How to Unlock Beastmaster in FFXIV Patch 7.56

Beastmaster is available once you meet a relatively accessible set of requirements.

Beastmaster Unlock Requirements

You need a level 50 Disciple of War or Magic and must have completed the Main Scenario Quest “The Ultimate Weapon.”

Once those conditions are met, go to New Gridania at X:11.8, Y:13.6 and speak with the Excited Adventurer.

The unlock quest is:

Strangers in the Wood

Completing it gives access to Beastmaster, which begins at level 1. The job is part of Dawntrail content, so the appropriate expansion registration is also required.

Beastmaster has no starting class.

You unlock the job directly and begin building it from the ground up.

What Makes Beastmaster a Limited Job?

Beastmaster shares the limited-job category with Blue Mage, but the restrictions and progression systems are not identical.

The most important thing to understand is that Beastmaster is intentionally separated from normal FFXIV endgame progression.

It cannot use role actions, cannot participate in PvP, cannot use Duty Roulettes, and cannot enter several forms of content including Deep Dungeons, Eureka, Bozja, the Occult Crescent, Variant and Criterion Dungeons, Ultimate raids, Squadron Missions, Stone, Sky, Sea, and Hall of the Novice.

Supported duties can still be entered with other players through preformed or unrestricted parties.

That is particularly important while leveling because Beastmaster cannot simply queue Duty Roulette: Leveling and let matchmaking build a party.

Limited-job rules also mean Beastmaster cannot take ordinary quests unless those quests are available to every class and job, with its own Beastmaster quests being the main exception. Retainers cannot be assigned Beastmaster either.

Beastmaster Is Not Blue Mage Leveling 2.0

One especially important difference concerns EXP.

Beastmaster receives increased EXP from FATEs, but does not receive Blue Mage's special bonus from killing ordinary open-world enemies.

This completely changes the fastest leveling strategy.

Grinding high-level monsters because “that worked on Blue Mage” is one of the easiest ways to waste time.

How Beastmaster Captures Beasts

Capturing creatures is the defining Beastmaster mechanic.

You begin with access to Gauge and Capture, which allow you to determine whether a target can become a familiar and then attempt to forge a pact with it.

Gauge Tells You Whether a Beast Can Be Captured

Gauge checks whether a pact can be formed and indicates how difficult the target may be to capture.

Not every enemy is an eligible familiar.

The Master's Bestiary ultimately contains up to 50 capturable beasts, each with its own abilities, Kinship category, and elemental characteristics.

Community testing has also confirmed an important rule:

Your Beastmaster must be at least the same level as the specific enemy you are trying to capture.

That is why leveling before trying to complete the entire Bestiary is so efficient.

Every level gained expands the pool of creatures available to you.

How Capture Works

Using Capture applies the required effect to an eligible target.

The target must then die while the Capture effect is active.

Lower enemy HP increases your capture chance, but capture is not guaranteed. Square Enix confirms that weakening the enemy first improves the chance of success. Current player testing recommends getting difficult targets very low before making the attempt.

Capture itself is personal.

If several Beastmasters are fighting the same creature, each can attempt to capture it. Community testing has found that multiple players can successfully obtain the same creature from one kill, provided each Beastmaster has properly applied their own Capture effect.

That is useful for dungeon and alliance-group farming.

What Is the Master's Bestiary?

Every successfully captured creature is added to the Master's Bestiary.

This is Beastmaster's central familiar-management interface.

The Bestiary shows information such as creature abilities, natural habitats, and other important details. Patch 7.56 also added the Master's Bestiary to Lodestone character profiles.

Your Bestiary Is Your Real Beastmaster Toolkit

A normal FFXIV job gets most of its flexibility from the actions permanently placed on its hotbars.

Beastmaster is different.

Your available beast collection determines a huge part of your toolkit.

Different familiars provide different:

Trick actions,

Tempered Release effects,

Kinship abilities through Borrow,

elements,

crowd-control options,

defensive effects,

utility,

and damage profiles.

You therefore become stronger not only by gaining character levels, but also by expanding your available roster.

Battlehorns and Your Three-Beast Setup

Captured beasts do not automatically appear in combat.

You assign them to Battlehorns.

By level 50, Beastmaster has three Battlehorn slots available for assigned familiars. Only one familiar can be active at a time, but you can swap among the three during combat.

This is the foundation of a good Beastmaster setup.

Think in Roles, Not Only Individual Beasts

The best three-beast setup is usually not “the three highest-damage creatures.”

A much stronger setup covers different needs.

One familiar might supply high single-target damage.

Another may offer crowd control.

A third might give an interrupt, ranged attack, cleanse, defensive buff, or survival option.

Borrow makes this even more important because Kinship abilities are shared by kin type, not unique to each individual species.

There are eight Kinship categories:

  • Beastkin – Beastskin: a powerful Beastkin utility option.

  • Vilekin – Vileskin: increases block-related defensive value and can help restore TP.

  • Cloudkin – Cloud Skim: Cloudkin utility.

  • Seedkin – Seedsower: Seedkin utility.

  • Wavekin – Quelling Wave: gives Beastmaster an important ranged attack option.

  • Scalekin – Scaleskin: Scalekin defensive utility.

  • Soulkin – Soul Crush: provides an interrupt.

  • Ashkin – Scouring Ash: useful dispel-related utility.

So if you need an interrupt, the question is not necessarily:

“Do I have Coblyn?”

It is:

“Do I have a useful Soulkin in one of my three Battlehorn slots?”

That is a much better way to build Beastmaster.

How Beastmaster Combat Works

The combat system looks confusing at first because the job tracks both your resources and your familiar's resources.

Once you understand the relationship between them, it becomes much easier.

Beastmaster and Familiar TP

Your Beastmaster gauge tracks separate resources for you and your active familiar.

Your TP and familiar Pet TP each cap at 250.

Your own TP primarily comes from weaponskills.

Your familiar builds Pet TP through its attacks.

Both resources feed into the Instinctual Combo system.

The four instincts are represented by different affinities. The official terminology is:

Volant,

Rampant,

Durant,

and Eldritch.

The important mechanic is that Beastmaster and familiar actions can be chained together within a short window.

Executing compatible instinctual actions creates an enhanced combo and additional damage.

The Basic Axe Combo

At level 50, your normal melee flow begins around:

Smash Axe → Axeblade Bite → Shieldsplitter

The latter combo steps generate TP, which eventually lets you use the stronger instinctual axe attacks.

This basic combo is not the exciting part of the job.

Its purpose is largely to build toward your more powerful resource interactions.

Trick

Your familiar's Trick consumes Pet TP and participates in Instinctual Combos.

Which affinity Trick uses depends on the familiar you currently have summoned.

That means changing familiars can change what instinctual pairing is available to you.

Rally and Rallying Cheer

As Beastmaster progresses, it gains additional ways to restore resources.

Rally, unlocked at level 28, uses Mastered Instinct to restore your TP.

Rallying Cheer, available later at level 40, uses Natural Instinct to restore your familiar's Pet TP.

At level 50, correct use of these resources leads into Beastmaster's strongest finisher sequence.

The important practical lesson for beginners is not to spend resources randomly.

Your damage improves substantially once you begin planning TP, Pet TP, your instinct diamonds, and familiar swaps together instead of treating every glowing action as something to press immediately.

Tempered Release, Borrow, and Parting Blow

These three mechanics are what make your familiar choice feel different from simply having a cosmetic pet.

Tempered Release

Tempered Release orders the current familiar to perform its unique special action.

These effects vary dramatically by beast.

Some are raw damage.

Others add crowd control or useful encounter effects.

For example, some creatures have exceptionally useful dungeon control abilities, while Wespe's Final Sting is valued as a powerful finishing attack.

Borrow

Borrow temporarily lets the Beastmaster use the familiar's Kinship ability.

Because Kinship is determined by kin category, Borrow is one of the main reasons to think about your familiar team strategically.

A Wavekin gives you access to Quelling Wave.

A Soulkin can provide Soul Crush for interrupting.

An Ashkin gives Scouring Ash.

A Beastkin can provide Beastskin.

This is where Beastmaster becomes a toolbox rather than a simple pet DPS.

Parting Blow

Parting Blow is the transition tool.

It delivers a strong area attack and dismisses the current familiar, putting that Battlehorn on cooldown. Community testing currently places it at very high AoE value with no normal damage falloff, making it particularly strong in dungeon packs.

The best use is generally:

extract value from the current familiar first, then use Parting Blow when you are ready to transition into another Battlehorn.

Do not treat it as ordinary filler.

Best Beastmaster Setup for General Play

There is no single permanent “best three beasts” for every activity.

The best setup depends on what the encounter demands.

Still, current Patch 7.56 testing has already identified several excellent families of creatures.

Strong General Damage Setup

Mantis, Diremite, and Wespe are currently a very strong damage-oriented foundation.

Icy Veins' Crucible testing highlights the combination for its overall damage, with Wespe's Final Sting acting as an especially strong single-target finisher.

Mantis and Diremite are both Vilekin-style offensive options, while Wespe is also highly valued because it can finish priority targets before dangerous mechanics become a problem.

This is a strong choice when the encounter mostly asks:

“How quickly can I kill this?”

Strong Utility-Oriented Setup

Vulture, Bat, and Colibri provide a useful balance of damage and utility.

Current Crucible recommendations highlight this family of setups because Vulture can help with enemy buffs while Bat provides useful defensive and cleansing value.

Bat is especially useful for newer Beastmasters because the job has limited native recovery options.

Its Blood Drain can provide valuable sustain, while the Cloudkin package contributes additional utility.

Good Utility Beasts to Keep Available

Several beasts are worth collecting even if they do not live permanently in your default three slots.

Ice Golem or another Soulkin can cover interrupts through Soul Crush.

Geshunpest can provide Scouring Ash utility.

Chimera is extremely useful for dungeon packs because The Ram's Voice can inflict Deep Freeze.

Treant has Acorn Bomb, which can apply Nightmare to groups of susceptible enemies.

Buffalo provides a useful stun.

Coeurl can contribute paralysis and significant mitigation.

Bat helps with sustain and defensive utility.

This is why completing more of the Bestiary matters.

You are building a library of encounter solutions.

Best Beastmaster Setup for Dungeons

Dungeon Beastmaster plays differently from Crucible Beastmaster.

Large trash packs heavily reward AoE damage and crowd control.

Chimera Is Excellent for Trash Packs

Chimera is one of the strongest dungeon familiars because The Ram's Voice can freeze an entire pack.

Crowd-controlling a group dramatically reduces incoming damage while your party burns enemies down.

The combination becomes particularly strong when followed by Parting Blow.

Treant Is Better Than It First Looks

Treant's Acorn Bomb applies Nightmare to susceptible targets.

Current testing considers it particularly effective while leveling because the crowd-control duration can trivialize dangerous trash packs that are not immune.

Buffalo Provides Straightforward Control

Buffalo's stun is simpler but effective.

If you are running a dungeon where freezing or sleeping is awkward, a reliable stun can still create enough breathing room for your party to erase the pack.

The bigger lesson is:

a dungeon Beastmaster setup should normally prioritize AoE control and fast pack deletion over niche boss-only utility.

Best Beastmaster Setup for the Crucible

The Crucible changes Beastmaster team building because familiar survival and Beast Rank become major progression systems.

Start With a Balanced Core

Current testing recommends several viable starter combinations, with Mantis / Diremite / Wespe and Vulture / Bat / Colibri among the most useful foundations.

The first leans harder toward damage.

The second gives you a little more utility.

You can then swap additional creatures into the roster according to what the Board Layout says you will face.

Square Enix specifically encourages players to inspect enemies and weaknesses before choosing the team.

Recommended Team Is Useful, but Learn Why It Chooses Beasts

The Crucible can automatically generate a Recommended Team.

That is helpful when learning.

But long-term success requires understanding why certain beasts work.

Enemy weaknesses,

available interrupts,

dispels,

familiar durability,

feed choices,

and your ability to control incoming damage can all matter more than simply selecting the creature with the largest damage number.

What Is the Crucible of the Unbroken?

The Crucible of the Unbroken is Beastmaster's exclusive solo progression mode.

It begins through the Beastmaster questline at level 30.

You enter from the Central Shroud and progress across board spaces toward a central boss encounter.

Player and Familiar HP Do Not Naturally Recover

This is one of the biggest changes from ordinary FFXIV combat.

Your HP and familiar HP persist across the Crucible board and do not naturally regenerate.

You must use board resources, items, campsites, and other mechanics to survive.

If your familiar falls to zero HP, it can no longer fight.

If the Beastmaster reaches zero HP, the run fails.

This means your familiar's health becomes a resource.

You can use Snarl and Challenge inside the Crucible to redistribute enemy attention between yourself and your familiar.

Strong players deliberately let the beast absorb damage when that produces a safer overall run.

Familiar Beast Rank Explained

Familiars have separate progression inside the Crucible.

At the end of a run, every participating familiar receives EXP based on your score.

Every 100 familiar EXP increases Beast Rank, up to a maximum of Rank 25.

Higher ranks improve Crucible-specific attributes:

Strength,

Intelligence,

Physical Resistance,

Magic Resistance,

and Constitution.

That means a freshly captured beast and a Rank 25 version of the same familiar can perform very differently inside the Crucible.

Do Not Spread Beast EXP Too Thin Early

It is tempting to level every creature equally.

That can make progression slower.

Build a reliable core team first.

If three or four beasts are carrying your Crucible clears, raising those creatures to appropriate Beast Rank makes later boards much easier.

Once your core is strong, expand into specialist beasts for specific board mechanics and weaknesses.

Kornago Gourds Make Some Captures Easier

Not every familiar has to be manually caught in combat forever.

The Crucible rewards Faded Remnants of Resilience and Bright Remnants of Resilience according to your score.

These can be exchanged at the Kornago merchant for Beastmaster rewards, including Kornago Gourds.

Gourds allow you to forge pacts with certain beasts without fighting and capturing them normally.

More gourds become available as you progress through Beastmaster job quests.

That makes the Crucible part of your Bestiary progression as well as your familiar-training progression.

Fastest Way to Level Beastmaster

The dedicated leveling guide goes deeper, but the efficient Patch 7.56 approach is simple.

Use FATEs for the Opening Levels

Beastmaster's special EXP advantage is FATE completion.

Current testing recommends using FATEs until roughly the first dungeon range rather than grinding ordinary enemies.

Move Into Synced Dungeons

Once dungeon leveling becomes practical, current testing finds synced dungeons extremely efficient.

Use a preformed party, because Beastmaster cannot access ordinary Duty Roulette matchmaking.

Run the highest-level ARR leveling dungeon your group can clear efficiently, and move upward when doing so actually improves EXP enough to justify changing content.

Capture useful beasts inside those dungeons whenever convenient.

Do not abandon a strong leveling route every few minutes just to chase another Bestiary entry.

Level First, Complete the Bestiary Later

Because you need to meet a beast's level before capturing it, reaching 50 first makes large-scale Bestiary completion much easier.

Capture useful creatures while leveling, but do not try to collect all 50 before reaching the cap.

Beastmaster Gear and Best Setup at Level 50

Beastmaster shares Striking gear with Monk and Samurai while leveling.

At level 50, however, the Crucible introduces Beastmaster-specific equipment that changes the gearing picture.

Use Beastmaster Job Gear for the Crucible

Current Patch 7.56 testing finds the Beastmaster-specific Crucible gear to be the most important level-50 equipment, because it contains Crucible-specific attributes and stronger defensive properties than ordinary ARR alternatives.

The base Beastmaster set begins at item level 90 and is then improved through the Crucible using its reward systems.

A September 17 hotfix also added minimum average-item-level requirements to prevent players from accidentally entering later Crucible boards in badly outdated equipment.

The requirements are currently:

First Board of the Unbroken – average item level 25.

Second Board – average item level 35.

Third Board – average item level 82.

First Master's Board – average item level 82.

Second Master's Board – average item level 82.

Meeting the minimum does not necessarily mean your setup is comfortable.

For the later boards, upgrading the Beastmaster-specific set is far more sensible than trying to scrape through at the entry requirement.

Beastmaster Stat Priority

Because Beastmaster is still very new, some detailed pet-scaling questions are still being tested.

Current theorycrafting uses the following general baseline:

Strength first through higher item level, then Critical Hit, Direct Hit, Determination, with Skill Speed adjusted to comfort.

There are two complications.

Pet interactions with Critical Hit and Direct Hit have historically behaved differently in FFXIV systems.

And Beastmaster generates much of its TP through weaponskills, which may make Skill Speed more valuable than it appears on a conventional melee job.

So treat the exact substat ordering as an evolving optimization question rather than immutable law.

For ordinary players, appropriate item level and Beastmaster-specific Crucible gear matter much more than obsessing over tiny materia differences.

Common Beastmaster Mistakes to Avoid

Leveling Like Blue Mage

Beastmaster does not get boosted EXP from normal open-world kills.

Use FATEs early and synced dungeons once they become efficient.

Capturing Everything Immediately

You must meet the creature's level to capture it.

Leveling first saves huge amounts of unnecessary travel.

Using Three Familiars With the Same Purpose

Three pure damage beasts may look impressive until an encounter requires an interrupt, cleanse, ranged option, or defensive ability.

Build around complementary functions.

Forgetting Kinship Categories

Borrow depends on kin type.

Sometimes the specific species matters less than having the correct kin category available in your Battlehorn setup.

Treating Your Familiar as Disposable in the Crucible

Familiar HP does not regenerate normally.

Use Snarl and Challenge deliberately and manage your beast like a second HP pool rather than letting it die immediately.

Spreading Beast Rank Across Too Many Familiars

A small number of appropriately ranked beasts is more useful for progression than dozens of undertrained familiars.

Develop your core first.

Ignoring Parting Blow

Parting Blow is an important transition and AoE tool.

Use the familiar's other value first, then finish with Parting Blow before moving to another Battlehorn when appropriate.

Conclusion

FFXIV Beastmaster in Patch 7.56 is best understood as its own progression game inside Final Fantasy XIV.

Reaching level 50 is only the beginning.

The real job progression comes from building the Master's Bestiary, learning which Kinship categories solve different problems, setting up your three Battlehorns intelligently, mastering the relationship between TP and Pet TP, and raising useful familiars through the Crucible of the Unbroken.

For leveling, keep the strategy simple.

Take advantage of Beastmaster's improved FATE EXP at low level, move into synced dungeons with a preformed party, and capture useful creatures when they naturally overlap with your route rather than trying to complete all 50 Bestiary entries immediately.

For combat, think beyond raw damage.

A strong Beastmaster setup combines a damage option with tools that solve actual encounters. Wespe, Mantis, Diremite, Vulture, Bat, Chimera, Treant, Ice Golem, and other specialist creatures all have situations where they outperform a generic high-damage choice.

And inside the Crucible, the job becomes deeper again.

Your familiar HP becomes a resource.

Beast Rank matters.

Feed and Beast Gear matter.

Enemy weaknesses influence your roster.

And the Beastmaster-specific equipment you earn and upgrade there becomes central to pushing the harder boards.

The most important lesson is therefore simple:

Do not search for one permanent “best Beastmaster pet.” Build a Beastmaster roster.

The job is strongest when you can look at an encounter, identify what it demands, and summon the creature that gives you the right answer.

Players looking for additional Final Fantasy XIV progression services can also explore BoostRoom.
