Dragon City currently uses seven official rarity tiers.
From highest to lowest, they are:

Rarity gives you a useful starting point when evaluating dragons, but it should never be your only criterion.
Common dragons occupy the lowest rarity tier.
For experienced competitive players, Common dragons usually have little direct battle value compared with Heroic, Mythical, or strong VIP dragons.
That does not make them useless.
Common dragons can be valuable for:

Single-element Common dragons are especially convenient for breeding because they do not introduce as many unwanted elements into the offspring pool.
A Terra Dragon may never become the centerpiece of your endgame PvP team, but it can still remain useful long after you obtain higher-rarity dragons.
Rare dragons represent an early improvement over Common dragons.
They frequently introduce more interesting elemental combinations and can help newer players build broader coverage before stronger dragons become available.
Usually not for long-term competitive combat.
Food, Perks, and other progression resources become increasingly valuable later, so investing enormous amounts into a dragon you expect to replace soon is rarely efficient.
Use Rare dragons when they solve an immediate problem, but avoid treating rarity progression as a reason to max every dragon you obtain.
Very Rare dragons sit above Rare dragons and can remain useful during early and intermediate progression.
Their wider elemental combinations may help in Quests, collections, breeding, and restricted battles.
However, they eventually face the same limitation as Rare dragons: higher-rarity dragons generally provide better long-term battle potential.
Epic dragons are where many players begin obtaining more interesting fighters.
They can offer useful combinations of elements while remaining easier to acquire or Empower than some top-end dragons.
Epic dragons can therefore have surprisingly good practical value.
A theoretical top-tier dragon that you cannot Empower may provide less immediate value than a good Epic or Legendary dragon you can develop much further.
This principle becomes increasingly important in Dragon City.
The best dragon on paper is not always the best dragon for your account.
Legendary dragons form one of Dragon City's largest and most varied rarity groups.
This makes the word Legendary somewhat misleading when judging battle strength.
Two Legendary dragons can perform very differently.
One may be an older standard dragon with ordinary attacks, while another belongs to a powerful VIP family and carries specialized Skills.
This is one of the most important lessons for returning Dragon City players.
A standard Legendary dragon should not automatically receive Food, Joker Orbs, or Perks simply because its rarity icon looks impressive.
Many skilled VIP Legendary dragons can be substantially more useful than ordinary dragons of the same rarity.
Judge the individual dragon.
Mythical is Dragon City's second-highest official rarity.
Socialpoint explains that Mythical dragons are rarer and more powerful than Legendary dragons but below Heroic dragons in the official rarity hierarchy. Mythical also has its own Orbs, Joker Orbs, and Trade Essences.
This rarity includes some extremely powerful competitive dragons.
Raw rarity is not everything.
A strong Mythical with:
Useful Skills
Good elements
High Empowerment
Strong Perks
Good team synergy
can outperform an ordinary Heroic with no special battle utility.
Community competitive rankings currently place several skilled Mythicals very highly, including dragons from families such as Strategist, Silencer, Doom, Vampire, Karma, Armored, and other VIP lines.
This is why experienced players often evaluate VIP status and Skills alongside rarity.
Heroic remains the highest official rarity in Dragon City.
Heroics generally have excellent battle statistics, making them natural candidates for competitive teams.
But even within Heroic rarity, there is a major difference between an ordinary Heroic and a highly specialized VIP Heroic.
Ordinary Heroics can provide strong base stats and useful elements.
VIP Heroics often add powerful Skills or family mechanics that completely change how they behave in combat.
These may include effects involving:
Damage reflection
Shields or Armor
Healing
Life stealing
Reviving
Team support
Silence
Dodge-style mechanics
Death effects
Multi-target attacks
Increasing damage under certain conditions

That difference is why an ordinary Heroic is not automatically superior to every Mythical or VIP Legendary.

However, there is one particularly important distinction:
The first element is the dragon's primary defensive element.
That primary element determines the dragon's normal elemental weaknesses and resistances in battle.
The first element shown for the dragon is its defensive typing.
When an opponent attacks, the effectiveness of that attack is calculated against this primary element.
This means primary typing deserves serious attention when comparing two otherwise similar dragons.
Additional elements expand the attacks available to a dragon.
They allow the dragon to potentially hit more enemy primary elements effectively.
A dragon with several well-chosen elements can therefore provide excellent offensive coverage.
But those secondary elements do not simply give the dragon every defensive weakness associated with them. The primary element remains the critical defensive type.
Elemental attacks can currently produce four general effectiveness results:
Critical: approximately 2x damage
Normal: normal damage
Weak: approximately 0.5x damage
No Damage: 0 damage
The attacking element is compared with the defender's primary element to determine the result.
Suppose Dragon A has four attack elements capable of hitting many common defensive elements critically.
Dragon B has equally impressive raw stats but poor elemental coverage.
Dragon A may be much easier to use because it has more favorable matchups.
This is why competitive dragon rankings frequently consider coverage, not just HP and attack values.
Imagine two dragons with identical rarity, Skills, and stats.
One has a primary element frequently targeted by popular meta attackers.
The other has a defensive primary element that is difficult for common opponents to exploit.
The second dragon may perform much better even if their raw numbers are identical.
This is particularly important in Arena environments, where the dragons you encounter and the elements receiving bonuses can change which defensive typing is most valuable.
The practical lesson is simple:
Always examine the first element before investing heavily in a dragon.
There is no single stat called “best dragon.”
Strong dragons combine multiple advantages.
Rarity matters because higher-rarity dragons generally have better battle potential.
Competitive reference data currently places Heroic dragons in the highest statistical category and Mythicals immediately below them.
However, raw stats become only one part of the equation once Skills enter the picture.
Skills can completely alter a dragon's usefulness.
A dragon may be valuable because it can:
Survive attacks that would defeat another dragon
Recover health

Can I realistically Empower this dragon?
A dragon whose Orbs you can obtain consistently may be a better long-term investment than a prestigious dragon that remains stuck at low Empowerment.
Perks provide another layer of customization.
Dragon City currently separates them into Basic, Advanced, and Pro rarities, with different attachment limits.
The correct Perks depend heavily on the dragon.
A tanky support dragon may benefit from a different setup than an aggressive damage dealer.
Avoid copying a universal Perk setup without understanding what that dragon is supposed to do.

The strongest dragon for your account may therefore be one that fills a missing role.

Skins, Empowerment, Perks, Arena modifiers, and team composition can change their relative strength.
Apex of Dawn is one of the most important recent additions to Dragon City's top-end competitive discussion.
It is officially a Heroic dragon, despite “Apex” functioning as part of its identity rather than a separate rarity above Heroic. Current competitive stat references list it as Category 11 alongside Heroics.
Recent high-level community discussions frequently place Apex of Dawn among the strongest overall dragons, with some players ranking it at or near number one.
Its appeal comes from much more than raw rarity.
It has been designed around several high-impact Skill interactions, giving it enormous potential in properly constructed teams.
It should still not be treated as literally unbeatable. Counterplay, elemental matchups, Silence-type effects, Skill interactions, and team composition remain important.
For players who actually own and can develop it, however, Apex of Dawn belongs in the conversation for the current top tier.
High Purus the Strategist remains one of the most frequently cited premium Heroic attackers.
Recent community rankings continue to place it close to the top, particularly when evaluating offensive potential.
Its combination of Heroic-level stats, useful Skills, and offensive pressure makes it valuable when you want a dragon capable of actively deciding battles rather than simply absorbing damage.
High Purus is a good example of why modern Dragon City players distinguish VIP Heroics from ordinary Heroics.
High Anarchaos Evader is another current high-tier Heroic frequently mentioned alongside Purus.
Competitive and community references continue to place it among the strongest Heroic options.
Survivability mechanics can be extraordinarily powerful in Dragon City.
Avoiding or disrupting incoming damage can create additional turns, preserve Perks, and stop opponents from executing predictable combinations.
That makes Evader-style dragons particularly dangerous when properly Empowered.
High Spiked Rhinodillo remains a major Heroic threat.

A dragon that forces your opponent to think twice before using a powerful Skill can change the flow of the entire battle.
Rhinodillo is therefore a strong example of utility beating simple stats.
High Void Aether Stone is commonly praised for durability and reliability.
Recent community discussion highlights it as an effective tank with defensive utility, Armor, revival-related value, and strong consistency compared with more RNG-dependent choices.
Think of Aether Stone less as a pure damage race dragon and more as a unit designed to stay useful for a long time.
That durability can provide enormous value when paired with aggressive teammates.
If your roster already has enough damage, adding a high-end tank can improve your team more than adding another attacker.
High Cloaked Critical is highly regarded as a support-oriented Heroic.
Current competitive rankings place it among high-value Heroic options, while community discussions frequently point to its ability to improve the performance of teammates.
Players often chase the dragon that produces the largest individual damage number.
That overlooks an important reality:
A strong support dragon can make two other dragons better.
When team-based effects are involved, the value of one Skill can effectively multiply across your lineup.
High Doom Baron remains another notable Heroic choice in the current meta.
It appears repeatedly in high-end rankings and community recommendations, particularly for teams that can take advantage of its death-related and Doom-oriented mechanics.
It is particularly valuable when your strategy can turn even its defeat into additional pressure on the enemy team.
High Astro Supernova remains a strong offensive Heroic option.
Current competitive lists continue to place it among high-value Heroics, while community discussions highlight its ability to pressure a wide variety of opponents.
It may not always be ranked above every premium Heroic, but its offensive utility keeps it relevant.
High Astro Black Hole is another strong Astro-family Heroic appearing regularly in modern competitive discussions.
It is especially worth considering when its Skill package and elemental coverage fit your roster better than another top attacker.
As with many premium dragons, team role matters more than simply comparing two names on a tier list.
Several additional Heroic dragons continue to appear in strong competitive placements, including:

Some of these become dramatically stronger with specific skins, so verify whether the ranking you are reading assumes those bonuses.
Heroics are not the only dragons worth building.
Several Mythicals remain extremely competitive.
Gale the Strategist is frequently cited as one of the best current Mythical VIP options.
Recent community discussions continue to include Gale among the most valuable Mythicals.
For players unable to build a full premium Heroic lineup, a heavily developed Mythical such as Gale can be an excellent investment.
Axed Silencer is another high-value Mythical that appears repeatedly in current competitive recommendations.
Silencer mechanics are particularly useful because disabling or restricting enemy Skills can neutralize dragons whose entire power budget revolves around those abilities.
Current competitive family rankings list Axed Silencer among top Mythical options.
Doom Stitcher is another Mythical currently mentioned among strong high-end choices.
Its usefulness depends on how well its Skill set fits your other dragons, but community recommendations in 2026 continue to place it among the Mythicals worth serious investment.
Doom Dancer also remains relevant in current Mythical discussions.

Depending on skins, Arena rules, and team requirements, other strong Mythical candidates can include dragons such as:

Vampire dragons were once among the most obvious answers to “What are the best dragons in Dragon City?”

In many cases, the skilled Mythical can be the stronger practical choice.
Heroic provides better rarity-level potential, but Skills and Empowerment can outweigh that difference.
A five-star developed Mythical VIP can easily be more valuable to your account than an unempowered ordinary Heroic.
Instead of asking only “What is the strongest dragon in Dragon City?”, use a more useful checklist.
Skills increasingly define the top-end meta.
A dragon with ordinary attacks needs exceptional stats or accessibility to compete with modern Skill-focused VIPs.
Check which elements can critically hit it.
A poor defensive element can cause a seemingly powerful dragon to disappear quickly against common opponents.
A dragon that duplicates everything your existing attacker already does may not improve your team much.
Look for complementary attack coverage.
A dragon you can realistically push toward E3, E4, or E5 has enormous long-term potential.
Do not underestimate Orb accessibility.
If a tier list specifies with skin, confirm you actually have that skin.
Do not invest based on bonuses your version of the dragon does not receive.
A dragon becomes much more valuable when your available Perks complement its intended role.
Think about the three-dragon lineup, not one individual unit.
