What Is Altar of Fangs?

Altar of Fangs is a new five-player dungeon added with The Curse of Ula’tek.

Thousands of years ago, the ancient Amani used the altar to seal the Vaults of Atal’Utek.

The seal could only be broken from outside by an Amani wielding the Fang of Ula’tek.

Zul’jan has brought that dagger back to the altar because he believes Ula’tek’s power can restore Amani greatness.

The problem is that the altar is no longer simply an abandoned Amani ruin.

It has become a nest for the Children of Ula’tek, creatures that sacrifice, consume, and fight one another in a violent struggle for evolution. yers enter alongside characters including Lady Liadrin and Orweyna, eventually climbing toward Zul’jan and the Fang itself.

Where Is Altar of Fangs?

Altar of Fangs is located inside the Vaults of Atal’Utek, connected to the Coiled Isle content introduced in Patch 12.1.

The dungeon is also part of the Patch 12.1 campaign.

One campaign objective specifically sends players into Altar of Fangs to:

  • Meet Lady Liadrin

  • Clear the dungeon

  • Confront Zul’jan

  • Recover control of the situation surrounding the Fang of Ula’tek

The quest can also direct players toward the Follower Dungeon version for story progression.

Altar of Fangs Bosses

Altar of Fangs contains three bosses:

  1. Rav’i

  2. The Writhing Coil

  3. Zul’jan

Each encounter emphasizes a different skill.

Rav’i revolves around controlling the boss’s feeding phases and managing carrion mechanics.

The Writhing Coil introduces a coordinated movement mechanic where the entire group must physically pull the boss apart.

Zul’jan combines beam interception, venom management, axes, positioning, and heavy tank damage.

This makes Altar of Fangs unusually varied for a three-boss dungeon.

Rav’i Boss Guide

Rav’i is the first boss of Altar of Fangs.

This ravenous hydra has survived inside the altar by scavenging the creatures sacrificed into its domain.

The arena is filled with Carrion Piles, and the encounter revolves heavily around controlling how Rav’i interacts with them.

Rav’i – Main Mechanics

The most important mechanics include:

  • Ssscavenging

  • Carrion Piles

  • Fresh Meat

  • Scent of Blood

  • Feeding shield

  • Fetid Roar

  • Regurgitate

  • Triple Shot

Blizzard substantially updated Rav’i during PTR testing because the original encounter was considered too passive.

The latest version places more emphasis on correctly responding to the feeding mechanic and environmental hazards.

Ssscavenging

When Rav’i runs out of energy, the boss moves toward a Carrion Pile and begins Ssscavenging.

During the feeding phase, Rav’i gains an absorb shield.

The group should break this shield quickly.

The longer Rav’i is allowed to continue feeding, the more dangerous the following damage becomes.

This creates a simple priority:

When Rav’i begins feeding, switch immediately and destroy the absorb shield.

Do not continue padding damage into unrelated targets or mechanics.

Breaking the shield ends the feeding phase faster.

Fresh Meat and Scent of Blood

The encounter also uses Fresh Meat to influence Rav’i’s behavior around Carrion Piles.

Blizzard improved the visual clarity of Fresh Meat during PTR testing.

Rav’i can gain Scent of Blood when closest to a pile containing Fresh Meat, increasing the boss’s attack speed. s means tanks need to pay attention to which Carrion Piles are relevant instead of treating every part of the arena equally.

Positioning matters.

A poorly positioned Rav’i can become significantly more dangerous.

Fetid Roar

After Rav’i’s feeding is interrupted, the boss uses Fetid Roar.

Its damage is connected to how much Rav’i managed to eat.

The longer your group takes to remove the feeding shield, the more dangerous this ability becomes. Healer Tip

Prepare group healing immediately after the feeding phase.

The cleaner your group handles the shield, the easier Fetid Roar becomes.

DPS Tip

This is why breaking the feeding shield is not optional.

Fast shield damage directly reduces pressure on your healer.

Regurgitate

Rav’i fires waves of acid toward a player.

Blizzard reduced Regurgitate’s damage during testing but increased the size of its waves, making the mechanic more about movement and positioning than simply surviving the hit. ch where Rav’i is facing and move through safe gaps instead of trying to absorb unnecessary damage.

Triple Shot

Triple Shot targets several players with venom.

The ability deals initial damage and can continue applying pressure afterward.

Blizzard increased Triple Shot’s damage during PTR testing, making it one of the more important healer mechanics in the encounter. yers should avoid unnecessary stacking when the mechanic is active.

How to Beat Rav’i

The encounter can be simplified into five rules:

  1. Position Rav’i carefully around the Carrion Piles.

  2. Watch Fresh Meat and Scent of Blood.

  3. Immediately destroy the feeding shield during Ssscavenging.

  4. Move correctly through Regurgitate.

  5. Prepare healing for Fetid Roar and Triple Shot.

The encounter becomes substantially harder if Rav’i is allowed to feed for too long.

Rav’i Tank Tips

Tanks should focus on:

  • Boss positioning

  • Fresh Meat locations

  • Scent of Blood

  • Hydrastrike-style tank pressure

  • Keeping the arena predictable

Do not constantly reposition Rav’i without a reason.

Stable boss positioning makes Regurgitate and other mechanics easier for the group to read.

Rav’i Healer Tips

Prepare for:

  • Fetid Roar

  • Triple Shot

  • Failed feeding phases

  • Players hit by Regurgitate

The difference between a clean and messy feeding phase can dramatically change your required healing.

Save stronger cooldowns for poorly controlled feeding cycles or dangerous Mythic+ overlaps.

Rav’i DPS Tips

Your biggest responsibility is simple:

Break the feeding shield quickly.

Do not hold all offensive cooldowns if using them prevents Rav’i from gaining additional power during Ssscavenging.

High-priority damage matters more than impressive overall numbers.

The Writhing Coil Boss Guide

The second encounter is The Writhing Coil.

This creature is one of the Children of Ula’tek that survived repeated battles against its own brood and became increasingly powerful by defeating and consuming its rivals.

The encounter is built around a unique mechanic where the party must help physically uncoil the boss.

The Writhing Coil – Main Mechanics

Important abilities include:

  • Death Rattle

  • Vine Grip

  • Uncoil

  • Toxic Atrophy

  • Tail Scythe

  • Vindictive Onslaught

  • Burrowing Charge

  • Venom Jet

  • Assimilation

This is one of the most coordination-heavy bosses in Altar of Fangs.

Death Rattle

The Writhing Coil begins using Death Rattle, dealing increasing group damage.

The damage becomes more dangerous the longer the cast continues.

The group cannot handle this like a normal interrupt.

Instead, Orweyna provides the party with Vine Grip.

Vine Grip – The Most Important Mechanic

Vine Grip automatically attaches players to The Writhing Coil.

The group must move away from the boss, pulling against the vines to force the creature to Uncoil.

During the July PTR redesign, Blizzard changed this mechanic so all living players participate rather than relying on an extra-action button. latest test also reduced the strength of the pull from Vine Grip by 50%, making coordinated movement easier to execute. How to Handle Vine Grip

When Vine Grip appears:

  • Stop unnecessary casting

  • Identify a clear direction

  • Move away from the boss

  • Keep moving until the Uncoil condition is completed

  • Do not stand still expecting another player to solve it

The group needs to respond together.

One player ignoring the mechanic can make the entire movement check slower or more dangerous.

Uncoiled Phase

Successfully completing Vine Grip causes The Writhing Coil to Uncoil.

This separates the creature into multiple parts.

Damage dealt during the Uncoiled phase remains relevant after the creature later reforms through Assimilation. this phase aggressively.

It is an excellent time for:

  • AoE cooldowns

  • Priority damage

  • Crowd control

  • Efficient target swapping

Avoid spreading damage inefficiently if one part needs to die quickly.

Toxic Atrophy

The Writhing Coil casts Toxic Atrophy, an interruptible toxin that reduces player damage and movement speed.

This is a very high-priority interrupt. owing repeated casts through can create a severe problem:

Lower damage means dangerous enemies live longer.

Lower movement speed makes Vine Grip and other movement mechanics harder.

Interrupt Priority

Treat Toxic Atrophy as one of the most important kicks in the encounter.

Assign an interrupt rotation instead of hoping someone notices it.

Tail Scythe

Tail Scythe deals heavy Physical damage to the tank.

Tanks should have active mitigation prepared and avoid exposing the group unnecessarily.

This is primarily a tank check rather than a mechanic everyone should absorb.

Burrowing Charge

The boss burrows through the ground and charges across the arena.

Players standing in its path take heavy damage.

Watch the direction and move before the boss reaches you.

Venom Jet

Venom Jet is a frontal cone.

Do not stand in front of The Writhing Coil unless you need to.

Tanks should position the boss predictably so melee players understand where the frontal danger zone will appear.

How to Beat The Writhing Coil

The core strategy is:

  1. Interrupt Toxic Atrophy.

  2. Avoid Burrowing Charge and Venom Jet.

  3. Prepare for Death Rattle.

  4. When Vine Grip appears, every player moves away.

  5. Force the boss to Uncoil.

  6. Use strong damage during the Uncoiled phase.

  7. Repeat until the boss dies.

The encounter is much easier when everyone understands Vine Grip before the pull begins.

Writhing Coil Tank Tips

Tanks should:

  • Keep the boss facing away from the group

  • Prepare for Tail Scythe

  • Avoid moving unnecessarily

  • Participate correctly in Vine Grip

  • Help establish a predictable direction for group movement

Writhing Coil Healer Tips

The biggest healing pressure comes from:

  • Death Rattle

  • Failed or slow Vine Grip movement

  • Toxic Atrophy casts

  • Players hit by Charges or frontals

Do not waste major cooldowns before Death Rattle if you know a difficult pull phase is approaching.

Writhing Coil DPS Tips

The biggest DPS priorities are:

  • Interrupt Toxic Atrophy

  • Execute Vine Grip correctly

  • Maximize the Uncoiled damage window

  • Avoid losing uptime by standing in avoidable mechanics

This encounter rewards players who can switch quickly between damage and mechanics.

Zul’jan Boss Guide

Zul’jan is the final boss of Altar of Fangs.

At the top of the altar, Zul’jan performs an ancient ritual using the Fang of Ula’tek.

He believes the dagger can restore Amani power, but his actions also threaten to release the ancient weapon his people sealed away. ’jan fights with an Amani axe in each hand and combines:

  • Ritual beams

  • Venom

  • Bleeding

  • Spinning axes

  • Thrown weapons

  • Heavy tank strikes

This is the most mechanically complex fight in the dungeon.

Zul’jan – Main Mechanics

The important mechanics are:

  • Ritual of the Fang

  • Fang Empowered

  • Ritual Venom

  • Bloodletting

  • Axegrinder

  • Boneslicer

  • Chop Down

Understanding how Ritual of the Fang, Ritual Venom, and Bloodletting interact is the key to defeating the encounter.

Ritual of the Fang

Zul’jan channels power from ancient snake heads into the Fang of Ula’tek.

If players allow the beams to reach Zul’jan freely, the boss becomes Fang Empowered, causing increasingly dangerous group damage. yers must intercept those beams.

This prevents Zul’jan from receiving the full empowerment.

However, intercepting the beams gives players Ritual Venom.

So the encounter is not simply:

“Stand in the beam.”

It is:

Intercept the beam, then correctly remove the venom afterward.

Ritual Venom

Players who intercept Ritual of the Fang gain Ritual Venom.

On Mythic difficulty, the effect can stack.

If Ritual Venom expires naturally, it deals heavy Nature damage. t means players should not intercept beams without understanding how they will clear the debuff.

Bloodletting

Bloodletting is the mechanic that removes Ritual Venom.

Zul’jan’s Physical attacks can cause affected players to bleed, removing applications of Ritual Venom while creating dangerous blood pools on the floor. s creates the central rhythm of the fight:

Intercept Ritual of the Fang → gain Ritual Venom → use Bloodletting interactions to clear the venom.

Managing this correctly becomes increasingly important in Mythic+.

Axegrinder

Zul’jan launches spinning axes through the arena.

Blizzard substantially improved the visual clarity of Axegrinder during PTR testing.

The ability now displays directional arrows before axes are thrown, giving players clearer information about where the danger will travel. initial throw is particularly dangerous.

How to Handle Axegrinder

  • Watch the red direction indicators

  • Move before the axes launch

  • Do not run blindly through their travel path

  • Keep the arena organized

The mechanic becomes much harder when players scatter in random directions.

Boneslicer

Zul’jan throws an axe through players.

Anyone in the path takes Physical damage and receives additional damage over time.

PTR testing shortened the DoT duration but increased its damage, making the mechanic more concentrated. not stack unnecessarily in the line of the throw.

Healers should prepare for the affected player immediately.

Chop Down

Chop Down is Zul’jan’s primary heavy tank attack.

The boss strikes his current target twice for significant Physical damage. ks should have mitigation available before the cast rather than reacting after both hits connect.

How to Beat Zul’jan

The encounter is easiest when the group follows this sequence:

  1. Position the boss cleanly.

  2. Watch Ritual of the Fang.

  3. Intercept the required beams.

  4. Track your Ritual Venom.

  5. Remove Ritual Venom correctly through Bloodletting mechanics.

  6. Avoid Axegrinder.

  7. Avoid standing in Boneslicer paths.

  8. Tanks prepare mitigation for Chop Down.

  9. Keep blood pools away from important movement areas.

The biggest mistake is treating each mechanic independently.

Ritual of the Fang, Ritual Venom, and Bloodletting are one connected system.

Zul’jan Tank Tips

Tanks should focus on:

  • Chop Down mitigation

  • Stable boss positioning

  • Ritual mechanics

  • Managing Bloodletting safely

  • Keeping dangerous floor effects away from the center

Plan defensives before Chop Down rather than waiting until your health is already low.

Zul’jan Healer Tips

Healers should watch:

  • Ritual Venom

  • Bloodletting

  • Boneslicer

  • Failed Ritual interceptions

  • Players hit by Axegrinder

  • Heavy tank damage during Chop Down

A player carrying Ritual Venom who fails the mechanic can create a sudden health spike.

Track the debuff clearly on your party frames.

Zul’jan DPS Tips

DPS players must:

  • Intercept Ritual beams correctly

  • Track Ritual Venom

  • Clear the debuff properly

  • Avoid Axegrinder

  • Avoid Boneslicer paths

  • Maintain damage while repositioning

This fight rewards mechanical consistency more than stationary damage.

Important Altar of Fangs Trash Mobs

Bosses are only part of Mythic+.

Several Altar of Fangs trash enemies have already required PTR tuning because they were significantly more dangerous than intended.

Important enemies include:

  • Ascendant Serpent

  • High Evolutionist

  • Ravenous Descendant

  • Ritual Chieftain

  • Venom Leech

  • Blade of the Altar

  • Primal Serpent

  • Hatchlings

  • Rattling Writhe

Blizzard specifically highlighted Ascendant Serpent, Ritual Chieftain, and Venom Leech as enemies that were initially too difficult or chaotic.

Ascendant Serpent

Ascendant Serpents deserve immediate attention.

One important ability is Infest, which creates Hatchlings.

Blizzard reduced:

  • Infest damage

  • Number of Hatchlings

  • Hatchling critical strikes

Later tuning also reduced Ascendant Serpent health, increased ability cooldowns, and made Infusion Totems easier to identify. Priority

Ascendant Serpents should generally be treated as dangerous priority enemies.

Kill them quickly and watch their spawned mechanics.

High Evolutionist

High Evolutionists can apply dangerous venom-related pressure.

Their Envenom damage was reduced substantially during PTR tuning after proving stronger than intended. ommunity testing guide also highlighted Evolve as one of the trash mechanics groups should understand before pushing the dungeon. not allow important casts from these enemies to go unnoticed.

Ravenous Descendant

Ravenous Descendants were also dangerous enough that Blizzard reduced their base attack speed by 33%. se enemies can place significant pressure on tanks.

Avoid combining too many dangerous melee enemies until your tank understands how the pull scales.

Ritual Chieftain

Ritual Chieftains use abilities including Blood Sacrifice, which created high tank and healing pressure during early testing.

Blizzard changed Blood Sacrifice so it no longer ignores armor and reduced its healing absorb. pite the nerf, Ritual Chieftains remain enemies worth respecting.

Venom Leech

Venom Leeches create environmental pressure through Septic Spatter.

Blizzard reduced both the number and duration of the resulting pools. id dragging large pulls through poorly placed pools.

Space becomes increasingly valuable when other mechanics overlap.

Caustic Mist Totems

Players encounter Caustic Mist Totems that can be destroyed.

Blizzard increased their interaction range and changed the destroy interaction so taking damage no longer interrupts it. a mechanic can be removed safely, deal with it instead of allowing unnecessary environmental pressure to remain active.

Altar of Fangs Mythic+ Strategy

Altar of Fangs is likely to reward groups that value control over reckless pulling.

The dungeon combines:

  • Dangerous priority mobs

  • Poison effects

  • Strong melee enemies

  • Interruptible casts

  • Environmental hazards

  • Coordinated boss mechanics

That means oversized pulls can quickly become difficult to control.

Before combining packs, ask whether your group has enough:

  • Interrupts

  • Stops

  • Defensive cooldowns

  • Dispel coverage

  • Priority-target damage

A technically larger pull is not faster if it causes a wipe.

Best Interrupt Priorities

The exact live priority list may change with final tuning, but several abilities already stand out.

Watch particularly for:

  • Toxic Atrophy during The Writhing Coil

  • Dangerous High Evolutionist casts

  • Ascendant Serpent abilities

  • Ritualist casts

  • Other venom-based enemy abilities

Use an interrupt rotation instead of everyone kicking the first available cast.

Poison Dispels Can Be Valuable

Altar of Fangs is heavily themed around venom and poison.

Classes capable of removing Poison effects may provide extra value depending on the final Mythic+ tuning and affix combination.

Useful utility can come from classes such as:

  • Paladin

  • Druid

  • Monk

  • Evoker

  • Shaman through appropriate tools

Do not build an entire party around one mechanic, but poison removal can make certain situations easier.

Use Defensives Proactively

Several Altar of Fangs mechanics deal predictable damage.

Use personal defensives before:

  • Major Fetid Roar cycles

  • Dangerous Writhing Coil phases

  • Zul’jan Ritual mistakes

  • High trash damage

  • Difficult Mythic+ overlaps

A defensive used before damage is much more valuable than one pressed at 5% health.

Altar of Fangs Rewards

Altar of Fangs offers a full dungeon loot table containing:

  • Armor

  • Weapons

  • Rings

  • Other equipment

  • Housing decor

Zul’jan’s current loot pool includes items such as:

  • Handwraps of Blasphemous Rites

  • Ancient General’s Obsidian Pillars

  • Polished Lightwood Channeler

  • Ancestral Amani Recurve

  • Chestguard of Corroded Scales

  • Band of the Amani Warlord

  • Tattered Amani War Banner

  • Sharpened Lightwood Slasher

  • The Writhing Brood

  • Pillar of the Fanged Altar

The exact item level of Mythic+ rewards scales with keystone difficulty rather than being fixed to the dungeon itself.

Altar of Fangs Housing Reward

Collectors also have a reason to run the dungeon.

Pillar of the Fanged Altar is a Housing decoration associated with Zul’jan and Altar of Fangs. t gives the dungeon relevance beyond pure gearing.

Why You Should Learn Altar of Fangs Early

Altar of Fangs is the only completely new dungeon in the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ rotation.

Returning dungeons such as Ruby Life Pools, Kings’ Rest, and Temple of Sethraliss may have substantial changes, but veteran players at least recognize their layouts.

Altar of Fangs has no established live-season Mythic+ history.

That means early Season 2 players will still be discovering:

  • Optimal routes

  • Enemy Forces strategies

  • Best pull combinations

  • Bloodlust locations

  • Skip opportunities

  • Cooldown plans

  • Boss positioning

Learning the fundamental mechanics before worrying about optimized routes gives you a major advantage.

Common Altar of Fangs Mistakes

Avoid these errors:

  • Letting Rav’i feed for too long

  • Ignoring Fresh Meat positioning

  • Failing to break Rav’i’s shield

  • Standing in Regurgitate

  • Missing Toxic Atrophy interrupts

  • Failing to move during Vine Grip

  • Wasting the Uncoiled damage window

  • Standing in Writhing Coil frontals

  • Failing to intercept Ritual of the Fang

  • Letting Ritual Venom expire incorrectly

  • Standing in Axegrinder paths

  • Ignoring dangerous Ascendant Serpents

  • Pulling too many strong melee enemies together

  • Treating overall DPS as more important than priority damage

Most Altar of Fangs failures are likely to come from mechanics rather than raw item level.

Final Thoughts

Altar of Fangs is one of the most important dungeons to learn for WoW Midnight Season 2 because it is completely new to Mythic+.

Rav’i tests how quickly your group responds to feeding phases and environmental mechanics.

The Writhing Coil requires genuine five-player coordination through Vine Grip, while also punishing missed Toxic Atrophy interrupts.

Zul’jan brings everything together with heavy tank damage, moving axes, Ritual of the Fang, Ritual Venom, and Bloodletting management.

The trash is equally important.

Ascendant Serpents, High Evolutionists, Ravenous Descendants, Ritual Chieftains, and Venom Leeches have all received attention during PTR testing because of their potential impact on Mythic+ pulls.

Start by learning those mechanics.

Do not worry about copying the perfect high-key route immediately.

Once you understand which enemies are dangerous, where your group needs interrupts, and how the three boss encounters actually work, optimizing Altar of Fangs becomes much easier.

Season 2 routes will evolve.

The mechanics will remain the foundation.
