The FFXIV Minimog Challenge is one of the most valuable parts of Moogle Treasure Trove: The First Hunt for Astronomy. Each Minimog challenge gives you two different objectives, but you only need to complete one of them to receive the reward: 10 Irregular Tomestones of Astronomy I and 1 Uolon Horn Token.

Minimog Challenges are special objectives found inside the Mogpendium during Moogle Treasure Trove events.
They are different from ordinary Standard Objectives.
Standard Objectives include things such as eligible dungeons, raids, PvP, GATEs, and Ocean Fishing. These can be repeated for additional Irregular Tomestones.
A Minimog Challenge works differently.
You are presented with two different activities, and completing either one finishes the challenge.
For the First Hunt for Astronomy, claiming that completion gives:
10 Irregular Tomestones of Astronomy I
1 Uolon Horn Token
The Uolon Horn Token is particularly important because normal Moogle Treasure Trove farming cannot produce it. The special token comes from Minimog and Ultimog Challenges.
That makes Minimog objectives much more important than simply another source of 10 tomestones.
This is the most important rule in the entire guide.
Completing one of the two objectives finishes the Minimog Challenge. Completing the other objective afterward does not award another 10 Astronomy I or another Uolon Horn Token.
Square Enix explicitly describes the system as completing one of the two objectives, while current First Hunt documentation confirms that completing both does not allow the reward to be claimed twice.
So do not automatically complete both activities.
Instead, compare them based on:
What you already have unlocked.
An apparently easy objective can become a long detour when it requires an entire side-content unlock chain.
What your character can complete reliably.
A familiar activity is often better than learning another system purely for one event objective.
Whether the objective contains RNG or matchmaking.
Fishing, player Mahjong, Critical Engagements, and Triple Triad all introduce different kinds of unpredictability.
Whether you want the activity's normal rewards.
Bozja progression, Palace of the Dead, Treasure Maps, Triple Triad cards, and Variant Dungeon rewards may make one choice more valuable beyond the Minimog reward itself.
The objective is not to prove that you can finish both.
The objective is to get the Minimog reward with the least unnecessary effort.
At the time of writing on September 22, 2026, the active First Hunt pair is:
Complete 5 Skirmishes in The Bozjan Southern Front
or
Play 1 Doman Mahjong match against other players
NPC Mahjong does not satisfy the Mahjong objective.
Both lead to exactly the same Minimog reward.
That means the better choice depends almost entirely on what you already have unlocked.
For players with access to The Bozjan Southern Front, five Skirmishes provide a straightforward combat-based way to finish the current Minimog objective.
Skirmishes are Bozja's FATE-like encounters. They appear around the battlefield and involve objectives such as defeating groups of enemies, killing bosses, or completing other combat tasks.
You do not need to win five difficult raid encounters.
You simply need to participate successfully in five qualifying Skirmishes.
The important efficiency trick is mobility.
Do not stand in one section of the battlefield waiting for another Skirmish to appear when active encounters are already available elsewhere.
Open your map, watch for active Skirmishes, and move between them.
With multiple players participating in the event, encounters may disappear quickly, so getting to an active Skirmish early is more useful than arriving when the boss has almost been defeated.
Grouping with other players can make obtaining contribution and moving between Skirmishes more comfortable.
Bozjan Skirmishes function similarly to FATEs and support open participation. Being in a group also makes repeated combat less demanding when the instance is busy.
You do not need a specialized composition.
A normal group of players working through active events is enough.
These are separate types of Bozja content.
Skirmishes happen directly throughout the battlefield.
Critical Engagements require registration through the Resistance Recruitment interface and have restricted participant numbers.
If your Mogpendium specifically asks for five Skirmishes, completing an unrelated Critical Engagement should not be treated as one of those five required Skirmish completions.
Read the objective exactly as written.
Bozja is not automatically available to every character.
The Southern Front is unlocked through Where Eagles Nest after progressing through the Save the Queen story requirements. The unlock chain requires Shadowbringers-era progression and the Return to Ivalice raid storyline.
That matters when choosing between the two Minimog objectives.
If you already use Bozja, five Skirmishes are simple.
If you have never touched Return to Ivalice or the Resistance Weapon storyline, unlocking an entire field operation just for one Minimog reward may be far more work than choosing the alternative objective.
Always check the second Minimog option before beginning a major unlock chain.
The current alternative is to play one Doman Mahjong match against other players.
The wording matters.
The current Minimog condition requires participation in one qualifying player match, not winning the match.
Current First Hunt documentation simply says to play one match against other players.
That makes this objective more approachable than players unfamiliar with Mahjong may expect.
You do not need to master Riichi Mahjong before participating.
You need to finish a qualifying player match.
This is the main trap.
The Gold Saucer offers Mahjong against novice, intermediate, and advanced NPCs, but the First Hunt objective specifically requires a match with other players.
Do not spend time completing an NPC match and expect the Mogpendium challenge to update.
Use the Gold Saucer section of the Duty Finder for player matchmaking.
Square Enix confirms that Doman Mahjong player matches are registered through the Gold Saucer tab.
Doman Mahjong has very light requirements compared with Bozja.
You need to be at least level 15, have access to the Gold Saucer, and have completed It Could Happen to You. The Mahjong unlock is obtained from Lewena at the Gold Saucer, X:4.8, Y:6.1.
This makes Mahjong particularly useful for characters that do not have Bozja progression.
You do not need to become a Mahjong expert for the Minimog objective.
Square Enix provides a Hints option that can recommend discards and potential calls. The interface also contains Dangerous Tile markers and tile-name support.
The hints are not guaranteed to make optimal strategic decisions, but they can make your first match much easier to understand.
The important thing is to actually participate rather than immediately abandoning the match.
Square Enix notes that abandoning player Mahjong can carry normal duty-abandonment restrictions, and the match itself continues without you.
There is no universal winner.
Already have Bozja unlocked?
Five Skirmishes are predictable combat objectives and may be the more familiar option.
Never unlocked Bozja but have the Gold Saucer?
Doman Mahjong requires considerably less prerequisite progression.
Strongly dislike Mahjong?
Bozja lets you finish the objective through normal combat.
Want Bozja progression anyway?
The Skirmishes can simultaneously provide mettle, experience, Poetics, and other field-operation rewards.
Want the least complicated unlock?
Mahjong has much lighter access requirements, though match length and matchmaking can vary.
This is exactly why Square Enix gives two Minimog choices.
The system is designed to let different players choose an activity that suits their progression.
The First Hunt's Minimog pool covers a surprisingly wide range of FFXIV systems.
Rather than presenting them as a calendar or schedule, it is more useful to understand how each objective type works and what can make it faster.
Current published First Hunt listings include objectives involving Bozja, fishing, Treasure Hunts, Doman Mahjong, Triple Triad, Palace of the Dead, Castrum Lacus Litore, Delubrum Reginae, and Variant Dungeon content.
One of the First Hunt objectives asks players to catch a Caterwauler.
Buying a Caterwauler from another player does not complete the Minimog objective.
The event tracking requires your character to actually catch the fish.
Fortunately, Caterwauler is relatively friendly by big-fish standards.
It can be caught at The Mourning Widow in Lower La Noscea, around X:24, Y:23. It does not require a specific weather window or time of day.
That removes two of the biggest frustrations normally associated with FFXIV big fishing.
Moth Pupa is the recommended bait because it gives a smaller competing fish pool than the Versatile Lure.
Current fishing documentation lists Moth Pupa as the preferred bait and notes that it is sold cheaply by vendors in the starting cities.
Versatile Lure can also catch Caterwauler, but it opens the possibility of hooking considerably more fish.
For a Minimog objective, efficiency matters more than convenience.
Use the bait that narrows the pool.
If your Fisher has Surface Slap, using it on one of the competing fish prevents that species from appearing again until the effect is consumed or broken, improving your odds of hooking another species.
This is optional.
You do not need high-level Fisher optimization to catch Caterwauler.
The important advantages are already strong: no special weather and no time restriction.
Another objective type asks you to decipher a timeworn map and collect the treasure.
Those are two separate parts.
You must decipher the map and actually reach and collect its treasure.
Treasure Hunt is unlocked through the level 36 quest Treasures and Tribulations, which grants the Decipher and Dig actions.
After deciphering the map:
identify the location;
travel there;
use Dig;
defeat any enemies that appear;
open the treasure chest.
The objective is complete only after the treasure is collected.
Timeworn maps are tradable before being deciphered, so buying or obtaining one from another player can remove the gathering step.
The event challenge concerns deciphering the map and obtaining the treasure, not personally gathering the original map.
That can make this one of the simpler Minimog options for players who already have Treasure Hunt unlocked.
During the First Hunt, players discovered that a Mysterious Map used in the ARR Zodiac Weapon questline can satisfy this objective as well. Current community documentation records this interaction.
However, access to Mysterious Maps requires the relevant relic progression, so this is most useful for characters who already have that system unlocked.
For everyone else, a normal Timeworn Map is usually simpler.
Some Minimog objectives ask for a Critical Engagement rather than Skirmishes.
A Critical Engagement is not an ordinary open-world Skirmish.
When one becomes available, it appears through the Resistance Recruitment system. You register for deployment, and if selected, you can enter the enclosed encounter arena.

Because participation can be limited, you should register immediately when the engagement you need appears.
Critical Engagements can be triggered through Bozja activity rather than appearing completely independently, so actively participating in the instance is more productive than standing around waiting.
The actual combat is generally more demanding than normal Skirmishes, but you only need one successful qualifying completion when that is your Minimog objective.
The First Hunt also includes an objective involving the Idle Imperial in Azys Lla.
This one is different because simply playing is not enough.
You need to win the Triple Triad match.
The Idle Imperial is located around Azys Lla X:28.1, Y:31.2, and access to the area requires relevant Heavensward MSQ progression, including The First Flight of the Excelsior.
The opponent uses special Triple Triad rules, so going in with a weak starter deck can turn an otherwise short objective into repeated losses.
If you already play Triple Triad, use a deck you trust.
If not, review the active rule set before challenging the NPC and choose cards that work well within it.
The exact deck available to each player varies too much to prescribe one universal five-card solution.
The goal is simply to secure one win.
One First Hunt objective asks you to clear any area of Palace of the Dead.
Current event documentation clarifies that an “area” means a set of 10 floors.
The Minimog challenge does not require reaching floor 50 or making a deep solo attempt.
A normal ten-floor set is sufficient when that objective is active.
Palace of the Dead is unlocked through The House That Death Built from Nojiro Marujiro in New Gridania at level 17 after the required early MSQ progression.
For players who already have Palace unlocked, this can be a very accessible challenge because you can use a normal progression save rather than treating it like serious Deep Dungeon pushing.
The First Hunt objective pool also goes deeper into Bozja with The Battle of Castrum Lacus Litore.
Castrum Lacus Litore is not available immediately after entering the Southern Front.
You need Resistance Rank 10 and the relevant quest progression. It supports up to 48 players and is entered through the field-operation recruitment system when available.
That means this objective is excellent for someone who already completed significant Bozja progression.
It is not necessarily a good reason to start the entire Bozja storyline from zero unless you wanted to do that content anyway.
This illustrates a recurring Minimog principle:
The fastest objective is usually the one whose prerequisites you have already completed.
Another First Hunt objective involves Delubrum Reginae.
This content sits further along the Bozjan Resistance storyline and requires prior Castrum and Save the Queen progression.
Current event listings specifically say that Delubrum Reginae Savage does not count for the corresponding Minimog objective.
That distinction matters.
Do not assume the harder version automatically satisfies an objective that names the normal duty.
When the Mogpendium gives an exact duty name, follow it literally.
Current published First Hunt information also lists a Mount Rokkon completion objective, but there is an accuracy warning worth knowing.
The community wiki currently labels the requirement of four Mount Rokkon completions as needing validation and subject to change.
Because it has not yet been validated in-game at the time of writing, do not build your entire event plan around that number.
When this objective becomes active, check the Mogpendium itself for the final requirement.
What is confirmed independently is that Mount Rokkon is a level 90 Variant Dungeon unlocked through Mononoke Aware, and Variant Dungeons support flexible parties of one to four players.
That means the normal Variant version is accessible without assembling a conventional tank-healer-DPS light party.
But the precise First Hunt Minimog completion count should be verified in-game rather than treated as guaranteed ahead of activation.
The special reward system is the main reason Minimog Challenges deserve attention.
The Uolon Horn requires:
100 Irregular Tomestones of Astronomy I
and
10 Uolon Horn Tokens
A completed Minimog reward gives 1 Uolon Horn Token.
The First Hunt Ultimog Challenge gives 5 Uolon Horn Tokens for completing Aloalo Island six times.
This is crucial.
You can farm Standard Objectives repeatedly and accumulate hundreds of Astronomy I.
That does not make up for missing Uolon Horn Tokens.
Dungeon farming, PvP, GATEs, and Ocean Fishing solve the regular currency requirement.
Minimog and Ultimog Challenges solve the special-token requirement.
If the Uolon Horn is one of your event goals, Minimog completions should therefore have higher priority than endlessly farming ordinary tomestones.
Missing one Minimog challenge does not delete the tokens you already earned.
Square Enix confirms that both the Uolon Horn and Uolon Horn Tokens will return in the Second Hunt for Astronomy, and tokens earned during the First Hunt can still be used there.
That is especially important for players joining the First Hunt after it has already started.
Do not abandon the mount because you cannot obtain every First Hunt token.
Collect whatever tokens remain available to you and preserve them for the Second Hunt.
One of the easiest mistakes has nothing to do with completing the objective itself.
Standard Objective rewards are automatically delivered when the activity finishes.
Minimog rewards must be manually claimed from the Mogpendium.
The same manual-claim rule applies to Weekly and Ultimog rewards.
So after completing your chosen objective:
open the Mogpendium;
check that the Minimog Challenge is marked complete;
select Claim Rewards;
confirm that you received the Astronomy I and Uolon Horn Token.
Do not complete the challenge and assume everything has already entered your inventory.
Square Enix also states that Mogpendium rewards cannot be claimed after the specified post-event patch cutoff, so there is little reason to leave a finished challenge unclaimed.
You receive one Minimog reward, not one reward for each option.
Pick whichever objective is easier and stop once it has completed.
If the challenge says to catch Caterwauler, purchasing one does not count.
Your character needs to catch it.
NPC matches do not satisfy the current player-Mahjong objective.
Use a player match through the Gold Saucer Duty Finder instead.
The Treasure Hunt objective requires you to go beyond decoding the map.
Locate the treasure, use Dig, complete the encounter, and collect the chest.
Both occur in Bozja, but they are different systems.
If the objective says Skirmishes, complete Skirmishes.
If it says Critical Engagement, register for and complete a Critical Engagement.
When an objective names normal Delubrum Reginae, Savage does not automatically count.
The First Hunt's current published information specifically excludes Delubrum Reginae Savage from that challenge.

The FFXIV Minimog Challenge is much easier when you stop treating both objectives as mandatory.
Every challenge gives you two paths, but only one needs to be completed. Choose the activity that matches your existing unlocks, finish it correctly, return to the Mogpendium, and manually claim your 10 Irregular Tomestones of Astronomy I and 1 Uolon Horn Token.
For the current objective pair, players with Bozja already unlocked can work through five Southern Front Skirmishes, while players who would rather avoid Bozja can complete a qualifying Doman Mahjong match against other players. Neither choice is universally faster because instance activity, Mahjong matchmaking, and your existing unlocks all matter.
The same approach applies throughout the First Hunt. When the objective involves fishing, use the correct bait and catch the fish yourself. When it involves Treasure Maps, collect the actual treasure. When it sends you into Bozja, distinguish Skirmishes from Critical Engagements. When it asks for Palace of the Dead, understand exactly how much content needs to be cleared. And whenever a future requirement has not yet been validated, trust the in-game Mogpendium over an unconfirmed advance listing.
Most importantly, do not ignore Minimog if you want the Uolon Horn. Regular Treasure Trove farming can always provide additional Astronomy I, but Uolon Horn Tokens come from the challenge system. Each Minimog completion therefore moves you toward a reward that ordinary dungeon grinding cannot replace.
