equipment loadout contains six armor slots:

  • Mask

  • Chest

  • Holster

  • Backpack

  • Gloves

  • Kneepads

Each contributes to your build through its Core Attribute, secondary attributes, Brand or Gear Set bonuses, and other properties.

Chest Pieces

Chest pieces are particularly important because High-End chest armor can roll powerful build-defining talents.

Gear Set chests usually modify or strengthen the four-piece mechanic of their set.

An excellent chest piece can therefore influence your entire combat loop.

Backpacks

Backpacks serve a similar role.

High-End backpacks contain talents, while Gear Set backpacks typically improve the set's main mechanic.

When designing a Gear Set build, one of the most important decisions is whether the Gear Set chest or backpack is strong enough to justify giving up a High-End, Named, or Exotic alternative.

Core Attributes Explained

The modern gear system is built around three major Core Attribute colors.

They immediately tell you the general direction of an item.

Red Core – Weapon Damage

Red cores increase weapon-focused offensive power.

They are common in:

  • Assault Rifle builds;

  • SMG builds;

  • LMG builds;

  • rifle builds;

  • Marksman Rifle setups;

  • general DPS builds.

A weapon-heavy build will normally use several Red cores.

Blue Core – Armor

Blue cores increase Armor.

They support:

  • tank builds;

  • shield builds;

  • aggressive solo setups;

  • defensive hybrids;

  • builds where survival matters more than maximum DPS.

More Armor does not automatically make a build better.

If you add so many Blue cores that enemies take excessively long to kill, you have exchanged too much offensive power for defense.

Yellow Core – Skill Tier

Yellow cores provide Skill Tier.

Skill Tier improves skills through defined tiers and standard gear investment reaches Skill Tier 6.

Yellow cores are central to:

  • Skill Damage builds;

  • healer builds;

  • crowd-control builds;

  • Status Effect setups;

  • utility builds.

Core Attributes Define the Starting Direction

A useful way to evaluate a drop is to look at the Core first.

For example:

A DPS Brand piece with:

  • Weapon Damage Core;

  • Critical Hit Chance;

  • Critical Hit Damage;

already has a strong foundation.

The same Brand piece with:

  • Armor;

  • Repair Skills;

  • Explosive Resistance;

may require too many changes to become useful for that DPS build.

Secondary Attributes Explained

Secondary attributes further specialize your gear.

They can broadly support offense, defense, skills, or utility.

The game's progression systems use stat categories including Weapon Damage, Headshot Damage, Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Hazard Protection, Skill Damage, Skill Haste, Skill Duration, and Skill Repair.

Critical Hit Chance

Critical Hit Chance determines how frequently eligible weapon shots critically hit.

It is especially important for:

  • Assault Rifles;

  • SMGs;

  • LMGs;

  • crit-focused rifles;

  • many conventional DPS builds.

Critical Hit Chance should be balanced with Critical Hit Damage rather than stacked blindly.

Critical Hit Damage

Critical Hit Damage determines how much additional damage your critical hits deal.

Once your build already has sufficient Critical Hit Chance, adding Critical Hit Damage can significantly increase your output.

Headshot Damage

Headshot Damage is particularly valuable for:

  • Marksman Rifles;

  • Rifles;

  • precision pistol builds;

  • Headhunter setups;

  • Hotshot builds.

It becomes less attractive if you rarely hit heads.

Your actual accuracy should influence your stat choices.

Weapon Handling

Weapon Handling improves multiple aspects of weapon control.

It can make weapons feel noticeably more consistent, particularly when:

  • recoil is difficult;

  • reload speed is poor;

  • accuracy is limiting your damage;

  • a Marksman Rifle setup needs more consistency.

The highest theoretical damage roll is not always the highest real DPS if your weapon is difficult to control.

Skill Damage

Skill Damage directly supports offensive skills such as:

  • Assault Turret;

  • Striker Drone;

  • explosive skills;

  • other damaging abilities.

It is one of the primary secondary attributes for many offensive Skill builds.

Skill Haste

Skill Haste helps reduce the time between skill uses.

It is valuable when your build depends heavily on frequently redeploying or reactivating abilities.

However, Skill Haste is not automatically better than Skill Damage.

If your skills already have comfortable uptime, more damage may create greater value.

Status Effects

Status Effects improve builds based around effects such as:

  • Burn;

  • Bleed;

  • Ensnare;

  • Blind;

  • Disorient;

  • other crowd-control mechanics.

It is especially important for Eclipse Protocol and newer Status Effect setups such as Ember Engine.

Repair Skills

Repair Skills improves healing-oriented abilities.

It is important for dedicated healer builds using abilities such as the Restorer Hive or Reinforcer Chem Launcher.

Hazard Protection

Hazard Protection reduces the impact of hostile status effects.

It can become particularly valuable in specialized PvP or PvE builds where surviving Burn, Bleed, Shock, or other effects is a major concern.

Armor Regeneration

Armor Regeneration provides sustained defensive recovery.

It can work well in:

  • defensive solo builds;

  • tank setups;

  • long encounters;

  • builds designed to recover without relying entirely on Armor Kits.

Brand Sets Explained

High-End armor belongs to different Brands.

Equipping pieces from the same Brand unlocks Brand bonuses.

These bonuses can support areas such as:

  • weapon types;

  • critical stats;

  • armor;

  • Skill Damage;

  • Repair Skills;

  • Status Effects;

  • Headshot Damage;

  • other specialized build functions.

Do Not Automatically Equip Three Pieces

A Brand may offer bonuses at one, two, and three pieces, but that does not mean you should always use all three.

Suppose the first bonus strongly supports your weapon but the second and third do little for your build.

Using only one piece can be correct.

Every gear slot has an opportunity cost.

Red Horizon Changed Brand Bonuses

Brand Sets received another significant update with Red Horizon.

Bonuses including Shock Resistance, Health, Incoming Repairs, and Swap Speed were removed from Brand Set bonus pools, while Protection from Elites was introduced.

Weapon bonuses were also reorganized so each weapon type has at least one Brand providing its bonus at one piece and another offering it at two pieces.

Because of this, exact Brand combinations from older build guides should always be checked before copying them.

Gear Sets Explained

Gear Sets are different from Brand Sets.

They are built around a unique mechanic rather than primarily stacking conventional bonuses.

Examples include setups centered around:

  • sustained weapon stacks;

  • Bonus Armor;

  • close-range kills;

  • sniper headshots;

  • Status Effects;

  • healing;

  • shields;

  • group support.

The Four-Piece Rule

Most Gear Set builds use four pieces because that activates the defining set mechanic.

The remaining two slots can then be used for:

  • High-End Brands;

  • Named equipment;

  • Exotics.

This is why wearing six pieces of a Gear Set is rarely the automatic answer.

Chest and Backpack Talents Matter

Gear Set chest and backpack pieces generally enhance the four-piece mechanic.

Sometimes those enhancements are excellent.

Sometimes a High-End or Exotic alternative creates more value.

Read the actual bonus rather than assuming matching pieces belong together.

Talents Explained

Talents can dramatically change how gear performs.

For normal High-End armor, build-defining talents are primarily associated with chest and backpack pieces under Gear 2.0.

Weapons can also carry talents that modify their behavior.

Good Talents Need Reliable Conditions

Imagine a talent provides a large damage increase but requires a condition you activate only once every few fights.

Its theoretical value looks high.

Its practical value may be poor.

Choose talents whose conditions match your normal gameplay.

Chest Talents

Chest talents often control major aspects of:

  • weapon damage;

  • survivability;

  • Skill Damage;

  • headshot play;

  • shields;

  • Status Effects.

They can define the central mechanic of a build.

Backpack Talents

Backpack talents often complement the chest or create another layer of:

  • offensive scaling;

  • support;

  • armor;

  • skill utility;

  • status interaction.

Strong builds usually choose chest and backpack talents together rather than evaluating them independently.

Weapons Explained

Weapons should be selected for more than the damage number displayed on the inventory screen.

Important characteristics include:

  • base damage;

  • rate of fire;

  • magazine size;

  • range;

  • reload speed;

  • accuracy;

  • stability;

  • weapon talent;

  • attributes;

  • compatibility with your gear bonuses.

Assault Rifles

Assault Rifles offer one of the most balanced weapon profiles.

They generally work well for:

  • medium-range combat;

  • sustained DPS;

  • Striker builds;

  • Heartbreaker builds;

  • Critical Hit setups.

Their flexibility makes them particularly comfortable for newer players.

What Makes a Good Assault Rifle?

Look for a combination of:

  • usable recoil;

  • sufficient magazine capacity;

  • strong damage;

  • a talent your build activates consistently;

  • appropriate attributes.

A slightly weaker rifle you land almost every shot with may outperform a theoretically stronger weapon that constantly misses.

SMGs

SMGs specialize in closer-range combat.

They naturally suit:

  • Hunter's Fury;

  • aggressive shield builds;

  • Critical Hit setups;

  • close-range hybrids.

Their weakness is usually range.

If an encounter forces you to fight across long distances, an SMG build may lose much of its advantage.

Light Machine Guns

LMGs specialize in sustained firing and large magazines.

They can work well in:

  • suppressive play;

  • sustained DPS;

  • certain Striker setups;

  • builds where reload frequency matters.

Their handling and reload characteristics need to be considered alongside raw damage.

Rifles

Rifles sit between automatic weapons and Marksman Rifles.

They reward controlled, accurate shooting.

They can support:

  • Critical Hit builds;

  • Headshot Damage;

  • medium-to-long-range combat;

  • semi-automatic precision setups.

Marksman Rifles

Marksman Rifles specialize in headshot-oriented burst damage.

They are commonly paired with:

  • Headshot Damage;

  • Hotshot;

  • Headhunter-style setups;

  • sniper-focused talents.

Red Horizon strengthened several Marksman Rifle build options, while also changing Determined so older infinite body-shot chaining advice is no longer accurate.

Shotguns

Shotguns excel at close range.

They can provide:

  • burst damage;

  • strong close-range pressure;

  • rapid stack generation for certain builds;

  • synergy with aggressive playstyles.

The obvious drawback is distance.

Do not judge them against weapons fighting at completely different ranges.

Pistols

Pistols are more than emergency weapons.

Some builds center heavily around sidearms, shields, headshots, or Exotic pistol mechanics.

They can be especially important when using the Bulwark Shield, which restricts your available weapon choices.

Weapon Talents

Weapon talents can be just as important as the weapon's base stats.

A good weapon talent should reinforce your build.

For example, a talent may reward:

  • Critical Hits;

  • headshots;

  • kills;

  • Skills;

  • Status Effects;

  • weapon swapping;

  • fighting at particular ranges.

If your talent rarely activates, consider another weapon even if its raw stats are slightly lower.

Exotic Weapon Attributes

Exotics work differently from ordinary weapons because their identity comes largely from their unique talent.

However, Project Resolve made an important improvement: the third attribute on Exotic weapons became reconfigurable, giving players more control over fitting an Exotic into a build.

This can turn an already useful Exotic into a much better fit for its intended setup.

Gear and Weapon Mods

Mods provide another layer of customization.

Gear mods can add useful bonuses to compatible gear slots, while weapon attachments modify weapon performance.

Skill mods affect individual skill variants.

Do Not Ignore Mods

A collection of strong mods can complete stats that your normal equipment does not provide enough of.

Examples include using mods to improve:

  • Critical Hit Damage;

  • protection;

  • Skill Haste;

  • healing;

  • other build-specific stats.

Always check whether the mod actually addresses something your build needs.

How to Read an Item Quickly

Experienced players rarely inspect every drop for several minutes.

They follow a basic decision process.

First: Is It the Correct Item Type?

If you need a specific Gear Set, Brand, weapon, chest, or backpack, verify that first.

Second: Is the Core Correct?

Ask whether the Core Attribute supports your build.

An incorrect Core is not automatically fatal because Recalibration exists, but changing the Core means you cannot use Recalibration to fix another problem on the same item.

Third: Check Secondary Attributes

Ideally, most of the attributes already match your intended build.

For a typical crit DPS piece, a strong starting combination may be:

  • Weapon Damage;

  • Critical Hit Chance;

  • Critical Hit Damage.

For a Skill Damage build:

  • Skill Tier;

  • Skill Damage;

  • Skill Haste.

For a Status Effect build:

  • Skill Tier;

  • Status Effects;

  • Skill Haste or another relevant utility stat.

Fourth: Check the Talent

Chest and backpack drops become much harder to perfect because the talent adds another variable.

A chest with perfect attributes but the wrong talent may still be excellent if the talent is the only property you need to Recalibrate.

Fifth: Identify the One Fix

The ideal farming drop often has one problem.

That one incorrect attribute, Core, or talent can then become your Recalibration slot.

That is much easier to repair than an item with three unrelated stats.

What Is a “God Roll”?

A god roll generally refers to an item whose relevant attributes are rolled at their maximum values.

The Gear 2.0 interface was specifically designed to make high rolls easier to identify, including visual bars and highlighting for maximum attributes.

But maximum numbers do not automatically equal a perfect item.

A Bad God Roll Is Still Bad

Consider a piece with several maximum-value attributes that do not support your build.

Compare it with another piece where every attribute is correct but slightly below maximum.

The second piece may be far more valuable because Optimization can improve good attributes.

You cannot easily repair an item where the entire stat structure is wrong.

The Recalibration Library

The Recalibration Library lets you extract useful attributes and talents from unwanted gear and store them for future use.

The source item is destroyed when the value is extracted.

Once stored, the Library gives you a permanent pool of values that can be applied to compatible equipment.

What Should You Extract?

Prioritize:

  • higher attribute values than your current Library entry;

  • maximum rolls;

  • talents you have not stored;

  • useful Core Attributes;

  • values commonly required by your builds.

The Library becomes more useful the more complete it becomes.

Check the Library Before Deconstructing

An item can be worthless as equipment but extremely valuable as a Library upgrade.

Before destroying junk, check whether it contains:

  • a better roll;

  • a missing talent;

  • a maximum attribute.

This habit saves significant farming later.

Recalibration Explained

Recalibration is used when an otherwise useful item has one property you want to replace.

Your Tinkering interface combines the modern Recalibration and Optimization systems in a convenient inventory-accessible menu.

What Should You Recalibrate?

Good examples include:

  • replacing an unwanted secondary attribute;

  • changing the Core;

  • replacing a chest talent;

  • replacing a backpack talent;

  • changing a weapon talent or compatible attribute.

The best candidate is usually an item where everything except one property is already correct.

Choose the Recalibration Slot Carefully

Once you commit to changing one part of an item, the rest of the item's properties become much more important because Recalibration is not a tool for freely rebuilding every stat.

The original Recalibration Library design intentionally limits a piece to one recalibrated property.

This is why good natural rolls are valuable.

Optimization Explained

Optimization improves the numerical values of attributes already present on equipment.

It does not replace bad attributes.

That is the biggest distinction between Optimization and Recalibration.

Recalibration vs Optimization

Think of them like this:

Recalibration:
“This is the wrong attribute. Replace it.”

Optimization:
“This is the correct attribute. Make it stronger.”

Optimization allows individual attributes on eligible High-End, Gear Set, and Exotic equipment to be incrementally improved toward their maximum values.

What Should You Optimize First?

Prioritize equipment that:

  • already belongs in your finished build;

  • has the correct attributes;

  • has the correct talent;

  • is difficult to replace;

  • provides a meaningful improvement when optimized.

Weapons and important chest/backpack pieces are often strong candidates because they can affect a large part of your build's performance.

Do Not Optimize Temporary Gear

Optimization consumes resources.

If you expect to replace the item soon, save those materials.

Finding a better natural drop is often cheaper than forcing a mediocre piece to maximum values.

Expertise Explained

Expertise is separate from Optimization.

It provides another long-term progression layer after you have already obtained useful equipment.

The system contains:

  • Proficiency Rank for item types;

  • Expertise Level for your account progression;

  • Proficient status once the item's Proficiency requirement is completed;

  • Grade upgrades on individual eligible items.

Expertise and Proficiency progression are account-wide.

How Proficiency Increases

You can progress Proficiency through methods such as:

  • using equipment;

  • earning kill XP while using it;

  • donating matching items;

  • donating resources.

The Expertise interface also provides a Donate All Junk function for gear you have intentionally marked for that purpose.

When Should You Invest in Expertise?

After you know the item is worth keeping.

Do not spend significant resources increasing the Grade of a weapon that you will replace when a better roll appears.

Expertise rewards commitment.

Optimization prepares a good item.

Expertise pushes a proven item further.

Prototype Gear and Optimization

Prototype Gear changes the final stage of min-maxing.

Prototype items have stronger attribute ranges and Augments, making them potentially more powerful than conventional gear.

However, they require more careful planning.

Prototype Items Cannot Be Treated Like Normal Gear

Once equipment becomes Prototype, current rules prevent normal Optimization and Recalibration of the item.

That means you should understand the item's purpose before pushing it into this advanced progression system.

Prototype Gear is not where a new endgame build begins.

It is where an already developed build can be pushed further.

Exotic Reconfiguration

Exotics have another special system: Reconfiguration.

Instead of behaving exactly like ordinary recalibration, an Exotic can be reconfigured through its blueprint, rerolling its attributes.

This can improve a poor Exotic roll—but it can also produce weaker results than the original item.

Reconfigure Carefully

If you own only one well-rolled copy of an important Exotic, blindly rerolling it is risky.

A safer strategy is often to keep the strong copy and experiment with a weaker duplicate.

Targeted Loot

Targeted Loot is one of the most important systems for finding specific equipment.

It increases your opportunity to obtain particular:

  • weapon categories;

  • Gear Sets;

  • Brands;

  • armor slots;

  • other designated loot types.

Targeted Loot becomes available as part of the level-40 endgame.

Target the Item Category, Not Just “Good Loot”

If your build is missing one chest piece, farming an activity simply because it drops lots of random gear is inefficient.

Target the relevant:

  • Brand;

  • Gear Set;

  • weapon category;

  • armor slot.

The entire purpose of the system is reducing randomness.

Difficulty and Gear Quality

Harder content generally gives better opportunities for stronger attribute rolls.

The gear system was specifically designed so tougher content has a greater chance to reward better attribute quality.

That does not mean you should immediately select the hardest difficulty available.

Farm at an Efficient Difficulty

Suppose you can complete one Heroic activity comfortably but struggle through another difficulty with repeated wipes.

The activity you actually complete efficiently may produce more useful gear over time.

Difficulty should challenge your build without making farming painfully slow.

Crafting Gear

Crafting can be useful when you own the correct blueprint and have sufficient materials.

Blueprints can come from different sources, and unwanted equipment remains an important source of crafting materials through deconstruction.

When Crafting Is Useful

Crafting can help with:

  • obtaining a specific base item;

  • producing gear required for a build;

  • creating weapon or gear options when farming has been unlucky;

  • using excess materials.

However, crafting does not remove the normal need for good rolls.

You may need several attempts to produce the attributes you actually want.

What to Do With Unwanted Gear

Every unwanted item should go through a simple mental checklist.

Recalibration Library

Does it contain an attribute or talent upgrade?

If yes, extract it.

Expertise

Can the item contribute toward Proficiency for something you want to level?

If yes, consider donating it.

Deconstruction

Need materials?

Break the item down.

Sell

Need credits more than materials?

Selling may be more useful.

Keep

Does it support a different build you genuinely intend to use?

Save it.

Do not keep something simply because it might theoretically become useful someday.

Inventory Management Tips

Loot management becomes much easier when you make decisions immediately.

Favorite Finished Gear

Mark important equipment as Favorite.

This reduces the chance of accidentally donating or destroying a key build piece.

Use Loadouts

Save completed builds as loadouts instead of remembering every individual item.

Mark Junk While Farming

If an item clearly has no value, mark it as junk when you inspect it.

This makes later deconstruction or Expertise donation much faster.

Avoid Hoarding Mediocre Gear

Storage space disappears quickly when every item becomes a “maybe.”

Keep:

  • finished build pieces;

  • unusually good rolls;

  • important Named items;

  • useful Exotics;

  • gear with a clear future purpose.

Everything else should contribute to progression through the Library, Expertise, materials, or credits.

How to Decide Whether Gear Is Worth Keeping

A good level-40 drop should pass several questions.

Does It Fit a Real Build?

Not a hypothetical build you might create years from now.

A build you actually intend to use.

Are Most Attributes Already Correct?

One wrong property is manageable.

Several wrong properties usually mean you should continue farming.

Can Recalibration Fix It?

If changing one property creates exactly what you need, the item may be excellent.

Can Optimization Finish It?

If the attributes are correct but slightly low, Optimization can solve that.

Is It Rare Enough to Justify Keeping?

Some Named or Exotic items are worth storing even before you have a build for them because obtaining another copy may be difficult.

Is the Improvement Meaningful?

Do not spend enormous resources for a microscopic upgrade on an item you may soon replace.

Common Gear Mistakes

Following Old Gear Score Advice

Gear Score has been removed.

Modern endgame gear is level 40.

Equipping Every Exotic You Find

Exotics are specialized tools.

Use them when their unique effect strengthens the build.

Looking Only at Attribute Bars

High rolls are good.

Correct rolls are more important.

Optimizing the Wrong Item

Optimization strengthens good attributes.

It does not repair a poor item structure.

Recalibrating Too Early

Before changing a property, decide which other attributes must remain permanently.

Do not lock yourself into a bad piece.

Ignoring Talents

A chest or backpack talent can contribute more to a build than a small attribute increase.

Wearing Too Many Gear Set Pieces

Four pieces normally activate the defining Gear Set mechanic.

Use additional pieces only when their specific value justifies giving up another Brand, Named, or Exotic item.

Ignoring Weapon Handling

Missing shots reduces DPS.

A controllable weapon can outperform a harder-hitting weapon you cannot use effectively.

Investing in Expertise Too Soon

Expertise should improve proven gear.

It should not convince you to keep an inferior item because you already invested resources into it.

Rushing Into Prototype Gear

Prototype equipment is advanced progression.

Finish the foundation of your build before spending rare resources pushing it beyond normal gear limits.

A Smart Gear Progression Approach

A strong endgame character develops gear in layers.

First, obtain the correct pieces.

Then establish the correct attributes and talents.

Use the Recalibration Library to fix one important problem.

Use Optimization to improve equipment worth keeping.

Build Proficiency and Expertise over time.

Only after you already understand and trust the build should advanced Prototype investment become a major priority.

This order prevents you from spending expensive resources on gear that was never worth keeping.

FAQ

What is the maximum gear level in The Division 2?

Standard endgame equipment is level 40. Gear Score and World Tiers are no longer part of modern progression.

What are the three Core Attributes?

The main Core directions are Weapon Damage, Armor, and Skill Tier. They form the basic offensive, defensive, and skill-focused structure of most builds.

What is the difference between Brand Sets and Gear Sets?

Brand Sets provide conventional bonuses for equipping pieces from the same Brand. Gear Sets provide specialized multi-piece mechanics, usually centered around a defining four-piece talent.

Should I use six pieces of the same Gear Set?

Usually not. Four pieces normally activate the defining mechanic, leaving two slots available for useful High-End, Named, or Exotic equipment.

What is Recalibration?

Recalibration lets you replace a chosen property on eligible equipment using values stored in your Recalibration Library.

What is Optimization?

Optimization increases the numerical strength of existing attributes toward their allowed maximum values.

Should I Recalibrate or Optimize first?

First make sure the item has the right structure. Use Recalibration when one property is wrong. Use Optimization once the attributes you intend to keep are correct.

What is Expertise?

Expertise is an account-wide progression system that lets Proficient item types receive additional Grade upgrades.

Is Prototype Gear better than normal gear?

Prototype Gear can provide higher attribute potential and Augments, making it stronger for advanced builds. However, it requires considerably more investment and should not replace learning normal buildcrafting first.

Can Prototype Gear be recalibrated?

Under the current Prototype rules, once an item becomes Prototype it cannot be normally recalibrated or optimized.

Can Exotic weapons be recalibrated?

Exotic weapons have special handling. Their third attribute was made reconfigurable, while Exotic Reconfiguration can reroll the item's broader attribute values through its blueprint.

Is a god roll always worth keeping?

No. Maximum attributes are useful only when the attributes themselves support a build.

What gear should I optimize first?

Prioritize finished build pieces that are difficult to replace and that you expect to use long term.

Final Thoughts

The most important skill in The Division 2 gearing is not finding loot.

It is knowing which loot matters.

A valuable item normally starts with the correct Brand or Gear Set, the correct Core, useful secondary attributes, and—when relevant—the right talent. Once that foundation exists, Recalibration can repair one problem and Optimization can improve the rolls that remain.

After that, Expertise provides another long-term layer of progression, while Prototype Gear offers advanced players an additional ceiling beyond conventional equipment.

Do not waste resources trying to rescue every imperfect drop.

Find the right foundation first.

Then improve it.

That approach saves materials, keeps your inventory under control, and produces stronger builds much faster than judging every item only by rarity or maximum stat bars.
