What Is a Flame Altar in Enshrouded 1.0?

A Flame Altar is the central structure used to establish a permanent base in Embervale.

It creates a protected building area where your structures, decorations, crafting stations, and terrain changes can be preserved.

Without an active Flame Altar, changes made to the surrounding world are generally temporary.

Flame Altars also provide several important features.

Permanent Base Protection

Every Flame Altar establishes a designated building area.

Structures placed within this area remain protected as long as the altar stays active.

This allows you to create houses, castles, farms, workshops, and other permanent settlements.

Fast Travel

Active Flame Altars serve as fast-travel destinations.

This makes them extremely valuable when exploring distant regions.

Instead of repeatedly traveling across the map, you can establish outposts near important areas and return when necessary.

Rested Buff

The Flame Altar also acts as a source of warmth.

Combined with suitable shelter and comfort, it helps support the Rested buff.

Rested improves maximum Stamina and Stamina Regeneration, making exploration, mining, and combat more efficient.

Character Respeccing

You can use a Flame Altar to reset your Skill Tree.

This allows you to experiment with different builds without permanently locking yourself into one combat style.

Flame Progression

Most importantly, Flame Altars allow you to strengthen the Flame.

This increases your character's core attributes, Shroud protection, and maximum active altar capacity.

Your Flame Altar isn't just your base. It's one of the main systems controlling your progression through Enshrouded.

Flame Level vs. Flame Altar Level: What's the Difference?

This is one of the most common points of confusion for players.

Both upgrades are available from the Flame Altar menu, but they perform different functions.

Strengthen the Flame

The Strengthen the Flame option upgrades your global Flame Level.

In Enshrouded 1.0, the maximum Flame Level is 11.

Strengthening the Flame provides several benefits:

  • Increases your Shroud Passage Level.

  • Improves core character attributes.

  • Increases maximum Shroud survival time.

  • Unlocks additional active Flame Altars.

  • Supports access to more dangerous regions.

  • Unlocks additional crafting tiers.

  • Eventually enables Shroud removal through Flame Altars.

You only need to strengthen the Flame once per upgrade.

The improvement applies to your overall progression rather than requiring you to upgrade every individual base.

Upgrade Altar

The Upgrade Altar option increases the building area of one specific Flame Altar.

There are four Altar Levels.

Each requires different resources and provides a larger protected building zone.

Upgrading one altar doesn't automatically upgrade your other altars.

It also doesn't increase the number of Flame Altars you can place.

If you want more active bases, strengthen the Flame. If you want a larger base, upgrade that specific altar.

How to Craft Your First Flame Altar

Before worrying about the final upgrades, you'll need to establish your first base.

The introductory quest introduces the Flame Altar crafting system.

Flame Altar Crafting Recipe

Required Material:

5 Stone

Crafting Method:

Manual Crafting

Once you accept the relevant introductory base-building quest, the Flame Altar recipe becomes available.

Collect five Stone and craft the structure.

Choose a suitable location outside the Shroud and place it.

Where Should You Build Your First Base?

The Springlands is a practical starting location.

Try to choose an area with:

  • Access to basic materials.

  • Enough room for future construction.

  • Nearby quest objectives.

  • Convenient terrain.

  • Reasonable access to important travel routes.

You don't need to find the perfect permanent location immediately.

As your Flame Level increases, you'll unlock more altars and can establish additional bases elsewhere.

All Flame Levels and Maximum Flame Altars in Enshrouded 1.0

Your Flame Level determines how many active Flame Altars you can have in the world.

Version 1.0 increased the maximum capacity to 16.

Here are the supported altar limits for every Flame Level.

Flame Level 1 — 2 Flame Altars

The starting capacity allows you to establish a main settlement and one additional outpost.

Flame Level 2 — 4 Flame Altars

Provides two more possible base locations.

Flame Level 3 — 6 Flame Altars

Offers additional opportunities to establish crafting bases and exploration outposts.

Flame Level 4 — 8 Flame Altars

Provides more flexibility as you explore additional regions.

Flame Level 5 — 10 Flame Altars

Allows a larger network of settlements and fast-travel destinations.

Flame Level 6 — 11 Flame Altars

Unlocks an additional altar slot.

Flame Level 7 — 12 Flame Altars

Expands your available base network further.

Flame Level 8 — 13 Flame Altars

Provides another altar for exploration or construction.

Flame Level 9 — 14 Flame Altars

Supports additional bases before entering the final region.

Flame Level 10 — 15 Flame Altars

Unlocks the maximum altar capacity available before completing the final major story encounter.

Flame Level 11 — 16 Flame Altars

The final Flame Level provides the highest active altar capacity in Enshrouded 1.0.

It also unlocks the ability to push back the Shroud with Flame Altars under the default world settings.

The maximum number of active Flame Altars in Enshrouded 1.0 is 16.

Increasing your individual altar's building area doesn't increase this number.

How to Strengthen the Flame in Enshrouded

Strengthening the Flame requires specific resources and progression objectives.

The exact requirements depend on your current Flame Level.

Open the Flame Altar Menu

Approach an active Flame Altar and interact with it.

Choose Strengthen the Flame.

You'll see the requirements for the next upgrade.

Check the Required Materials

The menu displays the resources needed to complete the upgrade.

These often include:

  • Sparks.

  • Regional plants.

  • Minerals.

  • Shroud materials.

  • Crafted ingredients.

  • Boss trophies.

  • A required number of qualifying survivors.

Collect the missing items before returning.

Meet the Survivor Requirement

Later Flame upgrades require an increasing number of survivors.

In version 1.0, survivors need suitable living conditions to qualify.

Make sure they have sheltered, assigned beds and their happiness requirements are satisfied.

Craftspeople, villagers, and assistants can contribute to the required total.

Confirm the Upgrade

Once every requirement is satisfied, select the upgrade option.

Your Flame Level increases and the associated improvements become available.

You don't need to repeat this process at every altar.

The same global Flame progression applies to your available bases.

Flame Level Upgrade Requirements From Level 1 to 9

Every Flame upgrade requires Sparks and additional materials.

Several upgrades also require a boss trophy or other special item.

Version 1.0 reduced the material costs for some later upgrade levels, so older Early Access guides may show outdated quantities.

The Hydrak'Dal Head is obtained through the relevant boss encounter in Veilwater Basin's progression.

Once you've completed these upgrades, you'll be ready to work toward the two final Flame Levels.

How to Reach Flame Level 10 in Enshrouded 1.0

Flame Level 10 is a major milestone.

It unlocks the progression needed to enter Cinder's Cradle, the final region introduced in version 1.0.

It also raises your active Flame Altar limit to 15.

Flame Level 10 Requirements

Required Survivors:

16

Required Materials:

60 Spark

1 Broken Guard Of The North Crown

15 Gleam Root Dust

10 Piscine Ivory Dust

30 Drak Blood

10 Shroud Sludge

30 Daylily

You must satisfy every requirement before strengthening your Flame.

Where to Find the Broken Guard Of The North Crown

The Broken Guard Of The North Crown is obtained in Cromville, within Veilwater Basin.

Look for the castle's throne room.

The Crown is held by a statue near the throne.

Interact with it to collect the quest item.

This is a fixed quest-related discovery rather than a random chest reward.

How to Get Gleam Root Dust

Gleam Root can be found in Veilwater Basin.

It appears in suitable water environments, particularly at night.

Collect Gleam Root and process it through a powered Mill.

One Gleam Root produces one Gleam Root Dust.

How to Get Piscine Ivory Dust

Piscine Ivory Dust is created using fish-related materials.

Use Fish Teeth or Fish Bones in the Mill to produce the Dust.

Check your available fishing resources and collect the amount required for the recipe.

How to Get Drak Blood

Drak Blood is obtained from suitable Drak enemies in Veilwater Basin.

Defeat the relevant enemies and collect their materials.

How to Get Shroud Sludge

Shroud Sludge is produced through the Alchemist.

The documented recipe uses Shroud Slime, Shroud Gelatin, and Pink Mushroom Meat.

You'll need access to the appropriate crafting equipment.

How to Get Daylily

Daylily grows in Veilwater Basin.

Look for suitable plants while exploring locations such as Queen Jezmina's Camp and the surrounding region.

Once you've gathered every material and met the survivor requirement, return to your Flame Altar.

Select Strengthen the Flame and upgrade to Level 10.

You now have access to 15 Flame Altars and the Shroud protection required for the intended route into Cinder's Cradle.

How to Reach Flame Level 11 in Enshrouded 1.0

Flame Level 11 is the highest Flame Level available in version 1.0.

Unlike earlier upgrades, it requires materials associated with the concluding story.

Most importantly, you must defeat Vorgoth.

Flame Level 11 Requirements

Required Survivors:

18

Required Materials:

20 Spark

10 Celestium Bars

15 Moonstone

20 Diamond Dust

15 Ember Carapace

1 Vorgoth's Bound Essence

1 Vorgoth's Eye

These requirements are tied to Cinder's Cradle and the final boss encounter.

You cannot complete the normal final upgrade without obtaining Vorgoth's materials.

Defeat Vorgoth

Vorgoth is the final boss of the main story introduced with Enshrouded 1.0.

The encounter takes place at Mother Flame's Domicile within the Ancient Citadel.

You'll reach this area through the main story and floating-island progression in Cinder's Cradle.

The boss has two forms.

The first is Vorgoth, Champion of the Shroud.

The second is Vorgoth, the Wanderer's Vessel.

After defeating the final form, collect the rewards.

The materials needed for Flame Level 11 include Vorgoth's Eye and Vorgoth's Bound Essence.

Don't spend every Bound Essence you obtain on equipment crafting before completing the final Flame upgrade.

Reserve at least one for the Flame.

Where to Find Celestium Bars

Celestium Ore is mined in Cinder's Cradle.

Look for mineral deposits and explore locations associated with Celestium mining.

Check out some of our most popular Enshrouded services:

Process the ore in a Blast Furnace.

The documented recipe produces 20 Celestium Bars from:

20 Celestium Ore

40 Coal

This provides enough bars for the final Flame requirement.

Where to Find Moonstone

Moonstone is found in Cinder's Cradle.

You can obtain it from suitable ruins, containers, mineral deposits, and Ancient Construct-related loot.

Explore the region while completing other objectives to avoid making unnecessary trips.

You'll need 15 Moonstone.

How to Craft Diamond Dust

Diamond Dust is created through a Mill.

The recipe uses one Diamond to produce one Diamond Dust.

For Flame Level 11, you'll need 20 Diamond Dust.

That means collecting 20 Diamonds for the required crafting quantity.

Diamond can be found in appropriate areas of Cinder's Cradle, including Shroud-related locations.

Where to Find Ember Carapace

Ember Carapace is dropped by suitable enemies in Cinder's Cradle.

Flaming Scorpions are an important source.

You'll need 15 Ember Carapace.

Make sure you're prepared for their attacks, particularly when fighting in dangerous volcanic terrain.

Complete the Final Flame Upgrade

Once you have all the required materials and 18 qualifying survivors, return to an active Flame Altar.

Choose Strengthen the Flame.

Confirm the requirements and complete the upgrade.

Your Flame reaches Level 11.

This unlocks the maximum capacity of 16 Flame Altars and enables Shroud removal through Flame Altars under default settings.

What Does Flame Level 11 Unlock?

The final Flame Level provides several important benefits.

Maximum 16 Active Flame Altars

Flame Level 11 raises the altar cap from 15 to 16.

This is the highest active altar limit supported in Enshrouded 1.0.

You can use the additional slot for a permanent base, farming settlement, resource outpost, or fast-travel destination.

Shroud Removal

One of the most significant additions in version 1.0 is the ability to push back the Shroud with Flame Altars.

Under default settings, this feature unlocks at Flame Level 11.

It allows you to establish protected building areas in locations previously affected by ordinary Shroud.

However, this doesn't mean the entire world becomes permanently free of Shroud.

Certain dangerous locations and outer world boundaries remain restricted.

Increased Shroud Passage Level

Strengthening the Flame also raises your Shroud Passage Level.

This allows you to enter progressively more dangerous Shroud areas that were previously inaccessible.

Additional Character Attributes

Each Flame upgrade increases your core attributes.

At Flame Level 11, the Flame's cumulative attribute bonus reaches +10.

This benefits combat performance regardless of your chosen character build.

Longer Shroud Survival

The normal Shroud protection timer increases through Flame progression.

At Flame Level 11, the base maximum reaches 15 minutes under standard settings.

Additional world settings and temporary bonuses can affect the time available.

The Deadly Shroud still requires the appropriate Shroud Passage Level and shouldn't be treated as ordinary timed fog.

How to Get More Flame Altars Without Reaching Level 11

You don't need to complete the final story to establish several bases.

Your active altar capacity increases throughout Flame progression.

For example, Flame Level 5 already supports ten active altars.

Flame Level 9 supports 14.

Flame Level 10 allows 15.

If your current goal is establishing more fast-travel locations, check your existing Flame Level before assuming you need the final upgrade.

Check Your Active Altar Capacity

Open your world map and check the active Flame Altar count.

This tells you how many altar slots are currently available.

If you're at the limit, you must either strengthen the Flame or deactivate an existing altar.

Craft Additional Altars

Every ordinary Flame Altar requires five Stone to craft.

You don't need Shroud Cores simply to place another Level 1 altar.

Shroud Cores are used for building-area upgrades.

Choose Useful Outpost Locations

Good locations include areas near:

  • Important resource deposits.

  • Difficult quest objectives.

  • Regions that require repeated exploration.

  • Farming settlements.

  • Remote areas far from Ancient Spires.

You don't need to fill every available altar slot immediately. Keep some flexibility for newly discovered locations.

How to Upgrade Flame Altar Building Size

If your goal is creating a larger base, use Upgrade Altar instead of Strengthen the Flame.

Each altar has four possible size levels.

Flame Altar Level 1

Building Area:

40 × 40 × 40 meters

Upgrade Cost:

No additional upgrade materials.

This is the default building area after placing a new altar.

Flame Altar Level 2

Building Area:

80 × 80 × 80 meters

Required Material:

1 Shroud Core

This upgrade doubles the length of each side of the protected building cube.

It's useful for players who need more room for crafting stations, storage, and housing.

Flame Altar Level 3

Building Area:

120 × 120 × 120 meters

Required Materials:

5 Shroud Cores

Required Flame Level:

2

This provides considerably more room for large settlements and building projects.

Flame Altar Level 4

Building Area:

160 × 160 × 160 meters

Required Materials:

5 Shroud Nexus

Required Flame Level:

3

This is the maximum individual altar size in Enshrouded 1.0.

It provides a large protected area suitable for extensive building projects.

Upgrading an altar to Level 4 doesn't unlock additional altar slots. It only increases that altar's protected building area.

How to Farm Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus

Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus are the main resources required for individual altar size upgrades.

You can obtain them through crafting and certain enemy encounters.

How to Get Shroud Cores

Shroud Cores can be obtained from powerful Fell enemies.

The Fell Thunderbrute is one of the earliest reliable sources.

You can also craft Shroud Cores through the Alchemist.

The documented recipe requires:

10 Shroud Spores

10 Shroud Liquid

This produces one Shroud Core.

Shroud Spores are obtained from suitable Fell enemies.

Shroud Liquid is gathered from specific plants inside the Shroud.

How to Get Shroud Nexus

Shroud Nexus is a more advanced material.

It can be obtained from powerful enemies, including Fell Monstrosities, Fell Sicklescythes, and Fell Cyclopes.

You can also craft it through the Alchemist.

The documented recipe requires:

8 Shroud Particles

4 Shroud Adhesive

10 Mint Mushroom Meat

This produces one Shroud Nexus.

How Many Materials Do You Need for a Fully Upgraded Altar?

To upgrade one altar from Level 1 to Level 4, you need:

6 Shroud Cores in total.

5 Shroud Nexus in total.

These materials only cover the individual altar size upgrades.

They aren't the same resources needed to increase your global Flame Level.

How to Farm Sparks Efficiently

Sparks are required for every global Flame upgrade.

Across all ten upgrades from Flame Level 1 to Level 11, the documented total is 266 Sparks.

Where to Find Sparks

Sparks are obtained from Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums scattered throughout Embervale.

Flame Shrines are generally smaller outdoor locations.

Flame Sanctums are larger structures that may contain enemies or additional loot.

Interact with their Flame to collect Sparks.

Activate Ancient Spires

Ancient Spires reveal nearby locations and provide fast-travel destinations.

This makes them useful for finding Flame Shrines and reducing travel time.

Before searching randomly across a large region, unlock its Ancient Spire when possible.

Farm Higher-Level Regions

The amount of Spark obtained from a Shrine or Sanctum depends on the region.

Community-extracted game data identifies the following yields under standard settings:

Springlands: 1 Spark

Revelwood: 2 Sparks

Nomad Highlands: 3 Sparks

Kindlewastes: 4 Sparks

Albaneve Summits: 5 Sparks

Veilwater Basin: 6 Sparks

Higher-level regions can therefore offer more Sparks per Shrine.

However, traveling through dangerous terrain may take longer.

Choose locations you can reach safely and efficiently.

Can Sparks Respawn?

Yes.

Flame Shrine and Sanctum Sparks can replenish through world regeneration.

This allows you to revisit suitable locations.

The exact refresh timing can depend on world state and regeneration behavior, so don't rely on a guaranteed fixed respawn interval.

If you're collecting Sparks for the final Flame upgrades, higher-yield regions are generally more attractive than repeatedly visiting the earliest Springlands Shrines.

How to Remove or Move a Flame Altar Safely

Eventually, you may reach your maximum active altar limit.

If you want to establish a new base, you'll need to free a slot.

However, removing an altar requires caution.

Deactivate an Existing Altar

Travel to the Flame Altar you want to remove.

Open its interaction menu.

Select Deactivate Altar and confirm.

The game provides a short countdown before the altar disappears.

During this period, the deactivation can be canceled.

What Happens to Your Buildings?

Once the altar is removed, its building area loses protection.

Structures and terrain changes may remain temporarily.

However, the area will eventually reset if it isn't protected by another active altar.

This can result in the loss of buildings, decorations, storage, and other placed objects.

Never deactivate an important base without first protecting your valuable items and structures.

Can You Move a Flame Altar Directly?

You cannot simply pick up a fully upgraded altar and move it elsewhere while preserving all its upgrades.

Instead, you'll need to establish a replacement altar.

The new altar starts with its normal Level 1 building area.

You must upgrade its size separately.

If you're relocating an important base, plan the placement carefully and make sure the new protected area covers anything you want to preserve before the old protection expires.

Best Flame Altar Locations for Exploration and Building

Because the maximum number of Flame Altars is limited, positioning matters.

A useful altar should solve a practical problem.

Main Crafting Base

Choose a location with enough room for crafting survivors, storage, workshops, and construction.

This is the best candidate for a fully upgraded Level 4 building area.

Resource Farming Outpost

Place an altar near valuable materials that you frequently gather.

However, avoid covering important renewable mining deposits with the protected building zone.

Flame protection can interfere with normal world regeneration inside its boundaries.

Regional Fast-Travel Outpost

An altar in a remote region can save substantial travel time.

This is especially useful when the region contains several valuable objectives far from an Ancient Spire.

Farming and Building Settlement

You can establish a separate location dedicated to agriculture, decorative construction, or other peaceful activities.

This lets you preserve more room at your main crafting base.

Shroud Base After Flame Level 11

Once Shroud removal becomes available, you can experiment with protected construction in eligible Shroud-covered locations.

However, don't assume every Shroud area becomes safe or buildable.

Check out some of our most popular Enshrouded services:

Certain world boundaries remain restricted.

The best Flame Altar placement is one that saves travel time, protects valuable construction, or provides convenient access to useful activities.

Can You Remove the Shroud Before Flame Level 11?

Under normal world settings, Flame Level 11 is required to enable Shroud removal through Flame Altars.

However, Enshrouded 1.0 introduced customizable settings that can change this requirement.

Custom World Settings

The required Flame Level for Shroud removal can be adjusted in supported world settings.

This allows players to enable the feature earlier in customized worlds.

It is particularly useful for builders who want to experiment with locations that would otherwise be inaccessible until the endgame.

Dedicated Server Settings

Dedicated servers support the configuration setting:

flameLevelFogRemoval

Its default value is 11.

A server owner can adjust the required Flame Level according to the supported configuration options.

Does Shroud Removal Unlock the Entire World?

No.

Even with the feature enabled, certain restricted areas remain inaccessible.

The altar's protection applies to eligible areas rather than automatically removing every dangerous Shroud region from Embervale.

Flame Level 11 changes where you can build, but it doesn't eliminate every environmental restriction in the game.

Common Flame Altar Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing Flame Level with Altar Level.

Strengthening the Flame increases global progression and the altar cap. Upgrading an altar increases only that base's building area.

  • Using outdated upgrade recipes.

Version 1.0 reduced several Flame upgrade costs. Older guides may list incorrect material quantities.

  • Ignoring survivor requirements.

Later upgrades require enough qualifying survivors. Make sure they have assigned sheltered beds and appropriate living conditions.

  • Farming too few Sparks.

Sparks are required throughout Flame progression. Collect them regularly as you explore.

  • Spending rare materials before upgrading the Flame.

Some late-game resources are needed for both equipment and Flame progression. Reserve the necessary quantities first.

  • Discarding boss trophies.

Boss-related items are important for several Flame upgrades. Check their use before selling, salvaging, or storing them somewhere difficult to find.

  • Deactivating a base without protecting it.

Removing an altar can cause its structures and terrain changes to reset.

  • Placing altars directly over renewable deposits.

Protected building areas may interfere with resource regeneration.

  • Expecting new altars to inherit old building upgrades.

Each newly placed altar starts with its normal building area and must be upgraded separately.

  • Assuming Flame Level 11 removes all Shroud.

The feature pushes back eligible Shroud areas around altars. Some restricted areas remain.

  • Trying to reach Flame Level 11 before defeating Vorgoth.

The final upgrade requires materials from the concluding boss encounter.

  • Using every available altar slot too early.

Keeping an unused slot can be valuable when you discover an important new location.

Most Flame Altar problems can be avoided by checking the correct upgrade menu and planning your resources before making permanent changes.

Final Thoughts: How to Max Out Your Flame Altar in Enshrouded 1.0

Reaching Flame Level 11 is one of the most rewarding progression goals in Enshrouded 1.0.

It represents the culmination of your journey through Embervale, connecting exploration, crafting, boss encounters, resource gathering, and settlement development.

But understanding the system is just as important as completing the upgrades.

Strengthen the Flame when you want more active altars, improved Shroud protection, stronger attributes, and access to higher progression tiers.

Upgrade individual altars when you want larger building areas for castles, settlements, farms, or workshops.

As you explore, gather Sparks, rescue survivors, and collect the special materials required for each upgrade.

When you're ready for the final step, defeat Vorgoth and obtain his Bound Essence and Eye.

Once you reach Flame Level 11, you'll unlock the maximum capacity of 16 Flame Altars and gain the ability to push back eligible Shroud areas.

This opens exciting opportunities for large-scale construction and new base locations.
